Another object ol.E the invention is to pro vide in a portable washing apparatus having a vertically movable piston in a cylinder and operated by power, means for varying the operative position ol' the piston within the cylinder whereby the movement of water during the washing process is varied and varying results obtained.
. Further objects of the invention not hereinahove mentioned will be brought out fully in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete apparatus.

As shown in Fig. 5, one form 01: roughening consists in making a plurality of radial grooves 27 in the lower face of the disk, thus producing channels for the passage oi" water between raised triangular portions 28 that bear upon and press against the clothes being washed.
A piston rod 29 extends from the piston 2d through the cover 11 in an upward direction parallel to the bar 18 for a Suitable distance where it is pivoted to a guiding head 30 comprising a pair of plates 3l between which the end of the piston rod eX- tends and through which the pivot pin 32 passes. rl`he head 30 is arranged to slide 'freely on a vertical guide plate 33 mounted on the outer ends or spacing blocks 34- projcctingfrom the bar 18 and bolted thereto as shown. Above the spacing blocks 34C and projecting in the opposite direction is another spacing block 35 bolted to the bar 18 and depending from said block is a bearing bracket 86 to which is pivoted a substantially horizontal lever 37 formed as here shown of two bars 88 that pass on opposite sides ofthe bar 18 for a distance greater than the diameter of the cylinder 10 Aand have bolted to their outer ends a handle 3S) by means of Which the lever 37 isv vibrated ,in a vertical direction.
Securely fastened on the handle 37 and extending below the same is an electric niotor 40 of any approved type on the shaft 41 of which is keyed a disk 42 from one side of which projects a crank pin 43 that is journaled on one end of a connecting rod 44. The opposite end of said rod passes between the plates 31 of the pitma-n head 30 and is pi'voted thereto.
Current from any source of power is conducted by wires 45, 46 to the motor which being driven by said current causes a rapid rotation of the crank disk 42 and through the connection of rod 44 with the head 30, and piston rod 29, the piston is Given a very rapid reciprocation in the cylinder l0. The stroke of the piston 24 may be varied by inserting the crank pin 43 in one or the other of the holes 47 in the crank disk 42, thereby changing the length of crank movement and consequently the movement of the piston.
A In Fig. 7 is illustrated a modified form of invention that enables the apparatus to be used where it is impossible to obtain electric power. In this case, a link 48 connects the handle 37 directly to the head 30 so that rapid oscillation 0f the handle 37 reciprocates the piston 24 in the cylinder l0. By raising or lowering the handle the position of the piston within the cylinder is changed as is evident.
lVhile l have shown the best form of the device known to me at the present time, it is to be understood that various changes and modications in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and that all such changes as come within the scope of the claims are to be Considered as covered thereby.
Vilhat I claim as new is l. In a portable clothes washing apparatus, the combination of a cylinder' adapted to be placed within the Wash tub, a piston reciprocable within said cylinder, a hand bar extending upwardly from the cylinder, means for reciprocalinen said piston, and a support for said reciprocating; means movable with .said means in the axial line of the cylinder for chai-rigidethe stroke position of 'the piston within the cylinder during the reciprocation thezeo7 without varying the length oi the piston stroke or stopping the operation of the apparatus.
2. In a portable clothes washing' apparatus, the combination with a` cylinder adapted to be placed within a wash tube, a piston within said cylinder, a hand bar extending' upwardly troni said cylinder tor manually supporting the saine in the tub, means niovably mounted on said bar' for imparting short reeiprocai'ions to said piston, and a hinged support carrying` said reciprocating means for varying the position or the piston within the cylinder during its reciprocation.

4. ln a portable clothes washing apparatus, a cylinder adapted to be placed within the wash tub and movable freely therein, a piston reciprocable within the cylinder, power means for imparting strokes oi predetermined lengrh to said piston, and inanually operable means supporting .said power incans and movable to and ifi-oni the cylinder for changing the stroke 'position et the piston within the cylinder coincidentally and independently of reciprocations and without interruptiinq` the continuity oit-the reciprocations.
