Description

Sept. 9, 1930. w. RATH WASHING MACHINE Filed May '7. 1929 V gwue/wbo'z Wilhelm Hal/z 351 his bltomw @AV Patented Sept. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES WILHELMRATH, or new YORK,; Nv-Y. A
WASHING MAcHInE Application filed May 7,
V This invention relates to improvements in washing machines particularly to a hand operated washing machine and apparatus for small articles, such'as handkerchiefs etc.
It is the principal Object of my invention to provide a machine of simple and'comparal tively inexpensive construction, yet durable and efiicient in operation. 7
Another object of my invention is the pro- 10 vision of a Washing machine of this character equipped with a plate valve 1 for allowing the escape of the air, yet preventing water from entering the operating chamber. A further object of my invention is the provision of a machine of the above described type finding a firm support in a wash-tub or the like receptacle.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims. 1
Inthe accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a wash ing machine constructed according to my invention. I
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof in section the rubber mounted pads 11 which are held between the arms of the brackets 13 and are secured thereto by means of rivets 14 or the like.
Thebrackets 13 are formed with or integrallymade with a housing 15 closed on top by means of the foot 16 of a cylindrlcal casing 17 having an elongated opening 18 in its wall, and closed ontop by means of a cover 19.
A plunger or piston rod 20 within cylinder 17 and extending with its lower end into casing 15 has secured to said lower end a piston 21 enclosing a rubber packing 22 marginally extending therefrom to produce a tight clo- 1929, Serial no. 361,11
sure between piston andinner walls of casing15.
-The piston has formed therein a port or ports 23 for the escape of the air. I
order to preventthe escape of water from the lower part 24 of the compartment 15, into which the articles to be washed are placedyaplate valve 25 is providedmovable Within a casing or housing,2 6 formed with the lower face of the piston allowing the escape of air through ports23 during the downward movement of the piston 21, which is held onits rod bymeans of nuts 27, 28, or the like. i V A. handle 29 extends withits shaft through slot 18i'nto cylinder17 and is secured to rod 20 by. meansflofa bracket or socket 30,}01
otherwise. y
The upper end .of rod 20isbentdownwardly, as at 81, and its straight downwardly directed part32 carries acollar 33 on whicha spring t is resting with its lower end, which iswound about part 3101f rod 20fand the upper end of which "is suitably secured to mass; a i j This part32 of rod 20 is'guided withina guide35 and carries near its lower end a collar 36*against' which rests the upper end ofa spring37 wound about rod 32, the lower, end ofwhich issecured enema rod. The ar rangement of springs 34 and 37 is such that duri-ng'Tthedo wnward movement of the part. 32 of rpd20 spring 87. ,willactto cushionthe rod- -while during 'theupward movement of 7 said part 32'spring 34. will actas cushion.
The extreme lower end of part 32 of rod20 is angularly bent to form a fork 38 between v the prongs of which rod 20 passes and which is secured to the rod as shown.
The operation of my machine will be en- ,tirely clear from the above description and by inspection of the drawing, and it will be clear, that upon the vertically reciprocatory movement of the piston rod and piston by means of handle 29, the wash in chamber 24 below piston will be washed, and while the air can escape through openings 23, the water is prevented from entering the space above 1 the piston by the plate valve25.
It will be understood that I have described and shown the preferred form of my inven tion as one example of the many possible ways to practically construct the same, and that I may make such changes in its construction as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a washing apparatus, a housing, a cylindrical casing on said housing, having an elongated slot, a rod in said casing extending into said housing, a handle on said rod for vertically reciprocating said rod and extending through said slot, a piston at the lower end of said rod, the upper end of said rod bent upon itself, a guide for said bent end, the lower end of said bent end being secured to said rod, means for cushioning said rod during its reciprocation, said piston and its rod reciprocating in said housing, to wash articles in said housing by suction, and a means associated with said piston to allow the escape of air and prevent the passage of Water through said piston.
2. 1n a washing apparatus, a housing, a cylindrical casing on said housing having an elongated slot, a rod in said casing extending into said housing, a handle on said rod for vertically reciprocating the same, and eXtending through said slot, a piston at the lower end of said rod, the upper end of said rod having a portion bent upon itself, a guide on the casing for said bent end, a fork formed t with 'the lower end of said bent portion, for
securing the same to said rod, springs for cushioning said rodduring its reciprocation, said piston and its rod reciprocating in said housing to wash articles in said housing by 1 suction, a casing formed with the lower face of said piston, said piston having ports for allowing the escape of air, a housing formed with the lower face of the piston, and a plate valve movable within said housing to prevent the passage of water through the ports in said piston.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
