Trrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Springlield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovemcnts in lashing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

rhis invention relates to Washing machines.

In the ordinary washing machine the cleansingaction is effected by causing the hot soapy water or suds to pass through the clothes and it is customary to accomplish this either by forcing` the clothes'through the water, as by means of a dolly, or by imparting` movement to the clothes receptacle in such a manner as to cause the water to move from side to side thereof, thus forcing the same through the clothes.

@ne object of the present invention is'to provide a washing machine having` means for forcing` the suds or hot water through the clothes in a stationary receptacle.'

A further object of the invention is to provide such a washing machine which will be simple in its construction and operation and which can be produced at a relatively low cost.

It willbe understood, however, that this particular embodiment of theinvention has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention may take various forms and `may be applied to clothes receptacles of various kinds.

as a wooden tub having cylindrical side walls and a flat bottom 2, this tub being` mounted upon any suitable support, such as legs The tub orthe receptacle is provided with a movable closure l to permit access to be had thereto.

ln order to cause the water in the receptacle to circula-te through the clothes I have provided an apparatus for withdrawing portions of the water from the receptacle and then discharging; the same forcibly into the receptacle and through the clothes therein. This apparatus may take various forms and may be arranged in various positions with relation to the clothes receptacle, and in the present construction I have shown a plurality of devices spaced about the walls of the receptacle and communicating` therewith. here shown, each device comprises a cylinder 5 communicating` with the interior of the clothes receptacle and having' mounted therein a piston 6 by means of which the water may be drawn into the cylinder from the receptacle and then 'forced out of the receptacle through the clothes. Preferably the cylinder communicates with the receptacle near the bottom thereof and. in the present instance, each cylinder is provided at its lower end with an inlet '7 which is controlled by a flap valve 8. Further, each cylinder is provided with a discharge opening- 9 which may, if desired.r include a nozzle 10, and as here shown the discharge opening is of a long, narrow construction and the nozzle is so shaped as to spread the water as it is discharged into the receptacle. The discharge openings are arranged below the normal level of the water in the receptacle and where a plurality of devices are employed it is preferable that the discharge openings for the. several devices be arranged at diifen ent distances from the bottom of the receptacle so as to cause the water discharged into the receptacle to act upon all portions of the clothes therein. It is also desirable that a screen of some sort be provided to prevent clothes within the receptacle from being drawn into the cylinder along with the water and in the present construction I have provided the receptacle with a secondary perforated bottom 1l. extending across the full width thereof, and have so arranged the cylinders that the, inlet opening 7 is below the level ofthis secondary bottom or screen. Qonsecpientlgy.j the water will. be drawn downwardly through the clothes by the suction of the pistons in the cylinders and will then be discharged 'from the cylinders into the receptacle and through the clothes therein above the secondary bottom or screen. This secondary bottom or screen may be of any suitable form but I have, in the "iresent instance, shown the same as comprisinga series oit sections in the form ot sectors which are supported along' their converging; edges by flanges 12. r1 "his construction not only enables the screen to be easily placed in position or removed but it also provides adequate support for the intermediate portions ol.E the screen. l prefer that the cylinders 5 should be mounted pern'lancntly on the receptacle and where they are arranged within the receptacle, as here shown, the sections of the screen. are provided with recesses to receive the lower ends oli the cylinders, the cylinder being` provided with a `flange 13 to receive and support the adjacent portion of the screen. The circum'l'erential edges of the screen may be supported by a shoulder, or block. 111, as shown in Fig'. 8. The upper ends of the cylinders may, it desired, be provided with caps, or closures, la to prevent any water which may work its way past the pistons from splashing' out oil the upper ends of the cylinders, such caps being` provided with air ports 15.

The pistons may bc operated by means oli any suitable mechanism and, in the present construction, each piston has a piston rod 16 extending above the upper end o'l.l the cylinder and connected by an arm 17 with an actuating rod 18 which slidably mounted in guides 2O secured to the receptacle l. Rock arms 21 and 22 are pivotally mounted between their ends beneath the receptacle, in intersecting lines, and are connected at their ends with the lower portions ot the actuating rods 18, preferably by means oit links 23, it being` understood that each ol the rock arms is connected with two oi the actuating` rods. Rockingv movement is imparted to the arms by means of a crank shaft 24- having two cranks which are connected by means ot' links 25 and 26 with the respective rock arms. Any suitable mea-ns may be provided for rotating` the crank sha'lt but in the present instance the apparatus is intended for operation by hand and 1 have mounted on the crank shaft, at the side ol' the machine, a crank wheel 27 having` a handle 28 by means of which it may be rotated.

The operation of the apparatus will be readily understood from the foregoing` description and it will be apparent that as the crank wheel. and crank sha lt 2li are rotated the several pistons will be reciprocated in their cylinders, thus drawing` into the cylinders the hot water lirom the receptacle and then forcibly discharging` this water into the receptacle and through the clothes.` 1t will further be apparent that the apparatus for.. accomplishing.;` this may take various 'forms and may be mounted either inside or outside oit' the receptacle and may be actuated in any suitable manner either by power or by hand. l, therefore, wish it to be understood that while 1 have shown and described one embodiment el my invention l do not wish to be limited to the details thereo'li as various modilications may occur to a person skilled in the art.

Having now fully described my invention what l claim as new and desirc'to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. n a. clothes washing` machine, the combination with a clothes receptacle having a screen spared a short distance 'above thel bottom thereof, o'l a plurality oli' cylinders mounted on said receptacle and spaced one from the other about the vertical walls of sai d eceptacle, each ot said cylinders having a valve controlled inlet communicating with said receptacle below said screen and. having a lateral outlet opening directly into said receptacle above said screen and below the normal level ot the water in said receptacle, pistons mounted in said cylinders above said outlets, and means tor actuating said pistons to cause said water to be drawn downwardly through the clothes and into said cylinders upon the upward. strokes ol.I the pistons and to be 'forcibly discharged through said outlets and through the clothes in said receptacle upon the downward strokes of said pistons.

2. ln a clothes washingv machine, the combination with a clothes receptacle having a screen spaced a short distance above the bottom thereof, of a plurality or' cylinders mounted on said receptacle and spaced one from the other about the vertical walls of said receptacle. each or" said cylinders having a valve controlled inlet communicating with said receptacle below said screen and having a lateral outlet opening' directly into said receptacle above said screen and below the normal level ol the water in said receptacle, pistons mounted in said cylinders above said outlets, and means 'for actuating said pistons to cause said water to be drawn downwardly through the clothes and into said cylinders upon the upward strokes of the pistons and to be forcibly discharged through said outlets and through the clothes in said receptacle upon the downward strokes ot said pistons, said actuating means being;` so arranged that one piston will move upwardly while the other is moving downwardly.

3. In a washing` machine, the combination with a clothes receptacle having' a screen spaced a short distance above the bottom thereof, a cylinder mounted on said receptacle. having a valve controlled inlet communieating` with said receptacle below said screen,

and having` a lateral outlet opening` directly into said receptacle above said screen and below the normal level of the water in said receptacle, a solid piston mountefcl in said cylinder above said outlet, and means for actuating,` said piston to cause water to be drawn downwardly through the clothes and into said cylinder upon the upwardly stroke of the piston and to be forcibly discharged through the outlet and through the clothes in said receptacle upon the downward stroke of said piston.

5. .ln a Washing machine, the combination with a clothes receptacle, of a plurality' ot cylinders spaced about said receptacle and each having; a valve controlled inlet communicating with said receptacle and havinga discharge opening' arranged above said inlet.l a piston mounted in each cylinder, a piston rod connected with each piston and extending` above the top ot the cylinder, an actuating` rod connected "with each piston rod, rock arms mounted beneath said receptacle and.

connected with the respective actuating` rods, a crank shaft mounted beneath said receptacle and operatively connected with said rock arms, and means tor rotating,- said cranlr shaft.

6. ln a clothes washing" nnurhine7 the combination With a clothes receptacle, ot a plurality of cylinders spaced about said receptacle and each having a valve controlled inlet communicatini;` with said receptacle and havingI a discharge opening arranged above said inlet, a piston mounted in each cylinder, piston rods connected with the respective pistons and extending` above the tops of the respective cylinders, a roclr arm mounted beneath said receptacle, means for connecting said roch arm with said piston rods, and means for actuating said roclr arm.

7. ln a clothes Washing machine, a clothes receptacle, a plurality ot cylinders mounted on said receptacle, and spaced apart about the 'vertical Wall thereof, and each having a valve controlled inlet communicating` With the lower portion of said receptacle, and having` a lateral outlet opening;` directly into the upper portion oit said receptacle and belou7 the normal level ot the Water therein, the outlets from the several cylinders being arranged at different heights from the bottom t said receptacle, a piston mounted in each cylinder, and means For actuating said pistons to cause Water to be drawn downwardly through the clothes in said receptacle and into the respective cylinders upon the upward strokes or the pistons therein and to be torcibly discharged through the outlet opening` and through the clothes in said receptacle upon the downward strokes of said pistons.
