to `bring the lower `surface on or belowl a level with the lower surface of the beams.
TheV lower surface ofthe tile tubes is scratched as represented at n, for the purpose of receiving thebrown coat of plaster which adheres firmly thereto by reason of entering the furrows. These tile tubes may be made in lengths equal to the length of the beams, or in shorter sections properly put are to be employed for the additional puri 'pose ofventilating, holes 7L, t, `can be made in the top and bottom, to which registers can be adapted inthe usual manner for the passage ofair; but by connecting these tubesv `with hotair lines in the wallsheated air can be made to circulate through them, or any portion of them, and discharged into the apartments through suitable registers g, fitted to holes in the floor or tiles, and thus present a more eficient mode of heating and Ventilating buildings than any other known constructionl And again, in fitting'up the -spaces 0, '0, between the arched surface of the tubes andthe beams, the required room *can readily beleft` for water and gas pipes.
In this way floors and ceilings can be pro- `duced presenting advantages not to be attainediby any other known mode of construction, such as being equally re proof with arches of masonry, without occupying so much verticalspace in the building, and
`without the necessity of heavy walls, such as are required to resist the thrust of arches, for by the `form of the .tubes they will neither thrust against the beams nor against the walls. Ample and convenient room is obtained for water and gas pipes, with an important advantage that i by carefully grouting with cement or plaster between the tubes and the arches, in case the water pipes should burst, the ceilings below will be protected against injury from the flow of water. It will save the expense and labor of. lathing and scratch coating the ceiling. It admits of a ready, convenient and efficient system of ventilation both from the ceiling and floors, and through the center of the rooms instead of the sides as heretofore; and what is of greatimportance it presents an easy and eflicient mode of heating apartscribed of making re proof floors and ceilments. n ings by means of metallic flanehed beams in I do not Wish to be understood as limitcombination with tile tubes interposed being myself to the special form of the beams tween and resting on the flanohes of the 5 and tubes, and the kind of lling between beams, and filled in above, all substantially 15 them so long as the same result is attained as, and for the purpose speoied.
by merely formal variations.y F. A. 4PETERSEN.
What I claim as my invention andv desire Witnesses-z to secure by Letters Patent is- S. ROOT,
l0 The method substantially as herein de- THoDE BANES.
