DRIP-CUP.

; To all whom t-may concern:

Be it kno'wnthat PAUL FRAZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at NV1lmmgton, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements'in Drip-Cups, of which the iollowmg 1s a specification.

Tl .'s invention relates to improvements in umbrellas and has relation more particularly to a drip cup for umbrellas.

The primary object of the-invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily and quickly attached or detached to the umbrella tip in. such a manner, whereby when the umbrella is in a closed position, the water draining therefrom will be deposited in the drip cup and prevented from dripping on the floors ofbuildings, such as theaters, apartments, stores and the like.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein a protector is detaohably connected with the cup to prevent the breakage of the same should the umbrella be accidentally dropped and engage with the pavement when the umbrella is in a collapsed position.

The invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims;

Referring more particularly to the drawing, A denotes the umbrella, and B the tip thereof.

In the accompanying drawing, 5 designates my improved drip cup which may be made of any suitable material such as hard rubber or the like, and comprises a hollow cylindrical body portion or receptacle 6 forming within the cup a catch basin .7 for the collection of the drippings or drainings Specification of Letters Patent. formed with a closed upper end 8 and a lower open end 9 having an interiorly threaded portion 10. The open end 9 of the cup is closed by means of a cap 11 having threaded engagement with the threaded portion 10 of the casing, for permitting of the connection or removal of the cap wlth said casing. This cap is provided with an en larged central opening 12 which is of a dia meter greater than the diameter of the tip of the umbrella, whereby defining between the tip and the walls of the opening, drainage receiving spaces 13, which permits of the water from the umbrella, when the latter is in a collapsed position, to drain therefrom and through the opening 12. and be deposited within the cap basin 7 of the body portion 6.

Positioned within the body portion 6 and in close proximity with the closed end 8 thereof, is a cup 1% which is of substantially rectangular configuration and formed with a bowl-l5. The walls of the cup 15 are formed with a plurality of opposite dia metrically disposed threaded openings 16 adapted to receive the locking screws 17, Said screws are threadedly mounted in the cup 1% and upon the adjustment of the same in an inward lateral direction will cause the same to impinge against the tip B of the umbrella for locking the drip cup thereto. The cup 1a is formed with an annular base flange 18, of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the body portion 6 of the drip cup and frictionally engages with a rubber disk 19, thelatter being seated upon the inner surface of the closed end 8 of the body portion 6,. and is primarily adapted to absorb any jars, shocks or the like which the drip cup might be subject to, and preventing the loosening of the looking screws 16. Depending from the central portion of the bottom of the cup 14 is an internally threaded socket 20 which protrudes through the central aperture 21 of the disk 19, and thence through the central opening 22 of the closed end 8 and terminates flush with the exterior surface of the closed end 8.

I provide for the cup a protector 23 made preferably of soft rubber and is primarily adapted for preventing the breakage of the cup upon any accidental dropping of the umbrella or the contacting of the cup with the pavement or the like when the umbrella pair of substantially. rectangular lugs 26,

disposed to opposite sides of the threaded shank 25 and alining transversely therewith, and adapted to engage in depressions '27 formed in the eXter1orface 28 of the closed end 8 of'the body portion (3, when the protector is tightly screwed on the cup thereby preventing an'yaccidental retrograde movemerit of the protector.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction, and the nie'thodsof operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in theart to which the -iiiveiit'ien relates, and while I have described the-principlesof operation of the invention together with'the device which IHOW consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire-to haveit understood that the device qshown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may l; e=made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended thereto.

A drip'cup' for umbrellas comprising a cylindrical body portion having a closed end tormed with a centrally located opemn a cup mounted in said body portion, cushion ing means between the closed end of the body and said cup, locking means carried a protector, and a fastening plate embedded in said'protector having a portion thereof threadedly engaging in the socket, of the cup for connecting the cup to said drip cup.

2. A drip cup for umbrellas comprising a body portion having a closed end formed in the exterior surface thereof with a pair of diametrically arranged recesses, means mounted in said cup for locking the drip cup to said umbrella, a protector, and a fastoning plate embedded in the protector and formed with a pair of diametrically disposed lugs adapted, upon the threaded engagement of the fastener with the drip cup, to co-act or engage with the recesses in the closed end wall of the cup and for brevcniing any rotary movement of said proteci or.
