Description

G. L. TULLY.
Patented Apr, 23, 1918.
l/VI/E/VTOR qEorQqE L. FULLY AL O/i" GEORGE I. TULLY, 0F SOUTI-IBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A-SSIGNOB. T0 AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SOUTHBBIIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY ASSO- CIATION 01E 'MASSACHUSE'ITS.
TEMPLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apt". es, mi.
Application filed October 26, 1917. Serial No. 198,595.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. TULLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temples, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined temple and buckle for use on goggles and has for its main object to provide a device of this character which can be readily attached to the temple'lugs of goggle or spectacle frames and used to fasten the securing strap about the head of the wearer.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a combined temple and buckle which is stamped out of a single piece of material and formed to replace the usual goggle temple whereby the securing strap is attached direct to the temple.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is an end elevation of a pair of goggles illustrating the application of my improved temple and buckle.
Fig. II is a plan view of the device after being stamped out.
Fig. III is a top plan of the same ready for application.
Fig. IV is aplan view illustrating a sli htly modified form of the invention. and Fig. V is a side elevation of the for shown in Fig. IV.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to form my improved goggle temple and buckle of a single piece of material which can be readily stamped out of brass, nickel, aluminum, or a gold filled material and when stamped out will include a substantially oval shaped body member 1 and extending longitudinally through the central portion of the body is a bar 2 one of the longitudinal edges of which is notched as shown at 3 to provide a plurality of teeth 4. In the completed article this bar 2 is turned at substantially right angles with respect to the bodv by twisting the same at each end as shown at 5 so that the teeth 4 will extend outwardly at right angles to the body for engagement with the head strap 5, the end of. which is passed upwardly through the body between one side of the body and the bar and then passed down between the other side of the bar and the body whereby any strain or pulling movement on the body portions of the strap will tend to force the same into engagement with the teeth and hold the strap 5 against further movement.
From the above it will be readily'apparcut that by inserting thestrap through the buckle as described above it will be securely held in place after being drawn through the buckle in one direction. the body portion of the strap being held in such a position by being shaped over the head of the wearer that it is always pulling the strap into engagement with the teeth thus holding the strap against movement with respect to the bar 2. Thus the head strap may he quickly and readily attached to the temple to securely hold the goggles or spectacles onto the head of the wearer.
The shank 6 which provides for the temple connection projects at ri ht an les from the body at substantially midway of its ends and the material therein is twisted as shown at 7 so that the same is disposed in a plane at substantially ri 'ht an les to the body 1 and the outer end thereofis formed into a temp e head 8 having the usual stop lug 9. This head 8 is ada ted to be arranged between the ears 10 of the frame Ill. and securely held in place by means of the dowel pin 12 whereby the strap 5 is attached to the oggles or spectacles through the medium of the buckle.
In Fig. IV I have illustrated a modified form of the invention wherein the bar 2 is formed separate from the body I and is secured thereto by soldering or otherwise securing the same to the ends of the body as shown at 13. The shank 6 which forms the temple is also made of a separate piece of material and attached in any suitable manner to the side portion of the body I and disposed in a plane at substantially ri ht angles thereto. The bar 2 is also provided with the usual fastening teeth I which are disposed at right angles to the body portion for engagement with the strap when drawn through the body and over the bar 2'.
From the above descripti taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be readily apparent thatI' have pro vided a. device which will replace the usual templeand at-the same time provide fastening means for the head strap which is adapted to secure the goggles or spectacles onto the head of the wearer. Furthermore this device can be quickly stamped from a simple piece of material. at a comparatively 'lOW cost and can be made either of a simple piece of material or in two or more parts and secured together as. previously set forth.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described ineluding a body member, teeth carried thereby and a temple portion extending trom one side of thej'fbodfy member.
2. device of'the character described including a body member, a toothed bar car- ,rieplbyi the body and a. temple portion extending. from one side of the body member.
3. A device of the-character described including a body member, a bar extending longitudinally of the body and disposed in a plane at right angles thereto, teeth formed on said bar and a temple portion extending from one side of the body member.
4:. A device of the character. described including a body member, a toothed bar carried by the body, a temple portion extendingfrom the body at one side and disposed in a plane at right angles to the body.
5. A device of'the character described including a body member, a longitudinal bar carried by the body and disposed at right angles to the body, teeth carried by the bar, a temple portion extending from the body at one side and disposed in a plane at right angles to the body.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
GEORGE L. TULLY.
