OPHTHALMIC-MOUNTING.

' IN ME IV TOR 1/60 Oswald 4 111011 MA WM ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES LEO O. GAGNON, OF SOUTI-IBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY ASSOCIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
PATENT OFFICE.
OPHTHALMIC MOUNTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1920.
Application filed October 13, 1917. Serial No. 196,409.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO O. GAcNoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ophthalmic Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ophthalmic mountings and has particular reference to an improved construction particularly adapted for use in the formation of an adjustable spectacle frame.
One of the leading objects of my present invention is the provision of an extremely Simple and inexpensive construction which may be easily formed from a single piece of material and will dispense to the largest possible degree with the use of solder or the like in its construction.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of an improved one piece construction in which the parts will be so connected as to facilitate the ready adjustment of the lenses as desired.
Other objects and advantages of my improved construction should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claim without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.
, Figure I represents a front elevation of one form of my construction.
Fig. II represents a similar view of another form thereof.
Fig. III represents a plan view.
In the drawings, I have shown my improved construction as formed from a single piece of material comprising a central or bridging member 1 of greater width than thickness, and having its greater width disposed in a vertical plane, the material adjacent the ends of the bridging member being twisted at right angles to provide the seats 2, terminating in the lens frames 8, the ends of the material being outwardly bent 1n the attaching portions 4:, adapted to be secured as by the screws or fastening devices 5, to the seats 2.
By reference to Figs. I and II it will thus be seen that the central or bridging member 1 is disposed in a vertical plane, whereby it presents a flat face to softly contact with the face of the wearer, and a rigid cross member tending to hold and preserve an attractive shape under all conditions. At the same time the twisting of the material provides, as at the points 6, or joinder between the portions 1 and 2, a point of maximum flexibility, whereby, the mounting may be readily bent at these points at each end of the bridge to increase or decrease the pupillary distance thereof, to satisfy the requirements of the individual wearer.
To retain the mounting on the face I may, as illustrated in Fig. II, secure to in frames 3, the blocks 7 having slots 8 forme in their outer ends to receive the temples 9, or may insert, as between the lens 10 and frame 3, the leather or other side shield member 11 carrying the head band or attaching device 12. Similarly, if a folding shield, such as shown in Fig. II, is desired, I may secure to the frame 3, by riveting, soldering or the like, as desired, the pins 13, on which is pivoted the side screen member 14:. In either event, however, it is to be noted that I have provided an improved simplified construction in which solder joints between the bridge and eye wires are eliminated, whereby there is no tendency for the mounting to pull apart or become loosened at this point, as by adjustment of the parts, but on the other hand the adjustment is much facilitated and aided by the formation of the twisting at 6, facilitating bending of the bridge at this point to attain the desired result, while maintaining the general shape and appearance of the bridge.
I claim:
An ophthalmic mounting formed from a continuous piece of flat stock comprising a central bridge member having its greater ed termini of the bridge, substantially as width disposed in a vertical plane, said illustrated. V 10 bridge member terminating in portions In testimony whereof I affix my signature twisted at right angles to provide flexibility in the presence of two witnesses.
5 and adjustability at the twists, the portions LEO O. GAGNON.
, beyond the twists being formed into circular Witnesses:
lens frames having terminal outwardly de- E. M. HALvoRsEN,
flected ends detachably secured to the twist- H. E. COLEMAN.
