To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. ADAM,'deceased, here appearing by administrator, R. STUART ADAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antiskidding Tread Devices for Yielding Tires; and I, by said administrator, do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in antiskidding tread devices for yielding tires, such as pneumatic or cushion tires of soft rubber, and particularly to improvements in that type of such devices in which tough, non-metallic, flexible, compressible pads, such, for example, as leather or rubber pads, are provided for inducing friction between the tire and the surface with which it comes in contact. The object of my invention is to provide a novel construction of attaching means for the pads which is simple, economical, and at the same time highly eflicient, and which permits the ready detachment of the pads singly, for the purpose of replacing them when they become old or worn out. The construction of attaching means to which the present invention relates is of the same general type as that disclosed in Letters Patent granted to me January 9th, 1912, No. 1,014,358, and in a prior application of mine filed February 23rd, 1911, Serial No. 610,216.
My invention also relates to a novel pad of the kind described, which, by reason of its form, combines a maximum of efliciency with a minimum of expense of manufacture.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pad provided with my improved attaching 'means at each end thereof.

Fig. 3 is a view representing a transverse section in a plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing my improved form of pad with the attaching means secured to one end thereof.
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the several parts of the attaching means to be hereafter more particularly referred to.

Referring now to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, 12 indicates a pad, made of leather, hard, tough rubber, or other suitable non-metallic, tough, flexible material which tends to induce friction. The pad so far as the attaching means is concerned may be made of any form adapted for use in an anti-skidding tread device of the type described, and, as
shown in Fig. 1, is in the form of a single straight, narrow strip. In Fig. 4 I have shown my improved form of pad but this will be described later as I shall first refer simply to the attaching means. The lateral edges of the pad adjacent its ends 14, 14, are provided with oppositely disposed, longitudinally spaced, pairs of notches 13 13 13 13*, within which the attaching devices are adapted to engage, as will presently appear. The parts 13, 13 of said lateral edges intermediate the said notches are curved in the arc of a circle.
The pad 12 is provided with attaching means at each end. Said attaching means, in each instance, comprises a flanged lower plate 15 having abase 15*, which lies beneath the end of the pad, and which is provided with oppositely disposed, upright lateral flanges 16, 16, adapted for engagement with the arcuate parts 13, 13 of the lateral edges of the pad with their ends extending into the notches 13 13 13",13", at the ends of said arcuate parts; and an upper plate 17 which rests on the top surface of the pad above the lower plate 15 and is engaged by the upper marginal parts 16*, 16 of the upright flanges 16, 16, which are bent inwardly and downwardly upon the same, as
best shown in Fig. 3. By this construction, the upper ,and lower plates arerigidly secured'to the pad. In Fig. 1 the right hand end of the pad shows the upper and lower plates as they appeanbefore,the upper marginal parts of the lateral flanges of the lower plate have been bent downwardly.
The base 15 of the lower plate 15 is provided with an extension 18,-having an aperture 18 adapted to be engaged by the hook offa link,19, Asshown, saideXtension 18 is inclined downwardly at an angle to the base 15 so that; thesame will lie in contact withfthe. surface ofthe tire to whichmydevice is applied. An attaching device for a pad, said pad having an end part provided with longitudinally spaced pairs of oppositely disposed notches in its lateral edges, said device comprising upper and lower plates engaging respectively against the top and bottom surfaces of the end part of the pad, one of said plates having upright lateral flanges engaging the lateral edges of said end part and extending at their ends into said notches, said flange having marginal parts turned down and clamped against the other plate, and one of said plates having an apertured extension.
3. An attaching device for a pad, said pad having an end part provided with longitudinally spaced pairs of oppositely disposed notches in its lateral edges which are arcuate between said notches, said device comprising upper and lower annular plates engaging respectively against the top and bottom surfaces of the end part of said pad, the bottom plate having upright lateral flanges engaging the arcuate edges of said end part and extending at their ends into said notches, said flanges having their upper marginal parts turned down on and clamped against the top plate and the lower plate having an extension for the attachment of a link.
4. An attaching device for a pad, said pad having an end part provided with longitudinally spaced pairs of oppositely dis posed notches in its lateral edges which are arcuate intermediate said notches, said device comprising upper and lower annular plates engaging respectively against the top and bottom surfaces of the end part ofthe pad, the upper plate having an annular groove in its bottom face, the bottom plate having upright lateral flanges engaging the arcuate edges of said pad end part and extending at their ends into said notches, said flanges having their upper marginal parts turned down on and clamped against the top plate, and the lower plate having an extension for the attachment of a link.
