Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PIPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boilers for Steam and Hot-l/Vater Heating, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boilers for steam and hot water heating.
The object of the invention is to increase the heating surface of the boiler by the use of a water-column in the fire-chamber, the same being connected laterally to the water space of the body o-f the boiler bywater tubes and terminating at the top in the uppermost water section, said column being closed at the bottom and extending down into the bed of the fuel into proximity to the fuel supporting grate.
Opposite sides of the water-column are connected by water tubes arranged in vertical planes to the body of the boiler, these tubes being arranged in such proximity to each other as to prevent any considerable portion of the fuel from passing between them, without preventing a su'icient draft.
This arrangement of water column and lateral connections serves as a wall to divide the fuel containing part of the fire-chamber into two separate furnaces, only one of which need be used in mild weather as the boiler is provided with door-openings on opposite sides of the wall formed by the watertubes so that fuel may be supplied on either I or both sides of the wall.
By this construction a considerable portion of the water is always subjected to the greatest heat of the re, thereby effecting a great saving of fuel and promoting the circulation of the water and generation of the steam.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a horizontal section on the line 1 1 in Fig. 2, of a boiler provided with my improvement.

The water column is connected laterally to the water space cl2 by tubes f which are arranged on opposite sides of said column in the same vertical plane, said tubes being arranged in such proximity to each other as to interfere with fuel passing between said tubes while permitting a draft between them.
The boiler is provided with doors opening on opposite sides of the wall formed by the water tubes so that `the boiler may be supplied, on either or both sides of said wall, with fuel.
I claim as my invention:
1. A boiler having a central water-column pendant from the top of the fire-chamber and extending downward into proximity to the fuel-supporting surface and having tubular lateral connections with the body of the boiler, the lower end of said column being far enough above said surface to allow the bed of fuel to extend under said column and connections.
2. A boiler having a central water column pendant from the top of the re-chamber and extending downward into proximity to the fuelsupporting surface and having tubular lateral connections at its lower portion with the body of the boiler, the lower end of said column being far enough above said surface to alldw the bed of fuel to extend under said column and connections.
3. A boiler having a central water column pendant from the top of the re-chamber and extending downward into proximity to the fuel-supporting surface and having tubular lateral connections with the body of said boiler, said connections being arranged in vertical planes at intervals and dividing provided with feed doors on opposite sides said fire-chamber. of said lateral connections. l0 4f.
