FRANK LOUIS MILLER, OF PARKEBSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO PERFECTION WOOD STEAMING RETORT 00., OF PARKEESBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA. v
FASTENEB. FOR RETORT-DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' PatentedApr.9,1918.
Application filed July 30, 1917. Serial No. 183,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK LOUIS MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Retort-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fasteners for closures or doors for retorts or other containers of fluid under pressure, and aims to provide improvements therein.
Thepresent invention provides a fastener for closure or door of the kind above referred to, which is of simple construction, effective in operation,and consisting of simple and readily assembled parts. 7
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 shows a door on a retort, the door being in closed position, and viewed in front elevation;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the door being viewedin rear elevation;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 33,
Fig. 1.
In said drawings, numeral 1 designates the open head of a steaming retort, or simi- .be swung to open or closed positions. A
hinge 5 conveniently serves this purpose.
For locking the door or plate to the retort head, the'door or plate 2 is provided with a plurality of locking levers 6. ,The retort head is provided with an inner shoulder or shoulders 7 with which theends of the looking levers 6 are adapted to engage, in locking position, to hold the dooror plate 2 locked.
The locking levers 6 are pivotally connected to the door 2, as, by means of U-bolts 8 passing through slots 9 in the locking levers 6. These slots 9 are preferably elon- V gated to permit of radial extension, and the ment by suitable means, as a shaft 11. This shaft .11 is screw-threaded and preferably engages a nut 12 having bearing upon the plate or door 2. The disk 10 is conveniently carried upon a reduced end 13 of the shaft 11, and the connection between the disklO and the shaft 11 is such that the shaft may turn without turning the disk.
A washer and cotter pin 14' serve to hold the disk 10 upon the reduced portion 13 of the shaft.
The nut 12 is rotatable in its bearing in the door or plate 2, and between the nut 12 and the disk 10 there is a pin and slot connection 15. Turning movement of the nut 12 is therefore communicated to the disk 10. The levers 6 being connected to the disk 10 by means permitting of the turning movement of the disk 10, as, for example, pins 16 (Fig. 2), may be moved by the disk 10 into and out of engagement with the shoulder or shoulders 7 of the head 1. When the disk 10 is in one position (as, for example, a position wherein the levers extend radially therefrom),'the arrangement of the parts is such that the ends of the levers 6 engage the shoulder or shoulders 7.- By turning the disk 10 the lever is turned in its pivot 8,. and is also preferably drawn inward on its pivot 8. As here shown, the combined turning of the levers on their pivots 8, and the inward movement of the levers on their pivots 8,
.withdraw these levers from behind the shoulders, so that the door may be opened. A hand-wheel 16 or the like serves for turning the shaft 11, and a handle 17 or other suitable means, serves for turning the nut 12.
Operation: When the parts are in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the door or plate 2 may be placed or swung in position to jclose the in the retort heaii1 1-.
