Be it known that I. JAMES E. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, Marion county, and State of Indiana, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Foot and Leg Rests, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to foot and leg rests and its object is to provide a portable article of the class referred to having means whereby it may be adjusted to provide either a horizontal support adapted to conveniently sustain the leg of the user when extended, or an inclined support adapted to receive the foot on a lower level than that of the horizontal support.

With this object in view, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the construction and arrangement hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In these drawings, Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the improved foot and leg rest and Fig. 2 a front view in elevation thereof, with the supporting leg rest leaf broken away.

Referring to the drawings, the rest comprises legs 1 and an upright body portion 2 having inclined facing members or rails at its sides. Pivoted at the upper end of this body portion on suitable pins 3, is a leg and foot supporting leaf 4. T 0 this leaf 4 is pivotally connected a short extension section 5 by means of hinges 6. The section 5 is provided with a stop plate 7 adapted to engage the under surface of the leaf 4: when the supports formed by said leaf and the section 5 are carried to horizontal position, so as to thereby maintain the section 5 extended outwardly in continuation of the leaf 4.

Fastened to the under side of the member 4 is a lug 8 which is pivotally connected to a limb 9 of a jointed and folding bracket member. the other limb 10 of which is pivoted to limb 9 and is provided with an overlapping hinge stop plate 11. A supporting Y member consisting of the parts 9 and 10 is provided at each side of the rest, and the lower ends of the members 10 are fixed on a rocking shaft 12 which is journaled in the sides of the body 2. Fixed on this rocking shaft 12, outside the body is an operating handle 13 adaptedto impart rocking movement to the shaft. A ledge 15 projects 011twardly and angularly from the base of the body 1 and serves to support the section 5 in inclined position when the leaf is lowered and serves to act as a heel support for the foot of the user.

In the use of the device, when it is desired to employ the same as an inclined support for the foot the device occupies the position indicated in Fig. 1 by the dotted lines. In this disposition of the parts, the shelf 5 will be folded upwardly on its pivot so as to project up at an inclination to the horizontal in such position as to conveniently support the rear of the heel of the user and with said extension shelf member supported on the ledge 15. The main supporting leaf 4 will extend upward substantially at right angles to the shelf 5, and forms a support for the sole of the foot.

When it is desired to adjust the rest to horizontal position so as to more comfortably support the leg of the user, the handle 13 is turned so as to rock the shaft 12, whereupon the limbs 10 will be carried forward until the main leaf 4: is forced upwardly and the continued movement of the shaft will serve to spread the limbs 9 and 10 apart, and carry the members 4 and 5 into horizontal position in which position the limbs 9 and 10 will be in alinement and the rest will be held rigidly in horizontal position by means of the hinge stop 11 which passes over the joint between the two limbs 9 and 10. In this arrangement, the section 5 forms a continuation of the leaf 4.. To release the parts, the handle 13 is turned causing the jointed limbs 9 and 10 to collapse whereupon the leaf and its extension will drop down upon the body of the stand.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A foot and leg rest consisting of an upright portable body adapted to be supported on the floor and having inclined facing members, a leaf hinged to the upper end of said body and adapted to be supported by said inclined members when the leaf is lowered, an extension member hinged to said leaf at its outer end, a ledge fixed to the lower end of said body adapted to support said extension at an angle to the leaf when the latter is in inclined position, jointed pivoted bracket arms, the inner one of said arms having its lower end pivoted to the said body at the lower part of the latter and the outer end of the outer arm being piv oted to said leaf, a rocking shaft mounted in said body and constituting thepivotal support for the inner arm and an operating member fixed on said rocking shaft for shifting said jointed arms to enable the leaf In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 7 my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, 19 this 25th day of April, A.
