My invention relates to hoisting engines in its general adaptation, and in particular to that class designed primarily for use in clearing cutover land, such as pulling and bunching stumps, piling and loading logs,
pulling underbrush, and other heavy duty The object of my invention is to provide a mechanism simple and strong in its construction, conveniently manipulated, and efficient in operation. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in wh1ch Figure 1 is a top plan view of an engine having my invention embodied in its construction;

Thecrank shaft 22 is journaled in two bearings 24 carried by the engine base 20, upon opposite sides of the crank part 25 of the engine crank shaft,,and a third adjustable bearing 26 carried by a pillow block 27 secured to the'engine sub-base 18, and 28 represents a power transmission pinion securedto the engine crank shaftinside of the bearing 26 and meshing with an intermediate pinion 29 jo'urnaled upon a stub shaft secured to the pillow block 27.

shaft and havlng ournaled thereon a gear wheel 32 and a winding drum 33; the gear wheel meshing with the intermediate pinion gear wheel 32 ,the opposite end of the sleeve engaging with the adjacent hearing block 30; Slidably mounted and journaled upon the sleeve-35 is a combined pinion 39 and clutch ring 40, the clutch ring being adapted to operatively engage with the adjacent clutch rim 34 when moved in one direction, and to be disengaged therefrom when moved in an opposite direction; the hub of the clutch ring being provided with a peripheral channel that receives a two-part clutch shipping ring 41 that is connected With the bearing block 30 by means of rods 42, having their axes in a vertical plane and provided with right and left threaded portions at their opposite ends that engagewith like threaded openings in the clutch shipping ring and bearing block. The winding drum 33 is-provided upon the end adjacent the gear wheel 32 with a clutch ring 43 adapted to operativelyengage with the adjacent clutch rim 34 when the drum is moved in one dlrectlon, and to be disengaged therefrom when moved 1n an opposite direction;
the drum being rotatably and slidably mounted'upon the shaft 31, and 44 represents washers interposed between the inner end ofthe drum and the adjacent end of the hub of the gear wheel 32. The opposite end Y of the drum is provided with a channeled brakerim 45 that operatively receives a brake band 46, and an axially extending annular flange member47 p'rovidedwi'th a peripheral channel48 that receives a twopart clutch shipping ring 49, like in form with theclutch shipping ring 41, and connected in the samemanner by means of right and left threaded rods 50 with the adjacent bearing block 30.

and the other arm, by means of a link 60, with the lower end of aconnecting bar 61 pivotally connected with the outer ends of arms 62 adjustable angularly upon the rods 42, whereby, when the hand lever 54 is turned axially away from the machine, the rods 42are turned in a direction to cause the clutch ring-'40 to engage with the adjacent clutch rim 34 in a manner to cause the combined pinion 39 and clutchring 40 to rotate with the'gear wheel 32; and when the hand lever 54 is movedaxially toward the machine the rods42 are turned in a direction to separate the clutch members.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, an engine frame includingv a turn table member longitudinally disposed, and parallel frame plates having their lower sides secured to opposite sides of saidmemher, said plates having-a series of gaps spaced apartalongtheir upper sides, said gaps having front and rear end walls, sleeved brackets received by said gaps and secured to said plates, andtransversegear carrying shaftshaving their opposite ends received by said sleeved brackets and secured thereto, winding drums journaledupon said shafts, said sleeved brackets engaging with the end walls of said gaps in the direction of the line of pull of said drums and detachable laterally.
2. In a machine of the class-described, a frame, an engine carried by said frame and including a power shaft, a hoisting mechanism carried by said frame including a series of fixed shafts, a winding-drum carried by one of said shafts, a gear wheel rotatable upon one of said'fixed shafts and operatively connected with said power shaft, said wheel having a clutch rim, a combined clutch memher and pinion rotatably and slidably mounted upon said shaft-,a' sleeve j ournaledupon one The hand leof said fixed shafts, a gear wheel secured to one end of said sleeve and engagingwlth said pinion, a pinion secured to the opposite end ofsaid sleeve, a second winding drum rotatable upon one of said fixed'shafts, a pinion releasably secured to one end of said drum and engaging with the gear wheel secured to said sleeve, a gear wheel releasably secured to the opposite end ofsaid drum and engaging with the pinion secured to said sleeve.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, an engine carried by sald frame and 7 including a power shaft, a hoisting mechanism carried by saidframe. including a series of fixed shafts, a gear wheel rotatable on one of said fixed shafts and operatively connected with said power shaft, said wheel having a clutch rim, a winding drum carried by said shaft, a combined clutch member and pinion rotatably and slidably mounted upon said shaft, a sleeve journaled upon one of said fixedshafts, a gear wheel secured to one end of said leeve and engaging with said pinion, a supplemental rim forming part of said gear wheel and provided with pawl engaging teethya pinion secured to the opposite end of said sleeve, a second winding drum rotatable upon one of said fixed shafts, av pinion releasably secured to one end of said drum and engaging with the gear wheel secured to said sleeve, a gearwheel releasably secured" to the opposite end of said drum and engaging with the pinion secured to said sleeve, anda locking pawl mechanism adaptedto engage with aid supplementalrim in a mannerto hold said second drum against a reverserotation;
4. In a machine of the class described, a frame, an engine carried by said frame and including a power shaft, a hoisting mechanism carried by said frame including a series of fixed shafts, a gear wheel rotatable :uponone of said. fixed shafts and operatively connected with said power shaft, a winding drum mounted upon said fixed shaft, said whee-l having a clutch rim, acombined clutch member and pinionrotatably and slidably mounted upon said sh ft, a sleeve journaled uponone of said fixed shafts, 'gear wheel-secured to one end of said sleeve and ngaging with aid pinion, a pinion secured to the opposite end of said sleeve, a second windingv drum rotatable upon one of said fixed shafts, a pinion releasably secured to one end of said drum andengaging with the gear wheel secured to said sleeve, a gear wheel releasably secured to the opposite end of said drum and engaging with the pinionsecured to said sleeve, said drum having a friction rim, and a motion reversing mechanism carried by said frame including a power shaft, a hoisting mechanism carried by said frame including a series of fixed shafts, a gear wheel rotatable upon one of said fixed shafts and operatively connected with said power shaft, a winding drum mounted upon said fixed shaft, said wheel having a clutch rim, a combined clutch member and pinion rotatably and slidably mounted upon said shaft, a sleeve journaled upon one of said fixed shafts, a gear wheel secured to one end of said sleeve and engaging with said pinion, a pinion secured to the opposite end of said sleeve, a second winding drum rotatable upon one of said fixed shafts, a pinion releasably secured to one end of said drum and engaging with the gear wheel secured to said sleeve, a gear wheel releasably secured to the opposite end of said drum and engaging with the pinion secured to said sleeve, said drum having a friction rim, 3 rock shaft journaled in bearings carried by said frame, a friction Wheel carried by said shaft, a fixed stud carried by said frame, a pinion journaled upon said stud and engaging with the first named gear wheel, a friction rim rotatable with said pinion and means for moving said friction wheel toward or from the axes of said second drum and last named pinion whereby the direction of motion of said drum may be reversed.

In a machine of the class described, a frame, an engine carried by said frame and including a power shaft, a hoisting mechanism carried by said frame including a series of fixed shafts, a gear wheel rotatable upon one of said fixed shafts and operatively connected With said power shaft, said wheel having a clutch rim, a winding drum mounted upon said fixed shaft, a combined clutch member and pinion rotatably and slidably mounted upon said shaft, a sleeve journaled upon one of said fixed shafts, a gear wheel secured to one end of said sleeve and engaging with said pinion, a pinion secured to the opposite end of said leeve, a econd winding drum rotatable upon one of said fixed shafts, a pinion releasably secured to one end of said drum and engaging with the gear wheel secured to said sleeve, a g ar wheel releasably secured to the opposite end of said drum and engaging with the pinion secured to said sleeve, said drum having a friction rim a rock Shaft journaled in bearings carried by said frame, a friction wheel carried by said shaft, a fixed stud carried by said frame, a pinion journaled upon said stud and engaging with the first named gear wheel, a friction rim rotatable with said pinion, and means for moving said friction wheel toward or from the axes of said second named drum and last named pinion whereby the direction of motion of said drum may be reversed, said means including an eccentric sleeve secured to said rock shaft, a bushing carried by said sleeve and having said friction wheel journaled thereon.
