HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,823, dated November 26, 1889.

Myimprovement is for simplifying the apparatus and lessening the weight and cost of the same, and also for facilitating the change of gearing for the purpose of increasing the speed with which the article is hoisted for light articles or lessening the speed and increasing the power for heavy articles.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view, partly in section, of my improved hoisting apparatus; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section at the line 0c 0c.
The main shaft A is supported in suitable boxes or bearings 2 uponthe cross-frames Z), that are over the hoistway or elevator-shaft, and at one end of the shaft Ais a hoist-wheel c, the edge of which is usually grooved and sometimes provided with V-shaped cleats to prevent the rope or chain d slipping, and this rope or chain is endless and hangs down from the upper part of the building through holes in the various floors, so that either part of the rope or chain can be pulled upon to rotate the hoist-Wheel c and shaft A in either one direction or the other. Upon this shaft A is a hoisting drum or Wheel 0, the periphery of which is either grooved,as represented, for the rope or chain f, that passes over such hoist-drum and hangs down through the hoistway, or such rope is coiled around the drum and one end fastened thereto, both these modes of construction being well known in elevators; or a car may be suspended from one end of the rope f and a balancing-Weight from the other end, and I apply the brake 9 around the cylindrical flange portion 3 of the drum 6. One end of this brake-strap is fastened and the other end acted upon by the lever 72 and a rope or chain 7&2 hanging down acter; but I prefer to make use of a coupling. formed as an internal gear at 1 upon the side or end of the drum 6, and to provide upon the sliding coupling teeth corresponding in number to the teeth of the internal gearclutch i, so that the clutch may be connected at as many places as there are teeth, and this sliding couplingk is acted upon by a lever Z upon the fulcrum 5.
Upon the shaft A, at the opposite side to the coupling is, is a gear-wheel m, fitted to slide upon the shaft and a key 6, and this gear-wheel is moved endwise by the lever n, having a forked end passing into the grooved hub upon the gear-wheel, and this lever 11 is preferably upon the fulcrum 5 and the two levers may be connected by a screw-bolt 8, so as tobe moved together, or they may be moved separately, if desired. lVithin the cylindrical flange portion 3 of the hoistingdrum is an internal gear 0, and there is an intermediate gear 19, the teeth of which are always in gear with the/internaLgear 0, and
the stud or go dgeon 10, upon which this Wheel p rotates, is fastened to one of the crossframes 1). It is preferable to make the gearwheel m of the same size and with the same number of teeth as the sliding coupling is, so that the coupling is may be slipped out of engagement with the clutchz' simultaneously with the gear-Wheel m, meshing into the teeth of the intermediate gear-Wheel p, and the parts are to be so placed that the sliding coupling is does not separate from the clutch t' until after the teeth of m mesh with the teeth of the wheel 13, so that the hoisting-drum is never disconnected from the shaft A, and it will be apparent that when the coupling is is within the clutch 'i the drum 6 will be rotated at the same speed as the shaft A, and
g the hoist-rope f will receive its most rapid movement; but when the article to be raised is heavier the levers l and n are moved by hand or by a suitable connection extending down the hoisting-way, so as to separate the coupling is from the clutch t and simultaneously connect the wheel m with the gear 19, and in this position the shaft A will be revolved a greater number of times than the drum 6, the power being in proportion to the relative sizes of the internal gear 0 and gearwheel m.
The apparatus thus far described is very simple and compact and only one shaft is made use of in obtaining the two speeds and proportionate power, and this apparatus, under most circumstances, will be all that is necessary for ordinary hoisting-ways; but occasionally very heavy articles require to be raised, and to meet this emergency I provide a second shaft Q in boxes 12 upon the crossframes 1) b, and upon one end of this shaft Q is a small pinion r, and upon the other end a large gear-wheel s, and upon the shaft Ais a pinion t. This shaft Q can he slipped endwise Within the bearings 12 and held by the collar and clamp-screw 14 against one of the bearings in either position to which it may' be moved. In Fig. 1 the fulllines represent such shaft, pinion, and gear-wheel as out of action, and the dotted lines represent the same as in position for use, the shaft Q being slipped endwise to bring the pinion 7 into mesh with the internal gear 0 and the gear 8 with the pinion t, and the proportion of this gearing is such that the shaft A will be revolved a large number of turns to one revolution of the hoist-drum e, and the hoisting capacity augmented thereby correspondingly. In this case, however, it is necessary to disconnect the coupling k from the clutch t' and also the wheel m from the intermediate gear 19, and to do this the bolt or screw 8 is to be removed, so that the levers n and Z can be moved independent of each other.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the main shaft A and hoisting-drum e upon such shaft, of the sliding coupling is and the sliding gear m, both upon the shaft A, the levers for moving the same, said drum 8 having the coupling-clutch 2' and the internal gear 0, and the gear-wheel 19 between the movable gear m and the internal gear 0, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the shaft Aand hoist-wheel c and rope d, of the drum 6, loose upon the shaft A, the brake-strap g and its actuating-rope, said drum 6 having the clutch z' and internal gear 0, the sliding coupling 10 and sliding gear-Wheel m' on the shaft A, the intermediateWheelp,forconnectingthegearm and the internal gear 0, and the levers h and n, pivoted at 5, and a connection between the said levers,whereby the coupling kand gear-wheel m are moved simultaneously to couple the drum and shaft directly together or intermediately through the internal gear 0, wheel p, and gear m, substantially as set forth.
3. The combinatiomwiththe shaft A, hoistwheel 0', and hoisting-drum e, loose upon the shaft and having theinternal gear, of the intermediate wheels 1) and a stationary support and hoisting-drum 6, having the internal gear 0,0f the sliding gear-wheel m,and intermediate gear 10, and the second shaft Q, pinion r, and gear-wheel 8 upon the shaft Q, said shaft Q being within bearings, so that it may be moved endwise to connect or disconnect the gearing and the pinion t on shaft A, substantially as set forth.
5'. The combination,with the shaft A,drum e, and coupling-clutch k 'i, for connecting the drum with the shaft or disconnecting the same, of the second shaft Q, pinion 1', gearwheel 8 upon the shaft Q, and internal gear 0, for applying to the drum a powerful rotation when the coupling is disconnected, and the pinion t on shaft A, substantially as set forth.
