GATE-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918.
Application filed December 26, 1916.. Serial No. 138,700.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. BARNES and Eocnn'r J. RANDALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gate-Hinges, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to gate hinges shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the following specification and claims.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device formed of sheet metal by suitable blanking and forming dies that a finished product may be rapidly obtained at a minimum manufacturing cost and without the necessary refinishing or drilling as required by many devices of this character formed of malleable or cast iron.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a construction adapted to meet the requirements of tubular gate frames of vary ing diameter so that when brought under tension by the adjustment of a connecting bolt, the respective members forming the device securely grip the gate frame, while permitting the portion sleeved upon the hinge pintle to freely rotate thereon.
\Vit-h the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment disclosed hereby without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is an elevation of the device as it appears upon leaving a blanking die.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed device showing a fragment of a gate frame, and its hinge pintle in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through a tubular gate frame and binge pintle, showin the device clamped to the frame.
lieferring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings 2- A, denotes a tubular gate frame, and B,
a hinge pintle, both being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
C, O, designates a pair of coacting members constructed of sheet metal having arcshaped ends D, and D ;the portions D, of the respective members being interlocked as indicated at cl, and tightly clamped upon the frame A, by a transverse bolt E, projecting through an aperture 0, provided in the wall of each portion between their areshaped ends. The dotted lines in Fig. 3 serve to indicate that the walls of the respective members are sufficiently resilient to admit of being drawn together by the adj ustment of the bolt whereby the device may be securely clamped upon the gate frame;- the diameter however of that portion of the device surrounding the hinge pintle being sufficiently large to admit of its freely turning thereon.
It will be noted that in forming the device the wall at c, is raised to provide a relatively wide surface against which the head of the bolt and nut may bear ;-the surface being level with the periphery of the arc-shaped portion surrounding the hinge pintle.-1hus a common form of wrench may be used for adjusting the nut to clamp the device upon a gate f 'ame.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of coacting sheet metal members having are-shaped ends, the areshaped ends of the members at'one end of the device having an interlocking connection consisting of a slot formed in one member and a tongue on the other member adapted to fit in said slot, each member between its arc-shaped ends being raised to the level of the surface of one of the arc-shaped ends and forming a relatively broad surface, said members being perforated through said raised portions, a headed bolt passed through the perforation and having its head bearing against the respective broad surfaced raised portion, and a nut having working fit on the bolt and bearing against the broad surfaced raised portion of the other member, whereby said members may be adjustably clamped upon a gate frame and upon a hinge pintle.
2. A device of the character specified, comprising similar members formed of sheet metal blanks, each member having its end portions pressed. outwardly to form re cesses, which unitedly provide openings when the members are placed together; and
having portions intermediate the recesses pressed outwardly and apertured, and one of the members having 2]. terminal tongue and the other a terminal matching opening to receive the tongue, whereby to provide an interlocking connection between the members flush with their inner and outer Walls, and securing means passing through.
Sonics of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
