The side walls of the mold are designed to be mounted upon the base, above described and the shape of the side walls,'of course, determines the contour of the marker to be produced. Each side wall of the mold includes a portion 18, a portion which is offset and which is indicated by the numeral 19, anda portion 20, the portion 19 extending between and connecting the adjacent ends of the said portions 18 and 20. The portions 19 and 20 have parallel upper and lower edges or, in other words,'are of the same height throughout, but the portion 18 gradu ally increases in height from its end which connects with theportion 19 to its opposite or free end. Also, while the'portions 19 and 20 extend at right angles with respect to each other, the portion 18 extends at an acute angle to the portion 19 so that when p the two sidewalls of the mold are disposed upon the base heretofore described, the wall portions 18 will diverge to a degree corresponding to the degree of divergence of the side edges of the plate 8 upon the upper face of which plate these portions of the side walls rest. The portions 19 of the side walls rest upon the upper edge of the intermediate cross member 1 and the portions 20 of the 7 side walls rest upon the upper faces of the member-s11, 12 and 13 at their ends. In order to prevent relative displacement of the side walls when disposed upon the base of the mold, the plate 8 is provided adjacent its side edges with sockets 21 which receive studs 22 upon the lower edges of the portions 18 of the side walls. One'end wall of the mold is indicated by the numeral 23 and is in the nature of a plate designed to be seated at its side edges in grooves 24., formed in the opposing faces of the'portions 18 of the side walls at their hi her ends. Secured upon the upper edge of the plate 23 com prising one end wall of the mold, is a length i of strap iron 25, the ends of which project beyond the'side edges of the said plate 23 and extend over the upper edges of the portions 18 of the side walls and are provided with down-turned terminals 26 which extend downwardly beside the outer faces of the said portions 18. In this manner the portions 18 are further held against relative that the upper faces of the plates, when ar" 'fdisplacement or separation. The other end ranged within the mold, will be flush withi wall of the mold comprises a body 27 whlch is formed with a recess 28 in one side between its ends. The body 127 is provided upon its under side with studs 29 which are designed to seat in sockets 30 formed in the upper edge of the end member 30f the base of the mold. Secured upon the outer face of the wall member 27 at. each end thereof is a staple or similar element 31 while hingedly connected, as at 32, to the free end of the portion 20 of each" side wall of the mold is a tongue 33' having a slot 34 to receive the staple 31. It will now be understood, and particularly by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, that after the side walls of the mold have been disposed upon the base, as also the end wall 27, the tongue 33 may be swung into engagement with the staples 31 so as to prevent relative displacement of the portions 20 of the two side walls, both with relation to each end and with relation to the end wall 27. In'molding a marker of the form shown in F 1g. 7 of the drawlngs, 1t 1s this may be accomplished there are provided two members designedto constitute extensions of the upper portion of the member 18 of each side wall. Each of these extension members is-indicated by the numeral 35 and is decreased in thicknessfrom one end to the other end and is provided upon its under side at its thicker end with a stud- 36 designed'to seat in a socket 37 formed in.
the respective wall portion 18, the upper edge of the wall portion at the smaller end thereof being recessed, as at 38, to receive the said thicker end of the respective extension member 35. The said member 35 is also formed upon its under side at its other end with a stud 39 designed to seat in a socket 40 formed in the upper side of the endwa'll 27, the sockets 10 being located at the opposite sides of the recess 28.
In preparing the mold the character molding members are suitably arranged upon the base and the mold parts are assembled With the exception of the members 35. The cement mixture is then poured into the mold and stamped and otherwise caused to settle and if desired a thin layer of cement may be dusted on to that portion of the bottom of the mold which is to produce the character bearing face of the marker so that this face, in the finished article, will be smooth and present'a finished appearance. After the cement has been caused to properly settle the members 35 are placed in position and more cement is poured into the space between these members and between Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a mold of the class described, a base, a mold bottom member arranged on part of the base, a wider mold bottom member forming a continuation of the first-mentioned member, side walls removably disposed upon the base and conforming to the outlines of the sides of the said bottom members, the portions of the side Walls which extend above the first-mentioned bottom member being of greater height than the other portions of the side walls, and members constituting extensions of the firstmentioned portions of the said side Walls.
2. In a mold of the class described, a base, a mold bottom member arranged on part of the base, a wider mold bottom member forming a continuation of the first-mentioned member, side walls removably disposed upon the base and conforming to the outlines of the sides of the said bottom members, the portions of the side walls which extend above the first-mentioned bottom member being of greater height than the other portions of the side walls, members constituting extensions of the first-mentioned portions of the said side walls, the said extension members extending over the second-mentioned bottom portion and the upper edges thereof, and the upper edges of the first-mentioned portions of the side Walls being continuously inclined downwardly in the direction of the outer ends of the extensions.
3. In a mold of the class described, a mold wall having a seat provided at its opposite sides with supporting ledges, and below the ledges with shoulders and character molding elements arranged to be selectively disposed upon said seat and each member comprising a character bearing body, and side flanges projecting from the under face of the said body and terminating short of the ends of the body whereby the edges of the body beyond the ends of the flanges may be disposed to rest upon said ledges with the flanges extending between the said shoulders.
