To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHIAS BROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts; have invented certain Improvements in Toe-Lasting Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to lasting machines and has for its object to provide a machine by which the toes of shoes can be lasted rapidly and uniformly and by which the laborious part of the shoe lasting operation is effected by power driven mechanism. 7
In the illustrative machine herein shown as embodying this invention the toe of the shoe is positioned against toe embracing wipers, the machine being free to permit lateral mov emcnt ot' the heel portion of the shoe to locate the toes of right and lett shoes symmetrically with relation to the wipers.
A toe rest assists the operator in presenting the shoe at the right elevation tor the wipers to'engage the side faces of the shoe below the plane of the shoe bottom. A last depressor is arranged for movement; over upon,
the shoe bottom at a predetermined altitude or in a predetermined plane above the wipers and for suh'setpient movement downwardly a fixed distance to bring the shoe bottom into the plane of oven-wiping action of the wipers. Conveniently operated means is provided for adjusting the toe rest to clamp the shoe up against the depressor after the latter has been swung over the'shoe bottom. The depressor with said toc rcstf may be employed, if desired, as the only means for supporting the shoe so that the time required for jacking a shoe in a bed type of toe and heel lasting machine is saved. A spreader or retarder is arranged to clamp the fringe of the upper at the end and corners of the toe down in outspread position upon the wipers. Connected actuating mechanism is provided for these shoe handling parts which operates to hold the upper upon the wipers and to move the l-Jqi'. depressor, accompanied by the toe rest,

downwardly to position the bottom of the shoe in the plane of action of the wipers and to cause the upper at the end and cor ners of the toe tobe tensioned and freed from wrinkles. This actuating mechanism is herein shown as connected with a foot treadle whereby the required movements are obtained in predetermined time relation but under control of the operator who is thus enabled to watch the progress of the work and ascertain that it s done to his satist'action. Power mechanism is provided for operating the wipers and provision is made 7 cluding the broad characteristics as well-as the particular COIHbiIHItlODS of parts and the inore' iinportant details of construction, will he understood in connection with the following description and will then be pointed out in the claims.

pressor, upper spreader and wipers. Obviously these cam faces can be changed to obtain any variation of the movements within the scope of this invention.
The. column 1 supports pivotally on shaft 25 a he d 3 which carries the operating parts of the machine and which can be adjusted about said pivot shaft to different inclinations suited to individual operators who are expected to stand at the right hand end of the machine as indicated by the position of the treadle levers in Fig. 1, a binding bolt l extending through a segmental slot 5 in the. head and securingthe head at the de sired inclination to the horizontal.
The head 3 supports usual lasting wipers or, lasting plates 6 mounted in holders having cam slots as indicated in Fig. 3, which,
sole plate 31 the ends down slightly so that if desired they alone by means of roller-studs in the head, direct ad ancing and closing movements of the wipers when they are pushed forwardly by link connections 10 with aplunger 12.
In a plane below the wipers the toe rest is supported on a lever 16 that is fulcrumed on a pivot pin 18 and rests down by means of an eccentric 20 upon a shoulder 22 of a swinging arm 24 that turns loosely on the shaft 25. The eccentric 20 is fast on a short shaft 26 on which is a hand wheel 28 which furnishes means conveniently operated while the shoe is being jacked and by which the toe rest and the last can be raised to clamp the last upwardly against the last depressor after thelatter has been swung over the shoe bottom, thus providing for variations in the thickness of shoes and for clamping all shoes rigidly orl without'yiclding' pressure. T he stem of the toe rest is threaded for adjustment into a lug in the side of the lever 16. The lower end of swinging arm 24 rests, Figs. 5 and 8,011 a face of the cam plate 470 which includes an incline 21, a dwell and then a reverse incline for imparting a final lift to the toe rest to compress the stock against the wipers while they are over the shoe bottom.
In a plane above the vipers, and in position to clamp the upper bn the wipers, the
' retarder 30 is mounted on a lever 32 pivoted loosely on a shaft and connected at its rear end to a collar 3% that is i'ipheld on a lifting rod 36 by a spring 38. The lower end of this red is pivoted to a lever 42 which is fulcrumed loosely on the shaft 25, said lever resting by a roll on the face 44. of the cam plate The rel. rder 30 is pivotally suspended from the front end of lever and can also turn slightly about a vertical axis to allow its crescent-shaped foot to be positioned for right and left toes. This cam face includes a substantial dwell, Fig. 8, that is operative wl ile the face 4.4, is depressing the retarder; anLmcline 56 that draws the depressor and the last down in company with the toe rest (See incline 21.) but preferably a little faster than the toe rest descends so that the toe is hard clamped between the rest and depressor; a dwell on which the depressor stops for the operation of the wipers; and a reverse incline 57 to letthe depressor rise while the loo rest is lifted (see incline 23) to compress the stock against the wipers while they are over the work.
Two of the wiper cam plate studs 8 are mounted. on blocks which are'engaged by right and left threaded portions of a hand shaft, Fig. 3, that has a hand wheel 9 by which the wipers can be initially closed or opened to lit the particular width of toe that is presented to them.
The wiper plunger 12 is threaded at its rear end into the hub or forwardly projecting stem of a block 51 having a hand wheel which held against endwise displacement by a sleeve having trunnions confined in a lever 57, later to be described. The rear end of this block 51 is formed as a pinion with long teeth engaging a rack bar 58 that rises from a lever 59 fulcrumed on the bolt 4-, Fig.1, and having an end connected by a link to the cam plate 40, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 9. This connection is so shaped 1 that when the plate 40 is turned the block 51 will be rotated and screw the plunger 12 in the d ction to advance the wipers and cause them to continue to embrace an o er-- hangingtoe as the lllrl, is being depressed, or the cam plate might be reversely inclined to cause ovcment for retracting the wipers to caue them to maintain uniform rubbing engagement with a receding toe as the last is being leprcssed.

The wipcrs which will have been set by the hand wheels 9 and 51 to fit and clasp the toe of the shoe below the plane of the shoe bottom will be backed away from and advance'd toward the shoe by the operation of the cam on the lever 59 enough to 'cause them to maintain frictional contact with the upper that is about the overhanging toe of a last as the last is being depressed. The
end portion of the movement of the cam plate 40 which may occur at a second treadling, brings the inclines 57 and 23 opposite their respective rolls, allowing a rise of the depressor and causing a rise of the toe rest to forcethe toe up hard against the wipers to compress the overwipedupper stock upon the feather of the insole.
The wipers are operated to overwi e the upper by power from the cam disk 0 located adjacent to the cam plate 40 on the shaft 45, said cam disk being connected by one to two gearing 71, 72 to the power shaft 25 on which a friction collar 74 is splined to be engaged with the loose, continuously running driving pulley 75. A shipper lever 76 is connected by a rod, Fig. 2, to a treadle -80 for starting and stopping the machine and the power shaft has a hand wheel 78 by which the operator can retard the. power, movement or can realersely turn )the shaft, thus offering complete control of the power operation of the'wipers. The wiper movement is efi'ected from the cam by the angle lever" 57' having a roll at its lower end which stands in a path-in the side oi. cam disk 70. At its upper end this lever has a pin and slot connection with the sleeve 53 that is confined between a shoulder 83 and v a collar 84 on the stem of the block 51 that is adjustable by the threaded connection as already described on the rear end of the wiper operating plunger 12. Movement of the cam disk therefore is transmitted through lever 57" and plunger 12 to push the wipers ahead, and they are caused to close and advance in paths determined by the shape of the usual wiper holder cam slots.
At the right hand side of the machine is a bracket in which a rod 85, Figs. 2, 3 and. 0, has endwise movement outwardly against a return spring 82. In a head- 86 of this rod within the bracketor holder is a slot 87 into which a bight of binding wire can be inserted through an opening leading from the end of the bracket, as shown in Fig. 6, and

having flattened walls adjacent to the head 86 to hold the end and the body strand of the wire whilethe bight of the wire is being rotated by the rod 8:. The outer end of the rod 85 bears a taper roll 88 which is located within the rim of the driving pulley 75. This rim is tapering in cross section as appears in Fig. 6 and the roll 88 normally stands by the action of-the spring just out of touch with the pulley but can be moved into driving contact therewith by a slight endwise pressure on the rod effected through the bight of the wire. \Vhen the roll and rod are rotated by such contact the bight of thewire is twisted around the strand of the wire" that is confined between the fiat- =tened walls of the'opcning in the bracket and a loop is formed in the wire, see Fig. 7 which is adapted to engage over an anchor tack at the right hand side of the shoe. A leaf spring 89 is arranged to engage a flat side oflthe head 86 to stop the head with the loop in alinement with the bracket slot so that the loop can be readily withdrawn from the head 86. A flaring mouth permits the bight of wire to be readily thrust into position to be twisted.
The wipers 6 are split, recessed or grooved as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in edge view in Fig. 1 to adapt them to receive and to guide into proper relation to the overworked'upper a binding wire. It is contemplated that the portion of the wire which is to constitute the binder will be placed in the wipers before the shoe is presented to the machine or when that is done and the free end of the strand will be anchored to the right hand side of the toe by the loop above described or otherwise before the wipers'are operated and that the wipers will then carry the wire over the shoe toward binding position. The wire is led from the usual tension device up through an eye in the end of the slide 90. After the wipers have advanced to work the upper into lasted position, the slide is actuated forwardly by a bell crank lever 92 and rod 91 connected with the wiring trcadlc 95. By this means the wire is tightened around the toe mechanically while the wipers continue to hold the upper hard clampetl in lasted position. The wiper actuating cam track in the cam disk 70, is formed to hold the wipers over the shoe during the major part of the cycle of the cam. This provides a dwell in the automatically eflectcd wiper movement dur ing which the wiper holds the upper and during which the operator may, without stopping the machine it he be skilful. actuate the'tightcning slide to draw the wire from the groove in the wipers into binding relation to the upper before the wipers are retracted. Obviously a hand lever might be substituted for the treadle 95 or the wire tightening slide may be connectcdto the power mechanism to he advancedin time relation therewith. if the split or recessed form of wipers is not employed, the binding wire may be passed under the wipers in front of the toe and anchored at the right hand side of the shoe as described either before or. after the shoe is clamped in the machine and the wire tightening slide 90 may be operated as above described for drawing the wire between the lower face of the wipers and the upper into binding engagement with the upper at the inner edge of the wipers. In order to permit the wire to be thus drawn into place, the pressure on the treadle will berelaxed to allow the cam plate 40 to turn in the direction to let thcswinging arm 24, Fig. 9, drop down the incline 28 and thereby relax the upward pressure of the toe rest upon the last.
The last depressor 50 can be turned upon its rod 52 to position the shoe engaging end of the depressor over the toe rest if desired and when. this is done the toe portion of the shoe will be clamped with sutiicient rigidity to hold the shoe for the toe lasting operation without the use of any heel support. A heel support isherein illustrated which may be employed if desired. This comprises an open frame having side bars 100, Fig. 3. which are pivoted to the head 3 at 101 and at their front ends bear upwardly against eccentrics 102 fast on the pivot shaft 35 and adapted to be adjusted by the hand wheel 105 to position vertically the heel portion of the shoe. The rear end portions of the bars 100 are toothed on their lower faces and are embraced by sliding boxes 106 which can be adjusted along the bars by pinions on a shaft 108 as shown in Fig. 4. The shaft has a crank 110 for turning it while the ratchet and pawl 112 lock it against backward movement. In F i g. 1 a sliding'pawl 109 is shown in place of the pinions etc. for locking the boxes in adjusted position on the bars. The boxes are connected by an end rail 115 which is curved, as herein shown, around a center that is located about at the point of intersection. of the median line of the fo'repart and the heel part of the crooked last illustrated in Fig. 3. A block 116 depends from the rail 115 and is free to be adjusted laterally, on the rail. The front face of this block has a heel abutment 118 for the rear end face of the shoe. By this connectionthe spindle and the last pin may be adjusted toward and from the last end abutment 118 for differout sizes of last and, if desired, the last pin and the last might be turned backwardly to clamp the last against the abutment, but such a use is not contemplated in the. pres ent machine. Under some conditions the s0 heel post and last pin may be omittedfland' the end abutment 118 only used to stea'dythe heel end of the last while the toe/is being lasted.
In the use of the machine'a shoe with the too ready to be lasted is positioned, with or without spindling it upon the last pin as may be preferred, at the desired height upon the toe rest 15 with the end of the toe against the wipers. The wipers engage the shoe below the plane of the shoe bottom and 'they will be adjusted by the hand wheels 01 and 9 as required for the size and width of the shoe that is being lasted, and will be caused to embrace the toe 'portion of the shoe. The last depressor will then be swung into position, and the rest raised by operation of the hand wheel 28. The, fringe of the upper is spread out by the operator over the top face of the wipers 100.

The first movement effected by the cam plate 40 when the treadle is depressed is to clamp the rctarder firmly down upon the fringe of the upper to hold the upper upon the wipers and cause it to be stretched about the end and corners of the toe when the last is depressed. Following the clamping of the upper, the cam surface 21 permits the toe rest to descend while the cam surface 56 pulls down the last depressor whereby the last is drawn downwardly until the face of the innersole is substantially in the plane of action of the wipers. The positionv to which the depressor lowers the last is controlled by adjustment of the thrcadedend of the rod 52 in the lever 54 and the portion of the cam 12 face 56 which is active during the last part of the movement of tl'ic'treadlc 65 is concentric so that the position to which the shoe is depressed with relation to th ej wipers is predetermined. This position" is'; just 10W p the power shaft started enough. in practice, to allow the wipers to wipe the. upper over the feather of the shoe insole with a hard rubbing movement. If the last has an overhanging toe, that is, if the end face of the toe projects forwardly beyonril the cc gc line of the shoe bottom, then the rack bar on and lever 59 will be employed and during the depression of the last and the consequent stretching of the upper the wipers be slightly advanced and closed, to maintain frictional engagement against the end face of the overhanging toe of the ast. If, upon examination of the work after the upper has been ovcrwiped it should be discovered that the wipers require to be backed off or advanced are or less, this can be done by the use of the hand wheels 78, 51 and 9 or repeated by power.

the. wire is to be drawn into binding position under the Wipers, instead of from a recess in the wipers as above described, by the binder tightening slide 90 the pressure on the treadle 65 will preferably be relaxed to allow the toe rest and the shoe to descend for permitting the wire to slip under tension into holding position. Return of the pressure on the treadle 65 will then cause the upper to be clamped under tension again so that the binder can be out ofl from the strand'of wire and be anchored to a tack on the left hand side of the shoe. During the last portion of the power operation of the wipers, if the operation is continuous or when the machine is restarted by depressing the treadlc 80 if the machine has been stopped with the wipers over the toe,-the wipers will be returned to their starting positions and release of the treadle 65 will permit the return spring 67 to turn the cam plate 40 backwardly for releasing the lasted shoe and leave the machine ready for operat ion upon another shoe.

A toe lasting machine having in combination, toe embracing wipers, a retarder to grip-the upper on the wipers, upper and lower members to clamp the toe, and two for the action of the wipers.
2. A toe lasting machine having in combination, toe embracing wipers, automatically operating mechanism therefor, a retarder to clamp the upper on the wipers, upper and lower toe clamps, and one con nected mechanism separate from the automatic mechanism for actuating the retarder and the upper and lower toe clamps to prepare, position and hold the shoe for the action of the wipers.
3. A toe lasting machine having in com bination, toe embracing wipers, a toe rest normally positioned to rest the shoe for en gagement with the wipers below the plane of the shoe bottom, a retarder to clamp the upper upon the top face of the wipers, a last depressor occupying normally an out of the way position and movable into engagement with the shoe bottom, and actuating mechanism including means to impart always to the depressor a predetermined length of movement to force the last downwardly into a predetermined relation of the shoe bottom to the plane of action of the wipers.
4. A toe lasting machine having in combination, toe embracing wipers adapted to' embrace the toe below the plane of the last bottom, guiding means holding the wipers for movement in a single plane only, a re tarder to clamp the fringe of the upper upon the wipers, a last depressor occupying normally a position to facilitate the pre sentation of the shoe; and operating mocha nisms for said parts including means for predcteruiining the plane, relatively to the plane or action of the wipers, to which the de 'n'essor will move the last downwardly.

A toe lasting machine having in combination, a toe rest, wipers, a retarder, a last depressor, and a manual and an automatic set of actuating mechanisms one of which is connected with said retarder, toe rest and depressor to effect their operation and the other of whichis connected with the wipers.
