SIDE FRAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SLICK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, (whose post-oflice address is Johnstown, Pennsylvania,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Frames; and I do hereby declare-the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a side frame adapted for use as a part of a railway car truck and especially in connection with the I make my side frame of wrought or. rolled steel which provides a material best adapted to withstand the loads and impacts to which it is subjected in service, and this material, by its method of manufacture, inspection and tests,
can be made solid and integral throughout every portion, and the different parts may be of any quality or strength desired so that each is best adapted to withstand the stresses towhich it will be subjected.
I also prefer to secure the parts together by means of either hot or cold driven rivets of large size, firmly upset and expanded into smooth holes which may be reamed or drilled to cause their surfaces to be of uniform size and smoothness throughout.
My truck is generally composed of three principal members, one of which is the lower arch bar member which is bent into the gen eral form of an extended V with a horizontal lower portion, inclined side portions extending diagonally to the upper parts, and approximately horizontal end portions which are adapted to rest upon and be secured to the journal boxes. Secured to the lower arch bar at the. end portions thereof is the upper arch bar which may be either straight or cambered, and between these two portions I provide a U-shape member, the lower part of which is secured to the lower intermediate portions of the lower arch bar and the upper ends of which are secured to the upper arch bar, thereby providing a very strong and eflicient brace and a bolster opening adapted to receive the springs and the end of the bolster.
I also provide bolster guides which are secured to the inner'faces of the last mentioned U-shaped member. I prefer to make all of these members of approximately U Specification of Letters Patent.

or channel shape cross section comprising a flat plate portion connecting the two sides or webs which webs project substantially at right angles therefrom and a flange projecting outwardly at the edge of each web portion. The bars from which these members are constructed may be rolled in a rolling mill or they may be pressed into form by a press, hammer or other suitable means. In order to make a strong and rigid connection, which will also occupy a comparatively small space, Iprefer to nest the ends of the upper member within the ends of the lower member in such a way that the outside portions of the webs of the upper member are contiguous to the inside surfaces of the webs of the lower member and with their flange portions contiguous. These are then secured together by means of rivets passing through the adjacent web and flange portions. Similarly I prefer to nest the channel shape lower portion of the U-shaped central member within the intermediate portion of the lower arch bar member so that their webs are contiguous and the flanges of the lower part of the central member rest upon and are secured to the flanges of the lower member. The upper portions of the central member are contiguous and secured to the webs of the upper arch bar member by means of rivets passing through the adjacent portions and in order to make a stronger construction, I flatten out the flange portions and the bottom connecting plate portions of the central member at the ends thereof, thereby providing amplespace and section for securing its ends to the upper member by means of rivets passing through the same.
I I also provide the usual spring-seats, spring plank, pedestal tie-bars, bolster guides and bolts for connecting and securing the end portions of my side frame to the journal boxes. I also provide a brake hanger support which is secured to the side frame.
Having thus given a general description of my invention, I will now, in order to make the matter more clear, refer to the annexed sheet of drawings which forms a part of this specification and in which like characters denote like parts Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railway car truck, provided with a side frame embodyin my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the side frame; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional elevation taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a sectional elevation taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line VV of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the characters of reference on the drawings :-1 is the upper arch bar shown as of channel section with outstanding flanges 5 at its upper portion and slightly cambered, as shown. The end por tions of the upper arch bar are nested within the corresponding end portions 4: of the lower arch bar 2 and the end portions of the upper flanges of same rest upon the end portions of the flanges 6 of the lower arch bar, as illustrated, and the flanges and webs are secured together by rivet-s, as shown. The lower arch bar is provided with upwardly inclined portions 3, the journal boxes are 7 and the truck column or central memher is 8, this truck column being also of channel section with a bottom plate, two side webs and outwardly projecting flanges at the edges of the webs. This member, as shown, is of U-shape in general form, the lower portion is nested and fits within the lower portion of the lower arch bar 2 and is secured thereto by rivets, as shown, while the upper portion is provided with flattened portions 9, composed of the web portion, the terminal flange portion and part of the connecting plate portions which have been flattened in such a way as to fit closely to the web portions of the upper member and are secured thereto by means of rivets, as shown. The outwardly projecting flange of the truck column or central member is indicated as 10, while 11 and 12 are holes provided in the ends of the arch bars to receive the journal box bolts 13 and 14 for securing them to the side frame. Near the lower external corner of the central member or truck column 8, I provide openings 15 which are adapted to allow a rivet to be passed there-through for securing the end of the pedestal tie-bar 23 to the lower member, as illustrated. In order that the upper end of the truck column may be flattened to fit against the sides of the web of the upper member, I split or divide the flat plate portion for a short distance from its end, as illustrated at 16. The sprin plank which is shown as of channel form, is 17, which is secured to the side frame, as shown, and extends from one side frame to the companion frame on the other side of the car, in order to hold these together and maintain them square and in line. Ihe bolster guides are indicated generally as 19,
provided with flanges 18 by which they are secured to the flanges 10 of the column guide by means of rivets, as shown, those rivets being preferably countersunk on the inner side so as to provide a smooth surface that will not interfere with the movement of the bolster. The bolster springs are 20, the bolster 21 and the brake hanger carriers are 22.
Although I have shown the upper arch bar member of channel form with outstandof channel form with the webs projecting downwardly instead of upwardly, or I may make it of hollow-box, I-beam or other sec--- tion as desired. 7
Although I have described and illustrated my invention in considerable detail, I do not wish to be limited to the exact and specific details thereof as shown and described, but may use such modifications in, substitutions for, or equivalents thereof, as are embraced within the scope of my invention, or as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is i 1. A side frame comprising an upper arch bar and a lower arch bar, both of channel section with integral outwardly extending flanges, the ends of one member being of less depth than and nested within the ends of the other and secured together by their contiguous portions.
2. A side frame comprising an upper arch bar and a lower deeper arch bar, both of channel section with integral outwardly extending flanges, spaced apart at their intermediate portions, the upper one being fitted or nested within the other at their end portions and there secured together by means passing through theirwebs and flanges.
3. A side frame comprising an upper arch bar and a lower deeper arch bar, both of channel section with webs and integral out wardly projecting flanges, spaced apart at the center, the upper one being fitted or.
nested within the other at their end portions and there secured together by means passing through their contiguous web and flange portions.
A side frame comprising an upper arch bar and a lower deeperarch bar, both of channel section with integral outwardly projecting flanges on the edges of the web portions thereof, the end portions of the webs and flanges being contiguous and secured directly together.
5. A side frame comprising a lower arch bar of channel section comprising a pair of upwardly projecting webs spaced apart and provided with integral outwardly projecting flanges on the edges thereof, an upper arch bar of smaller and shallowerbut similar section, the ends of said upper arch bar being nested within the other and secured together by means of their contiguous flanges and webs, their central portions being spaced apart and so secured by a brace member se cured to both.
6. A side frame comprising a lower arch bar member of channel section, comprising a connecting plate portion, two web portions projecting substantially at right anios gles therefrom, integral flange portions projecting outwardly from the edges of the web portions; an upper arch bar member of similar but smaller section, theends of said members being nested one within the other and secured together by their contiguous portions, and spaced apart at their central portion; a truck column member of similar cross section and formed in a general U- shape inserted between the central portions of said members and secured to both.
7 A side frame comprising a bottom arch bar member of channel section provided with a pair of integral outwardly projecting flanges; an upper arch bar of similar section, the ends of said members being secured together by means of their contiguous portions; a truck column member of similar section and of general U-form with a substantially lower horizontal portion and two integral outwardly projecting flange portions, its lower part being nested Within the lower arch bar member with its webs and flanges contacting with the webs and flanges of said lower member, the upper portions of said truck column member being arranged to overlap the sides of the upper arch bar and means for securing the same together.
8. A side frame comprising a lower member of channel section with a pair of integral outwardly extending flanges, formed in the shape of an extended V, but with a substantially horizontal lower portion; two upwardly and outwardly inclined side portions and substantially horizontal end portions an upper arch bar of similar section but of less depth, the ends of which are nested within and secured to the end portions of the lower member by means of their contiguous web and flange portions, the integral outwardly projecting flanges on the intermediate portions of the lower member forming a support for a spring seat.
9. A side frame comprising a lower member and an'upper member, both of channel section, with a pair of integral outwardly extending flanges, the ends of said members being nested one within the other and secured together by their contiguous portions, said members being spaced apart at their intermediate portions; a column guide of similar section with a longitudinally extending lower portion and upwardly extending side portions, the lower portion being nested within the intermediate portion of the lower member and secured thereto, the upper portions of said column guide being flattened and adapted to overlap the side portions of the upper member and secured thereto. 7

A side frame comprising a lower arch bar of channel section with a pair of integral outwardly projecting flanges, a longitudinally extending lower portion, side portions extending inclined upwardly and outwardly therefrom with substantially horizontal end portions; an upper arch bar of similar channel section with outwardly extending flanges, the ends of which are nested Within the ends of the lower arch bar and secured thereto by means passing through their contiguous portions; the outwardly projecting integral flanges on the sides of the lower portion of said lower arch bar being adapted to form a support for a spring seat; a column guide of channel section with outwardly extending flanges bent around three sides of a rectangle, the lower portion of which is nested within and conforms to the shape of the intermediate portion of the lower arch bar, the 11 per portions of said column uide being flattened and overlapping the flanges of the upper member and means for securing the same together.

In a side frame of the character described, a column guide member of channel section with a pair of integral outwardly extending flanges, the whole being made of general U-shape with a horizontal lower portion, upwardly extending side portions, the upper ends of which are flattened and adapted to overlap the sides of the upper arch bar and secured thereto.
12. In a side frame of the character described, a column guide comprising a channel section provided with a bottom plate connecting portion, two side portions or webs and a pair of integral outwardly projecting flanges, formed in the general shape of a U with a longitudinally extending lower portion, upwardly extending side portions, the webs of which project inwardly toward each other and means for securing the same to the lower and upper members by means passing through their contiguous portions.
13. In a side frame of the character described, a column guide of channel section having integral bottom and web portions and marginal outwardly extending flanges,
a bolster guide formed of similar shape and secured to the outwardly extending flanges of said column guide, the inwardly projecting portion of the same being adapted to serve as a bolster guide.
14. A side frame comprising a top member and a bottom member of greater depth each of channel section provided with a pair of 'integral outwardly extending flanges said members being spaced apart at their center and adjacent at their end portions, the ends of both members being nested and secured together by means of their contiguous web and flange portions, and means passing through said members adapted to secure the same on the journal boxes.
15. A side frame comprising top and bottom members of channel section with a pair of integral outwardly projecting flanges spaced apart at the center, one nested within the other at their end portions and secured together by means passing through their contiguous portions, the ends of both members being secured on the upper portions of the journal box, said members being connected together at their intermediate portions by a member of similar section formed in U-shape, the lower part of which is nested within and secured to the intermediate portion of the bottom member, the
upper ends of which are flattened and se-' cured to the top member.
16. A side frame comprising an upper arch bar and a lower arch bar and a truck column member, all of channel section, with a pair of outwardly projecting flanges spaced apart at their intermediate portions, one nested within the other at the ends and there secured together by their contiguous portions, the column member being generally of U-shape and secured to the bottom and top members by means passing through the adjacent parts.
