:Be it known that I, ALICE KoMRosKY a .citizen of the United States, residing at Valley City, Ain the county -of Barnes `and State of North Dakota, have invented ,certain new and useful Improvements in Mail- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to theclass of deposit and collection receptacles and more particularly to amail receptacle having an improved cover, and asignal associated therewith. I have also provided a shelf which may be used by persons desiring to address mail at the receptacle. l

The invention has for one of its principal objects the provision of a mail box which is simple in construction `and durable, Aand cheap to manufacture. V l

With the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combinationand arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specication as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 isan end elevation of a mail box embodying improvements of my invention,

In the drawing, wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated I have shown a receptacle 1 having a rear wall 2, curved top wall 3, provided with an opening 4 and a bottom wall 5. End walls 6 and 7 are also provided.

I have provided a suitable closure for the opening 4 embodying an elongated arcuate plate '8 carried on arms 9 pivoted at 10 to the end walls of the receptacle 1.

As shown to advantage in Fig. 2, a partition 11 is provided in the interior of said receptacle, thereby a'ording different sized compartments. A suitable receptacle 12 is carried on the wall 11 in which coin or curthereon.

I have provided an improved signal, said signal including an arm 15 pivoted at 1'6 to the end wall 7, said arm having a right angularly extending portion 17 formed The arm 17 is receivable and adapted for movement under a spring strip 18 fastened adjacent its alined, opposite extremities 19 to the end wall 7. The spring strip 18 is shown to advantage in Fig. 5 and it will be noted that said strip is formed with two off-set portions 20 adjacent its opposite extremities, said off-set portions being adapted to receive and retain the arm l5 at the end of each movement thereof. An enlarged portion 21 is carried by the arm 15 and serves as a signal.

One of the end-walls, preferably the end wall 6, is provided with an elongated opening 22 in which letters or small mail matter may be deposited. A closure 23 is provided said closure being pivoted at 24 and adapted to be swung over said opening 22. A stop 25 is provided for said closure.

I have also provided a shelf capable for use to direct letters and the like at the mail box, said shelf being designated 26, slidably mounted in guides 27 and having' the inner extremity 28' thereof provided with a stop to prevent its entire withdrawal.

A handle 29 `is'mounted on the outer free extremity of said shelf for an obvious purose. v

p Attentionlis directed to the peculiar arrangement of the mail box, the receiving of large and small mail matter being facilitated by the provision of large and small compartments.

It is, of course, to be understood that while a specific structure has been described and shown, I do not desire to be limited to this structure and reserve the right to make changes which are within scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support, a resilient retaining strip comprising a central depressed portion having` end extremities in alinement therewith, said end extremities being mounted upon said support, olf-set feet portions formed upon said strip and being separated by the central depressed portion thereof, said feet portions extending outwardly beyond the plane of the central depressed portions and the alined end extremities, a movable armmounted upon said support and projecting between said strip and said support, said arm being adapted to normally fit within one of said portions, thus holding the arm in a set position, said arm beingrcapable of being swung to the remaining portion by the outward swinging movement of the central depressed portion `of the retaining strip, and the end extremities of said strip preventing thc displacement of said arm.

2. in a device of the class described, the combination of a mail box, a signal having a straight arm depending therefrom and terminating in a projection extending at right angles thereto, means passing through the junction of the arm and the angular projection thereof for pivotally supporting said arm upon a mail box, a resilient retaining strip comprising a central depressed portion having extremities in alinement therewith, thus forming orf-set retaining feet, formed out of alinement with said portion and the extremities, said extremities being ixedly mounted on said mailbox, the angular projection of said arm projecting between said strip and said mail box, said angular projection being adapted to normally fit within one of the feet, thus holding the signal and arm in a set position, said projection being adapted to be swung for swinging said signal and arm, thus causing the central depressed portion of the strip to be swung outwardly for accommodating the movement of the angular projection, and the secured extremities of said strip holding said angular projection and said signal arm against displacement.
