CENTRIFUGAL GOVERNOR.

Be it known that I, HARRY FERDINAND LnrssNnR, a citizen of the Kingdom ,of Sweden, residing at Ljusne, Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improved Centrifugal Governor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention being a division of my copending patent application Serial Number 106,722 relates to centrifugal governors and more particularly to centrifugal governors adapted for use in combination with speed regulating devices, in which an adjustment of the centrifugal governor for various speeds, while working, is desired.
Various constructions have been proposed in order to bring about such a centrifugal governor. In certain cases the centrifugal governor has been provided with a loading spring which is compressed more or less according to the speed desired. The intermediate members necessary for the transmission of power from said spring to the fly- Iballs, have, however, rendered the construction of the governor too complicated, and owing thereto the use of such centrifugal governors as well as of such regulating devices is rather limited.
The object of this invention is the provision of a centrifugal governor adapted to work for two or more different ranges of speed without necessitating the use of any regulating means.
With this object in view the centrifugal governor is provided with a spring load consisting of two or more springs of different strength, each of said springs operating within its separate range of speed.
A preferred embodiment of a centrifugal governor constructed according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a diagrammatic representation of a centrifugal governor provided. with springs of thel above named kind and of the connections between the governor and the member-to be controlled. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a spring device actuating the fly-balls of the governor and having two springs.

Referring to Fig. 2 the spring load of the governorcomprises a helical spring l provided at the one end with a hook 2, by means of which the spring may be attached to one fly-ball 12 of a centrifugal governor. At the other end the spring 1 is screwed onto a cylindrical member 3 having outer threads at the one end and formed at the other end as a sleeve 4 closed by a cover 5. Placed in the center of the cover 5 the end of the hook 2 is generally inserted. On account thereof, the tension of the spring 1 may be adjusted by turning the member 3 in relation'to the spring. Located inside the sleeve 4 is another spring Gof less strength than the spring 1 and I"bearing, at the one end, against the bottom of the sleeve 4 and, at the other end, against a nut 7 formed as a piston and adapted tomove in the sleeve 4. Screwed into the nut 7 is a rod 8, which may be connected with the governor sleeve 13 movable along the governor shaft 13. The nut 7 is provided with a pin 9 secured to the same and entering a longitudinal slot 10 in the sleeve 4, so that the nut is prevented from turning, but is able to move in the sleeve on turning the rod 8. Secured between the bottom of the sleeve 4 and the nut 7 is a tube 11 surrounding the rod 8 and serving to limit the compression of the spring 6. The length of the tube 11 in relation to the strength of the springs l and 6 is so chosen, that on pulling, at the one side, at the hook 2 and, at the otherside, at the rod 8 the spring 1 cannot be extended, ere the nut 7 bears against the tube 11.
As will appear from Fig. 1, such a spring device is provided between each ily ball 12 and the movable governor sleeve 13. .By turning the member 3 of each spring device the tension of the corresponding spring 1- is so adjusted, that it corresponds to a maximal speed desired of the machine in question and by screwing the rod 8 outward or inward the tension of the spring 6 is so adjusted, that it corresponds to the minimal machine.

position of the valve is'` indicated byL the line B. The path of movement of the valve is indicated by the vertical line C. The link 15 is at the center connected with a hand lever 17 pivotally mounted on the stationary `shaft 18. In Fig. l. three different positions of the fly-balls and of the-hand lever are shown.- Said positions are indicated by I, II and III. Concerning they-balls, I designates their lowest position, IIvtheir highest` position at the minimal speed of the machine, and III their highest position at the maximal speed of the machine. As to the hand lever 17, the position I corresponds to the stop position of the machine, the position 4II corresponds to the running of the machine at the lowest speed, and III to its running at the highest speed.
The device operates as follows: When the hand lever 17 is in the stop position I, the link-system lll-*16 occupies the position designated by I, the iy-balls are in their lowest position I, and the supply valve is in its -closed position B. If the `hand lever be pressed. At the same time the link-system lll-16 is turned around the center (II) of the link 15 in such a manner, that the supply valve closes successively, according as the fly-balls are raised. When the Hy-balls reach the position II, the linksystem occupies the position IIb in which the supply valve is closed." 'Ihus the supply may vary between a quite open and a closed position, while the fly-balls are moving between the positions I and II. In^the position II of the flyballs the spring 6 is compressed to such an extent, that the nut 7 bears against the tube 11. -Y
If the greater speedis to be used, the hand lever 17 is reversed to the position III. At the beginning the fly-balls cannot pass the position II, and therefore the link-system occupies, after the reversal, the position III, in which the supply valve is quite open.

If the speed be further increased and the y-balls begin to rise while extending the spring 1, the supply valve will be throttled successively, since the link-system 14-16 is turned about the center (III) -of' the link 15. When the fly-balls 12 reach the highest position III, the link-system 14-16 occupies the position IIIb in which the supply valve is closed entirely. Thus the supply may vary between the fully open and the closed position, while the fly-balls are'moving between the positions II and III.
Obviously, the number' of springs operating consecutively .may be chosen at' willl greater than two in correspondence to the number of different speeds of the machine for which the governor'is to be adjusted. The dierent springs need not be placed one inslde another, as in the drawing, but may be located on a line or beside another, though the disposal described above, as saving room, is to be preferred.
l Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A centrifugal governor havinga spring load comprising a number of helical springs of different strength, means for securing the s'prings'between the ily balls and the sleeve of the governor, andl means whereby a weaker spring is set outof action before a stronger spring is brought in action.
2. A centrifugal governor, having a spring load comprising two helical 'springs of different strength disposed one inside the other, means for securing the( springs between the fly balls and the sleeve of the governor and means whereby the weaker spring is set out of action before the-Astronge'r spring is brought in action. f
3. A centrifugal governor having a spring load comprising a number of helical springs of :lierent strength, means for securing the springs between they balls and the sleeve of the governor, means for adjusting .the tension of the springs, and means whereby a weaker spring'is set out of action before a stronger spring is brought in action.
4. A centrifugal governor having a sprin load comprising a sleeve and two helica springs 'of dierent strength disposed inside and outside of said sleeve respectively, means for connecting the outer s ring to the vy-ball of the governor, a mova 1e member vwithin said sleeve adapted to compress the said inner spring and connected to the sleeve of the governor, and means within said first-mentioned sleeve whereby the said inner spring is set out of action when compressed to a certain extent.
5. A centrifugal governor having a spring load comprising a strong ,helical spring lformed with a hook at one end thereof engaging the Hy' ball of the4 governor, a sleeve lll5 ist
