To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY FERDINAND LEISSNER, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Ljusne, Sweden, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Spring Devices, of which the'following is This invention relates tospeed regulating devices and more particularly to regulating devices operating by the aid of a centrifugal governor adapted to be adjusted for various speeds, while working i Various constructions have been proposed in order to bring about such a regulatin device. In certain cases a spring loade centrifugal governor has been used, the spring of which is compressed more or less according to the speed desired. The intermediate members necessary for the transmission of power from said spring to the flyballs have, however, rendered the construction ofthe governor too complicated, and owing thereto the use of such regulating devices is rather limited.
An object of this invention is the provision of a regulating devicefoperating by means of a centrifugal governor which is provided with a simple device adapted to be applied to common governors without necessitating any change 'of their mechanism and to effect the adjustment of the regulating device for'various speeds, While working.
Another object is to provide a regulating device of the above stated type having a spring member consisting of two or more springs of different strength, each of said springs operating within its separate range of speed; j
A preferred embodiment of a regulating device constructed according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure'l is a diagrammatic representation of the centrifugal governor provided with springs of the above. named kind and of the connections between the governor and the member to be controlled. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a spring device actuating the fly-balls of the governor and having two springs.
Referring to Fig.2, the spring devicecomprises a helical spring 1 provided at the'one end with a hook 2, by means of which the spring may be attached to one fly-ball 12 of a centrifugal governor. At the other "grammatically in Fig. 1-
end'the-spring 1 is screwed onto a cylindrical member 3 having outer threads at the one end and formed at the other end as a sleeve 4 closed by, a cover 5. Placed in the centerof'the cover 5 is a recess into which the end. of the hook 2 is generally inserted.
'On account thereof, the tension of the spring linay be adjusted by turning the member 3 in relation to the spring. Located inside the sleeves is another spring 6 of less strength than the spring 1 and hearing, at
the one end, against the bottom of the sleeve 4.- and, at the other end, against a nut 7 formed as a piston and adapted to move in j the sleeve 4:. Screwed into the nut 7 is a rod 8, which may be connected with the governor sleeve 13 movable along the governor shaft 13; The nut 77 is provided with a pin 9 secured to the same and entering a longitudinal slot 10 in the sleeve 4, so that the nut is prevented from turning, but is able to move in the sleeve on turning the rod 8. Secured between the bottom of the sleeve 4 and the nut 7 is a tube'll surrounding the rod 8 and serving to limit the compression of the spring 6. lhe length of the tube 11 in relation to the strength of the springs 1 and 6 is so chosen,-that on pulling, at the one side, at the hook 2 and, at the other side, at the rod 8 the spring 1 cannot be exturning the member 3 of each spring device the tension of the corresponding spring 1 is so adjusted, that it corresponds to the maximal speed desired of the machine in question and by screwing the rod 8 outward or'inward the tension of the spring 6 is so adjusted, that it corresponds to the minimal speed desired of the machine.
The connection between the governor and the member to be controlled may for instance, be effected in the manner shown diasleeve 13 is by means of links 14, 15, 16 connected with said member. In the present case this member is supposed to be a main supply valve the quite closed position of which is indicated by the line A, while the quite open position of the valve is indicated by the line B. a hand lever 17 pivotally mounted on the stationary shaft 18. In Fig. 1 three difierent positions of the fiy-balls and of the hand lever are shown. Said positions are indicated by I, II, and III. Concerning the flyballs, I designates their lowest position, II their highest position at the minimal speed of the machine, and III their highest lowest position I, and the supply valve is in its closed position 13. If' the hand lever be moved to the position II, this will have no influence on the fly-balls, and therefore the link 14: will remain in its position I, whereas the links 15 and 16 are moved to the position II". Owing thereto, the valve is fully opened, and the machine is started. According as the speed increases, the flyballs 12 are raised, while the spring 6 is compressed. At the same time the link-system 14-16 is turned around the center II of the link 15 in such a manner, that the supply valve closes successively, according as the fly-balls are raised. Then the flylink-system occupies the position II in which the supply valve is closed. Thus the supply may vary between a quite open and a closed position, while the fly-balls are moving between the positions I and II. V In the position II of the fly-balls the spring Bis compressed to such an extent, that the nut 7 bears against the tube 11.
If the greater speed is to be used, the hand lever 17 is reversed to the position III. At the beginning the fiy-balls cannot pass the position 11, and therefore the link-system occupies, after the reversal, the position III, in which the supply valve is quite open. This position is maintained, until the speed of the machine is increased to such an extent, that the tension of the spring 1 is exceeded by the fly-balls. If the speed be further increased and the fly-balls begin to raise while extending the spring 1, the supflepiea of this patent maybe obtained for ply valve will be throttled successively, since the link-system 14-16 is turned about the center III of the link 15. 'When the fly-balls ing consecutively may be chosen at willj greater than two in correspondence to the number of different speeds of the machine for which the governor is to be adjusted: The difierent springs need not be'placed one inside another, as in thepdrawing, but may be located on a line or beside another, though the disposaldescribed above,as saving room,is to be preferred.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
l. A spring device comprising an outer sleeve, an exterior spring secured on said sleeve and adapted for connection with an element to be regulated, a sleeve in the firstnamed sleeve and held against endwise move ment, a rod extending through the last-named sleeve and the end of the first-named sleeve and adapted for connection with a governor, means on said rod to bring up against the last-named sleeve, and a spring surrounding said sleeve and interposed between said means and the end of the first-named sleeve.
2. A spring device comprising a sleeve exteriorly grooved adjacent to one end, a coiled spring surrounding said sleeve and having whirls adjacent to one end seated in said groove and adapted at its oppositeend for connection with a member to be regulated, a rod movable in the sleeve and adapt- HARRY FERDINAND LEISSNEB.
