BRACELET-WATCH ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern.-
I Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and 'State of Massachusetts, have invented certain useful Improvements in Bracelet-Watch Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as bracelet watches, and more particularly relates to an improved invisible bracelet attachment for watches.
As the primary aim and object, the present invention contemplates the provision of novel cooperative means on a watch and on one end of a bracelet whereby the watch and bracelet may be firmly and removably secured to each other in such a manner as to obviate the use of outwardly projecting clasps, etc.,on the watch, the means thereon being practically invisible so that the watchmay be used in the ordinary manner if it is so desired.
' g It is an additional and equally important object of this invention to provide resilient means positioned within the watch casing for returning a portion of the casing to close the opening which receives the engaging means on the bracelet so that when the latter is removed a smooth surface will be presented at this portion of the casing.
More particularly, the present invention .includes the provision of an improved link for slidably receiving the lock casing, cooperative means beingprovided on the lock casing in engagement with the link whereby thelock casing is held within the link to consequently prevent the accidental disengagement of the catch means, in the lock casing, from the Watch casing. a
It is a more specific object of the present invention to provide improved catch means in the lock casing, and to also provide novel means for manually actuating the catch means to'permit the engagement and disengagement thereof.
Among other aims and objects of the present invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a View to compactness, in which the number Specification of Letters Patent.

of parts are few, the construction simple, the izlosth of production low and the efficiency Other objects, as well as the nature, characteristic features, and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent in the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section of the connection between the watch and bracelet, in a closed or fastened position;

Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of one of the catches. a Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a watch of any conventional construction and including generally a casing 1 and a winding stem 2, about which is connected a loop 3. A bracelet 4 composed of a plurality of links 5 has one end link connected to the loop 3. A portion of the casing,"preferably of a disk-like form, 6 is struck in to provide a correspondingly shaped opening 7 at a point approximately diametrically opposite the stem 2, while a leaf spring 8 has its intermediate portion connected to the inner surfaceofthe disk 6 and its respective ends rigidly connected to the inner surface of the casing in spaced relation to opposite sides of the opening 7, as indicated by the numeral 9.- This spring normally serves to hold the disk 6 in the opening 7 so that the outer surface is substantially flush with the in the opening 7 so as to consequently support the watch on the wrist of the wearer the open outer link 10 on the opposite end of the bracelet is in the present instance desirably of tubular form and is constructed to slidably receive the open tubular lock casing 11. If desired, the inner end of the outer link 10 is provided with shoulders 12 to cooperate with the end 13 of the adjacent link 5 so as to prevent accidentaldislodgment of the link 10 from the link 5. The outer end of the lock casing is bifurcated on opposite sides as indicated by the numeral 14, while catches15 of a right triangular "configuration in cross section are pivoted at their ver tices through the medium of pivot pins 16 which engage ears 17 on the vertices of the catches. A leaf spring 18 has the respective ends thereof slidably arranged in slots 19 adjacent the bases of the triangular catches, the outer ends of the spring 18 projecting a slight distance beyond the hypotenuse sides of the catches. This spring serves to normally hold the bases of the triangular catches in a plane at right angles to the planes of the sides of the lock casing.
In order to actuate the catches so as to draw the hypotenuse sides thereof in alinement with the outer sides of the casing to permit of the insertion of the lock casing in the opening 7, a link 20 has one end connected to the intermediate portion of the spring 18 and is in turn )ivotally connected at its opposite end to a lever 21 positioned within the casing, which lever is pivoted to the inner surface of the inner wall thereof, as indicated at 22, the opposite end serving as a handle 23. When in the position shown in Fig. 4 the catches are prevented from moving, but whenthe lock casing is extended and the handle pulled outwardly the spring 18 is bent in an arcuate form toward the outer end of the casing so as to move the hypotenuse sides of the catches in alinement with the-outer sides of the lock casing.
As intimated, cooperative latch means are provided for preventing accidental sliding movement of the lock casing in the link. In thi instance, there is employed a resilient pawl 24:, one end being rigidly attached, as at 25, to the inner surface of the lock casing adjacent the inner end, while the opposite end is arranged in an opening 26 in the opposite wall of the lock casing to permit of the free end of the pawl engaging a notch 27 in the inner surface of the link 10. By pressing the pawl toward the bottom of the casing the free end will be moved inwardly and disengaged from the notch to consequently permit of the casing being moved outwardly. Likewise the pawl 24:, when the casing is at the outer end of the link 10 willengage another notch 28 to prevent displacement of the lock casing.
The operation of the invention will be reviewed as follows:
Assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and it is desired to place the device in the position as illustrated in Fig. 2, the lever 21 i moved outwardly so as to bend the spring 18 and consequently arrange the hypotenuse sides of the catches substantially flush with the outer surface of the lock casing, whereupon the lock casing is projected into the opening 7 and the handle 23 on the lever released to permit of the "catches being extended. The outer link 10 is now moved inwardly until the pawl 24 engages the notch 27 the outerend of the link being arranged in close relation with the outer surface of the watch casing, the pawl serving to prevent accidental sliding movement, and as the link incloses the handle 23 and prevents movement thereofit will be understood that an accidental disengagement of the catches is prevented. To unlock the parts it is onl necessary to reverse the operation describe It will be understoodthat the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of the invention; and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described including a link, a lock casing slidably mounted therein, manually operable catch means mounted in the casing and adapted for removable engagement in a watch casing, and cooperative means for removably holding the lock casing in a latched position in theend link to prevent accidental movement of the catch means and also in a latched position to prevent accidental displacement of the lock casing from the link and permit of the actuation of the catch means.
2. A device of the character described including a link, a lock casing slidably mounted in the link, triangular shaped catches pivotally mounted in the outer end of the lock casing and adapted for removable engagement in the opening in a watch casing, re-
silient means for the catches, and manually operable mean mounted in the lock casing and operably onnected to the resilient means for bending the resilient means so as to draw the catches within the lock casing when desired. t
