Description

To all whom t may concern:
caf doors designed for use on cnn-noon.
Specication of Letters Eaten-t. taftented 'Baia-r. 2&3, Milet..
Application filed December 28, 1916. S rial No. 139,238.
Be it known that ive, VVLen-Css and lllTlLLIAM Srocnnrnn, citizens of Vthe "United States, residing at Glassport, in the county of Allegheny and State oit Pennsylvania, have invented certain nejvand useful lnr' provcnicnts in Car-'Doors,ot `which the tollowing is a specification.
This i'iivention relates to improveine-nts in car doors and particularly to that type of ailivay freight cars, or for other pr-.rposcs for which it is found applicable.
An. object oi this intention is to provide a car door of the type set forth which is permanently supported at its top and bottoni vwhether the door be in a position for closing; the car door opening or when, shifted to aposition at the iront or foone side of the openino'.
Another obj ect of this invention is to provide a car door oit the character described from the outside or" whichit is impossible to remove the car door hanging devices, there by preventing access of unauthorized per sons to the car, and at the same time establishing a nearly perfect union of the car body'and the door, thus providing-against the entrance of foreign matter dueto climatic conditions.
Further objects of this invention are v.to provides car door which. is, simple in its construction and arrangement, strong,v durable and eilicient in its use, inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily opened and closed.
To the accomplishment, of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts heren in specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanyinp;4 drawing; Whe-rein is shown an embodiment oit the invention.
In the drawing forming a4 portion of this specification and wherein lil-retnuinerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is an elevation of the outside of a boX car embodying the invention, with the door in open position.
Fig. 2 is a bottoin'view of Fig. l, showing the car door supporting devices.
Fig. 3 is a. fragmentary perspective view of the ear body andthe car door, illustrating latchin device. for holdingv the door in ci osed position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing,
l represents the ordinary freight car body' provided with the sual side door entrance Q. Bin outside door 3, slidably supported at the top and base, is arranged to cover the entire door entrance 2.
The hangers, supporting the car` door 3 at its upper corners, are in some respects similar to those described in our United Sta-tes Patent No. 1,154,903., and consist of thc integrally iorined metallic bodyT portions 4l bent at right angles to 'forni the edge portions 5 and the extensions 6. Theeirteir `sions 6 are provided with slotted lill-shaped portions i to forni bearings i'orthe rollers S, thechubs oi3 'which normally seat in the apex ol=-the lei-shaped portions 7.
Secured to the side of the car body l at the top thereof so as to have `a portion arrangedover the opening 2 and the remaining porti-on, projecting to one side of the opening, is an upper guide-rail 9, Which is supported and secured in position by the.
brackets l0, 11 and 12. The guide-rail 9 is adapted V13o-entend through the slotted it shaped portions 7 and be engaged by the rollers 8.
lhek lower corners of the car door 2 are provided with. the hanger members 13, consistingQo-l" the body portions ll bent at right angles toiorin the edge portions l5 and the extensions 16. Adiacent the ends ot the extensions i6 are the apertures 17, securely mounted into which is thc guide-rod ld, in a manner so that one end oi the said guide rod will Yforni the rod projection 3 9.
The angle bars 20, extending transversely of the outside of the car door 3, 'are provided to strengthen the door and are secured thereto, by 'means ci the bolts 2l and the nuts 22, which, With-the scr irs 23, also secure the hangers at their respective cornei-sto the car door. rlhe nuts Z2 of the bolts 21g are positioned against the angles oi" the bars .20, thus saiieg'uardingM against their removal from the exterior ci the freightv car.
Securely mounted on the side of the car body l, at the bottoni thereof, are the brach'- ets 24; and 9.5 provided with the apertures 26 and?? respectively. r
The guide-rod 18, carried bythe hanger members 13, extends through the aperture,-
yit is to be understood that is `merely illustrative and that various 26 of-tlie bracket 25, and holds the door permanently supported at its bottom.l When 'the car door is in the closed position, the i projection 19, of the guide-rod 18, will engage in the aperture 27 of the bracket 24: and
maybe looked by passing the 'key 28 throughthe aperture 29 vin the projection 19, or in any desired manner.
rifhe usual stop strips 30 are provided to limit the movement of the car door' inI either direction.
'From the i'orcgoing description, taken 1n -connection with the acoompzn'iying drawing, 4the advantages of the construction and the method oi oloerationl will be readily apparent to those skilled 1n the art Ato which the .invention appertains, and while describing the principle of operation of the. invention together with the device which is now 'considered `to be the best embodiment thereof, the device shown changes in `the form, yproportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the prin-` edly supported by the said ciple or sacrificing any of' the advantages as delined. in the appended having one end -thereof projecting beyond hanger members,V
the edge ofthe said car door and having an aperture formed therein for'the reception of a loeking-e1ement, saidv guide rod having a' slidable connection with one of the said brackets intermediate of the Said hanger members and the -said projeetingendof tl.'A guide rod adapted forA passage through the aperture lin the other of said brackets.
In testimony whereof We .aflix our signa-l tures inthe presence of two Witnesses.
