To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BIE, a citizen of the Kingdom of Norway, residing in Winterthur, Switzerland, have invented the following-described new and useful Improvement in Engine-Cylinders.
This invention relates to cylinder construction for internal combustion engines, and is concerned particularly with the heads thereof, being .designed more especially,
- though not necessarily exclusively, for constant pressure oil engines having their fuel injection valves arranged centrally in the heads. The object is to provide a construction of head suitable for these, and other,
engines which affords accessto the cooling space in the head, simplifies repair, reduces expansion strains, and improves the cooling.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the head and adjacent portion of the body of the cylinder;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the head, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a head with a slightly modified construction;

The head is in this instance provided with three valve sockets 0, e and f passing through the cooling space m, the socket 0 being central and preferably separate from the head and the sockets e and f at opposite sides being preferably integral. The socket or tube 0 is received in an opening 9 in the top of the head and contains a fuel injection valve, which comprises a housing or casing .9, containing a valve propert, the device being of known character, operating to atomize and inject the oil into the combustion chamber by a blast of air. under high pressure when the part t is unseated. The interiors of the sockets e and f are designed to receive combustion air and starting air valves, w and 2 respectively, and terminate in openings 0 and d through the inner wall 4) of the head, which wall partlally separates the cooling space m in the head from the valve delivers the atomized fuel into the compressed air in the cylinder. In order to admit the fuel the closure piece is formed withacentral aperture is, preferably flared toward the combustion chamber, as shown.
In the embodiment of the invention shown. in Figs. 1 and 2 the piece Z has a boss to pro jecting inwardly of the head and screwed firmly at a to the socket 0, the outer portion of the piece bearing tightly against the wall v,- but instead of being screwed only centrally the closure piece may be fastened at more than one point if desired. As shown, the said piece is not only retained by the fuel valve socket, but also serves to hold the latter in position by drawing a flange or shoulder h thereon against the upper part of the head. v
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 8 the boss on carries a which is fastened with bolts b against the socket 0.
The closure piece is readily replaced in event of injury, may be made of specially resisting material, and the fact of its being free for radial expansion materially reduces the heat tension in the head. It also affords access to the interior of the head, for clearing the same of accumulations, and being a separate piece may be finished ofl' smooth on the inside surface, thereby rendering the cooling more effective by lessening the possibility of adhesion of scale and steam bubbles at the region of most intense heat and consequently greatest likelihood of formation of deposits.
It will be understood that the drawing does not purport to show features and details unessential to the invention, and that,
for example, wherever joints should be made tight in practice the usual expedients may be resorted to in actual construction.
