Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1918..
Application filed December 31, I914. Serial No. 879,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. SCHULTZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Wauwatosa, in thecounty of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to manual-control and to automatic and manual controlfire extinguishers such as are generally applied to oil-storage tanks, and it consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and.
pointed out in the claims'of this specification, its object being to providefor autodium in the eventof an explosion occurring in the oil tank to which said extinguisher is applied. .A further object of the invention is to provide for an automatic opera tion of the extinguisher in the event of a rise of temperature in the tank beyond a predetermined degree. V
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a sectional viewof a fragment'of an oil-storage tank, and a chemical fire-extinguisher asso- -'ciated therewith, the sectional parts of the view being on the plane indicated by line 1-1 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 2, an elevation partly in section as indicated by line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view throughthe diaphragm disposed beneath the cylindrical piston, said view being shown on an enlarged scale.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 3
indicates the body and 4: the roof of an oil storage-tank provided with outer anglebrackets 5 supporting a chemical fire-extinguisher. My invention combines an automatic' mechanical control with the manualcontrol of the type of extinguisher shown or with any other type of extinguisher applied to an oil-storage tank, but no claim is made in this application to the general construction of said extinguisher.
The manual control of the extinguisher is shown as embodying a plug 6 having a shouldered stem 7 extending through a chambered fittingS incasing said plug outside of the tank, and a lift-rod 9 is fastened to a collar 10 fast on the outer portion of the plug-stem and depends therefrom so as to- 15 having a bevel-point element 16 thereof engaging a flaring notch in a piston 17 supporting a diaphragm 18 in an extinguishing medium conveyer pipe 19 in thecylinder 20 of the extinguisher. Within the oil tank another ferrule 21 on the pipe 12 abuts a tube 22 sweated on a fusible sleeve 23 en gaged by the rod 11, and a nut 24 run on the screw-threaded inner end of said rod, against the sleeve, is held in place by a jamnut 25.
Attached to the exposed eye-end of the plug-stem 7 is a cable=26, or other suitable flexible device, that extends over the flange 27 and roof 4 of the tank. The flexible device is run on a sheave 28 and through attached to a disk 32 for which the cupola" is provided with a seat 33. As shown, the cupola may be provided with vent-apertures 34 above the disk.
A branch 35 of the flexible device 26 is trained on another sheave 36, in the cupola, and attached to a weight 37 having a hanger 38 provided with a fusible section 38, the hanger being shown fastened to a bracket 39 supporting the sheave 36.
In the event of an ignition of gases in the tank it is expected that the fusible sleeve of the extinguisher will be destroyed and an automatic release of the seal take place, but. if this fails, the confined extinguishing medium is released as the result of an automatic release of the weight 37, due to a destruction I of the fusible-section 38 of the weighthanger 38.
It it within the scope of my invention, as herein claimed, to employ a chemical fire extinguisher that does not necessarily involve a fusible sleeve to operate the same, as a parting of the weight hanger may be depended upon to bring about an automatic operation of the extinguisher to permit escape of confined extinguishing medium into the storage tank.
Automatic removal of the plug 6 of the fie 1,260,818
extinguisher to release confined extinguishing mediunn-also takes place in the event of an explosion in the tank, the concussion serving'to' unseat the disk 32 to which the flexible device 26 is attached.
It will be understood of course, that my invention is not restricted to use in connection with a movable member or disk in a cupola, for it will be clear that the cable 26 may be attached toany portion of a tank or building, that is likely to be actuated by an explosion, the essential feature being that the cable should be attached to, and actuated by a movement of the part of the tank or building in such a manner that the extinguishing medium will be released and discharged into the tank.
I claim:
1. A covered oil-storage tank having a manual control chemical fire-extinguisher associated therewith, a cupola on the root of the tank, a disk seated in the cupola, and
means connecting the disk with the manualcontrol of the extinguisher,
2. A covered oil-storage tank having an automatic and manual-control. chemical lireextinguisher associated therewith,- a cupola on the root of the tank, a disk seated in the cupola, and means connecting the disk with the manual-control of the extinguisher.
3. A covered oil-storage tank having a manual-control chemical tire-cxtinguisher associated tlicrewitln'a cupola on the root of the tank a disk seated in the cupola, a suitably supported flexible device connecting the disk with the manual control of the extinguisher, a Weight attached to a'branch of said flexible device, and a fusible hanger for the weight.
4. A covered oil-storage tank having a -1nanual control chemical fire extinguisher associated therewith, a cupola on the roof of the tank, a disk seated in the cupola, a sheave on the roof and a pair of sheaves'in the (31lpOlzl,'t flexible device trained onthe roof-sheave as well as on oneof the sheaves in the cupola and connecting-the disk with the manual-control of the extinguisher, a branch of the flexible device trained on the other sheave in said cupola, a fusible hanger, and a weight attached to the hanger' and the branch of said flexible device.
The combination with a storage coniiartment for oil. provided with a mo 'able portion that will. be actuated by combustion therein, a fire extinguisherprovided with manual controlling means for cruising the extinguisher to discharge an extinguishing medium into the compartment, and a conncction between the nu. 'able portion and the manual control of the extinguisher whereby the extinguisher may be operated auton'iatically.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
