CLOTHES-DRYING nnvrcn.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 2%;1913.
Application filed September 7, 1917. Serial No. 190,208.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. REED, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Drying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as clothes driers, and more particularly relates to a clothes drying device especially adapted for attachment to a window casing.
This invention has for its principal aim and object to provide a device of the above character designed so as to be readily attached to a window casing andvproject laterally from the outer face thereof in order to support bedding, clothes and the like so that such articles may be effectively aired and dried.
More particularly this invention embraces the provision of a clothes drying device wherein the construction of the supporting frame and the platform is novel and assure of the quick drying of the clothes which may be placed thereon while the platform is of an open work nature and serves to assure of the effective airing of the clothes.
As a further improvement this invention includes the provision of improved means for attaching the device to the window casing in order that it may be retained in a properly supported po ition with respect thereto.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number p of parts are few, the construction simple, the
cost of production low and the e hi h.
%)ther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration :3. convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may he 'made ciency without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention; attached to a window casing and partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same showing the casing in transverse section.
Similar charactersof reference are employed in all the above described views to indicate the corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanylng drawings, there is illustrated a window caslngl of conventional construction mounted in a wall 2 of a building while attached to the window casing is the improved clothes drying device indicated in its entirety by the numeral 3.
The improved device in the present instance consists of a main frame composed of side bars 4 formed of rod metal and bent at the extreme outer ends to form eyes 5. The bars are also bent at points substantially intermediate the ends to form opposed eyes 6 and are bent adjacent their inner ends to form opposed eyes 7 for a purpose that will presently appear. A plurality of cross bars 8 are now employed and terminate at their outer ends in hooks 9 designed for engagement with the opposed eyes 5, 6 and 7, as indicated in the drawings. A platform is now provided and is disposed on a main supporting frame and preferably consists of sections 10 of a rectangular configuration formed desirably of suitable rod metal. Diagonally extending cross rods 11 are connected on each section and these cross rods are desirably formed from a single piece of rod metal one end of which has a loop 12 formed thereon for engagement with one side of one section while the rod metal is extended across forming one of the rods 11 and looped about the opposite side of the same section, as indicated by the numeral 13, and thence extended across to form another rod 11, as indicated, preparatory to being arranged about the opposite side of the section. This piece of rod metal of course is arranged similarly throughout its length while its opposite extreme free end terminates in a loop 14 which is anchored in one side of the section, as indicated. As is apparent each section is of an open work nature for a purpose that will presently appear. In connecting the. plat orm sections to the main frame suitable securing devices, such as rings 15 are employed being arranged about the cross bars 8 and about the outer sides of the sections, as indicated in Fig. 2. Other rings 16 are employed for connecting the adjacent inner sides of the sections to each other.
In attaching the'main frame to the window casing the inner portions 17 of the side bars 4 are extended through openings 18 in the opposite sides of the window casing adjacent the sill while the extreme inner ends are threaded and are engaged by suitable adjustable elements such as nuts 19 which in turn bear against the inner faces of the casing. Braces 20 are now employed and have their looped ends 21 arranged about the side bars so as to abut the eyes 6 which limit outward movement thereof while their outer ends are designed to bear against the last 22 mounted on the outer face of the wall 2 at a suitable distance beneath the sill of the window casing.
Suitable means have been employed for hanging clothes to the side bars of the frame, in the present instance consisting of fastening devices 23 which if desired may be constructed in accordance with curtain pins, so as to be slidably arranged on the rods.
In use, assuming that the parts have been assembled in the manner described and as indicated in the drawings, bedding, such as a mattress, may be supported upon the platform and conveniently aired and in addition sheets, pillow cases, and other articles may be supported on the platform and held from displacement through the instrumentality of clothes pins not shown which may be employed to hold the articles on the diagonally extending rods of the platform sections. It is to be appreciated that in view of the open nature of the platform sections the clothes can be readily aired and inasmuch as they are positioned 'exteriorly of the building the rays of the sun will act thereon to effectively dry them.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing description a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. However, at this point it may be mentioned that owin to the construction of the main frame it will be appreciated that when it is intended to detach the same from position subsequent to the disengagement of the side bars 4 from the window casing the entire device may be drawn into the room whereupon the cross bars 8 may be disengaged from the side bars and the outer and inner cross bars may be in turn disengaged from the rings 15 so as to be consequently disconnected from the platform sections. This leaves the side bars 4 and the cross bars 8 all independent of each other and it is apparent that they may be readily placed in a compact form since the rings 16 serve also as a means for pivotally connecting the sections 10 of the platform the latter may be folded so as to occupy minimum space when not in use.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof and it is intended that all matter contained inthe above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of. the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A clothes drying device including a collapsible rectangular frame composed of two side bars adapted for engagement with the sides of a window casing and cross bars designed for removable engagement with the side bars, a sectional platform embodying a pair of sections of an open work nature movably connected relative to each other and removably connected to the cross bars, and bracing means slidably connected to the side bars and adapted for bearing against the side of a house for assuring of the'proper position of the device.
2. A clothes drying device including a collapsible rectangular frame composed of side bars, eyes formed at suitable spaced intervals on the side bars, cross bars terminating in hooks for removable engagement with the eyes in the side bars the inner ends of the side bars being adapted for engagement with the sides of a window casing, means for anchoring the sides of the frame in position, a sectional platform composed of a pair of sections of "an open work nature, means for pivotally connecting the sections with respect to each other, means for removably connecting the sections to the cross bars of the frame, braces slidably connected to the side bars and limited in their outward movement by the eyes and adapted for bearing against the side of a house for assuring of the proper position of the device.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
