CHARLIE BENTON BAKER, OF SALTILLOVILLE, INDIANA.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 593,186, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed April 29, 1896. Serial N0x 589,569. (No model.)
To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE BENTON BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Saltilloville, in the county of W'ashington and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Clothes-Drier, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in clothes-driers.
The object of the present invention is to 1 improve the construction of clotheswlriers and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one adapted to be readilysuspended from 'a ceiling and capable of compactly hanging the clothes out of the way adjacent to the ceiling, where the air is the warmest and is best adapted for rapidly drying the clothes.
A. further object of the invention is to enable the clothes to be readily placed on and removed from the drier and to permit the latter to be readily removed from the ceiling when desired.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothesdrier constructed in accordancewith this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating the construction of the fastening devices for attaching the supporting-frame to a ceiling. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of detachably securing the drier-arms to the longitudinal bar of the drier-frame. Fig. 4: is adetail sectional view on line 4 40f Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a supporting frame detachably secured to a ceiling and composed of crossed diagonally-disposed bars 2, centrally secured to a block or head 3 and arrangedin L-shaped hooks or hangers 4, provided with threaded shanks and arranged to engage the joists of a building in order to afford a firm support. The outer portions of the bars of the supporting-frame are retained in the L- shaped hooks or hangers by pivoted locking devices 5, consisting of shanks forming the pivotsand arms extending from the shanks at right angles and adapted to engage the shanks of the L-shaped hooks or hangers. Two of the arms are provided with pivoted locking devices or buttons, and this number is sufficient for securely retaining the supporting-frame in the L-shaped hangers or hooks. The pivoted locking devices are adapted to be turned out of engagement with the hooks when it is desired to remove the supporting-frame.
A drier-frame 6 is suspended from the supporting-frame by cords or ropes 7 or other similar connections. The cords or ropes 7 are secured at their lower terminals to the supporting-frame at the ends of parallel bars 8 and extend upward to pulleys 9, which are arranged at the outer ends of the crossed bars 2 of the supporting-frame, and they then extend to a pair of pulleys 10, mounted on the supporting-frame at the block or head thereof. The upper terminals of the cords or ropes are attached to a ring 11, which is connected with one end of a hoisting rope or cord 12, and the latter extends horizontally fromthe supporting-frame to a pulley 13, which is mounted on one of the walls of the room. The hoisting rope or cord 12 is provided at its outer or lower end with a pulley, through which passes a securing rope or cord 14, which has one end attached to the wall at a point below the pulley 13 and which is adapted to be connected to a hook 15 for holding the drier-frame at any desired adjustment.
The L-shaped hooks or hangers are disposed away from the wall on which the pulley 13 is mounted, so that the tension or strain on the hoisting-rope will operate to retain the supporting-frame on the horizontal arms of the hooks orhangers and against the vertical arms of the same. The pulley 13 is detachably secured to the wall by means of a screw, hook, or the like.
The drier-frame comprises a longitudinal bar and the cross-bars S, which are arranged parallel with each other. The longitudinal bar is provided at its side edges with a series of sockets 16, receiving drier-arms 17, which are detachable and which consist of rods.
The sockets at one edge of the longitudinal bar are arranged opposite the intervals be tween the sockets at the other edge of the longitudinal bar, and both sets or series of sockets extend inward through the bar beyond the center thereof to cause the inserted portions of the drier-arms to overlap, whereby the bar is strengthened and is prevented from splitting lengthwise. This construction enables a lighter bar to be employed than would be the case were the drier-arms to extend only half-Way through the longitudinal bar or a less distance.
The drier-arms may be of any desired number and are detachable to facilitate m0unting the clothes to be dried on the drier-frame and also to enable them to be removed from the drier-frame when the clothes-drier is not in use, in order to keep them perfectly clean to avoid soiling clothes.
The supporting-frame is provided with a pulley or roller 18, located a short distance from the pulleys or rollers 10 and adapted to be employed when the hoisting-rope is not connected with the pulley 13 of the side wall.
It will be seen that the clothes-drier is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to a ceiling and is quickly removed therefrom, and thatit is capable of enabling clothes to be hung close to the ceiling Where the air is the warmest and best adapted for drying clothes.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of constructionv may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacri-. ficing any of the ad vantages of this invention.
What I claim is 1. In a. clothes-drier, the combination of a supporting-frame composed of crossed bars centrally connected, pulleys 9 arranged at the ends of the crossed bars, a pair of pulleys 10 centrally mounted on the supporting-frame,
a drier-frame,supporting-ropes extending up ward from the drier-frame, passing over the pulleys 9 and extending to the center of the supporting-frame and passing around and between the pair of pulleys 10, the inner portions of said supporting-ropes extending from the pulleys 10 in the same direction, the pulley 18 mounted on the supporting-frame and extending beneath the inner portions of said ropes, the pulley 13 designed to be mounted on a wall in the same plane as the other pulley, a rope 12 passing over the pulley 13 and having its upper end connected with each of the supporting-ropes and provided at its lower end with a pulley, a rope 14 passing over the latter and having one end permanently secured to a suitable support and adapted to have its other end detachably connected with the same, and means for mounting the supporting-frame at the ceiling of the room,.sub stantially as described. Y
2. In a clothes-drier, the combination of a supporting-frame composed of crossed bars, the Lshaped hangers designed to be secured permanently to and depend from a ceiling and having their horizontal portions receiv ing and supporting the crossed bars, and the pivoted locking devices mounted on the crossed bars and engaging the vertical portions of the hangers, and adapted to be turned out of such engagement to permit the removal of the supportingfi'ame, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoiug as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
