To all whom it, may Concern Ventilator, of which the following is ,a specification.
. Thepresent-V invention appertains toyentilators, and aims toprovidea novehandimproved device of that vcharacter for use on Pullman and passenger coaches, street cars, buildings and elsewhere.
It is the object of the invention to provid a ventilator of simple and inexpensive yet practical and effective construction, and one having novel means;:foncontrolling the flow of air therethrough,
With the foregoing and other objects in view whichiwill. appearas the description. proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-.
nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a horizontal section of the ventilator taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken on the line 3*?) of F ig. 2.
At the outset, it is pointed out that the pres ent construction can be built in the railroad coach, street car, or other structure as a part thereof, and can be arranged in various positions according to its use.
The device embodies an elongated casing constructed of sheet metal, as illustrated, and comprising the back wall 1, top2 (which may be the bottom if the device is in inverted position from that shown in Fig. 2), end walls 3 united with the back wall and wall 2, and longitudinal plate 1 united at its ends with the end walls 3 and bent on alongitudinal line to provide the bent back portion 5 outside of the casing. The plate 4 has its bend facing the back wall 1 and spaced therefrom to provide a longitudinal opening 6 across which a screen 7 is disposed, the respective edge of the back wall 1 being bent back or reflexed, as at 8, for the attachment 4 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the screen 7, and the bend'of the plate 4; being formed, as at 9, for the attachment of said screen. The screen prevents the passage of cinder-s or other formed objects through the opening 6, and the casing can be arranged in any suitable position for directing the air through the opening 3 in .the direction desired.
The end walls 3 have the bent back U- shaped portions 10 and U-shaped members 11 are secured to the wall 2 and plate 1, to provide the openings 12 in the front'of the casing. The openings 19. are in that side of the casing at right angles with the side having; the opening 6.
The forward edges of thetop 2 and plate 4; are bent back or reflexed, as at 13 and 141, to provide suitable bearings for rock shafts 15 which are journaledthrough saidrbent back or doubled portions centrally of the openings 12. The forward edge of the bent back portion 5 is also refleXed or doubled, as at 16, to assist in supporting the shafts 15. Plates or dampers 17 are secured to the shafts 15 and are swingable therewith within the openings 12 said dampers closing the openings when the dampers are brought into a longitudinal position.
As a means for operating the dampers, gear wheels 18 are secured to the shafts 15 between the plate 4: and its bent back portion 5, and mesh with a longitudinal rack bar 19 slidable within the guide formed by said plate and its bent back portion, the rack bar 19 hearing against the bend of the plate and being slidable between said bend and the pinions 18. The rack bar 19 can be reciprocated by any suitable means, and from a distant point, for rotating the shafts 15.
A longitudinal series of transverse partitions 20 of sheet metal or other suitable material are secured to the back wall 1, plate l; and-wall 2, and terminate short of the front wall or side of the casing, said partitions extending across the opening 6 and dividing the air into a plurality of streams. lVhen the dampers 17 are swung in one direct-ion as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1, the inner side edges thereof move adja cent to certain of the partitions 20 for directing the air correspondingly, and when the dampers are swung in the opposite direction to the dotted line positions, as seen in Fig. 1, the other side edges of the dampers are brought adjacent to the other partitions 20 for changing the flow of air correspondingly. The dampers 17 project from the openings 12 to catch the air and direct it into the casing and thence through the opening 6, or the dampers 17 can be so located that the air current passing the openings 12 Will suck the air from the casing and opening 6, which ever action is desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A ventilator embodying a casing having an air inlet opening in one wall and an outlet opening in another Wall, partitions within the casing transversely thereof extending across the outlet opening toward the inlet opening, and a damper mounted :tor oscillation within the inlet opening and swingable adjacent to different partitions for directing the air thereto.
2. A ventilator embodying a casing having a longitudinal inlet opening in one wall and a longitudinal outlet opening in another wall, longitudinally spaced transverse partitions Within the casing extending across the outlet opening toward the inlet opening, a rock shaft journaled in the easflepteii or thiii patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ing Within the inlet opening, a damper carried by the rock shaft and swingable adjacent to diiierent partitions for directing the air thereto, and means for swinging said rook shaft.
3. A ventilator embodying a casing having an inlet opening in one wall and an outlet opening in another Wall adjacent to said wall, the casing having a doubled portion between said openings, transverse partitions Within the casing extending across the outlet opening, a rock shaft Within the inlet opening and journaled in said'doubled portion, a damper carried by said shaft swingable adjacent to different partitions for directing the air thereto, a pinion secured to said shaft Within the doubled portion, and a rack bar slidable in said doubled portion and meshing with said pinion.
