BERT RAM E. MORE-LAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MORELAND ADVERTISING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
MAILING-FOLDER.
Patented Mar.2fi,1l91@.
Application filed December 3, 1917. Serial No. 205,138.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM E. Moran- LAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mailing- Folders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates .to advertising devices and comprises a to be folded to form an envelop, and a return card to'be inserted within the folded letter or envelop, and the object of the invention is to provide improved means for locating and confining the return card within the folded letter or envelop and to permit ready removal of the card after unfolding of the letter envelop.
On the accompanying drawing the features of my invention are clearly illustrated.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the letter unfolded and the return card in place,
Fig. 2 shows the letter with the card therein folded up to form theenvelop, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on plane 3-3, Fig. 2.
A rectangular sheet of comparatively stiff paper is creased transversely along, one or.
more lines 10 to enable the sheet to be readily folded to form the envelop, the end section 11 being somewhat narrower and having its sides beveled to form the flap to which a seal 12 may be applied to close the envelop. The end section 13 of the sheet has the tongue let extending therefrom for supporting the return card 15. This card has the extension 16 provided with the slot 17 for receiving the tongue 14. The width of the extension being such that when the card is applied to the tongue and the sheet folded along the lines 10, the fold at the base of the outer section 13 will engage with and surround the outer edge of the extension and the card will be held in position on the tongue in. the folded sheet or envelop. Instead of having one or more intermediate sections 13 there could be only one with a flap thereon so that the fold joining the flap to the sheet would engage around the projection to hold the card securely in place. When the seal is broken and the letter unfolded the card can readily be slipped from the tongue. Preferably the letter sheet adapted card has slits or perforations 19 along the juncture of the extension 16 with the card so that this extension can be readily torn OK after removal of the card from the letter, the card being then of ordinary postal-card dimensions.
The arrangement I have described is very simple and practica, there being no slits or openings in the letter sheet itself which would weaken it or permit ready tearing thereof. The tongue and slot permit the card to be very easily positioned and held in the sheet during folding thereof, and after folding it is impossible for the card to become displaced or lost.
Having described my invention, as follows:
1. In an advertising device of the class described, the combination of a letter sheet scored transversely to form folding lines whereby the sheet may be readily folded into an open-ended envelop, a tongue extending from one end of said sheet, and a return card having a slot for receiving said tongue whereby said card will be positioned and held after folding of the sheet.
2. In an advertising device of the class described, the combination of a rectangular sheet, a tongue extending from one end of said sheet, a return card, ,and an extension on said return card provided with a slot for receiving said tongue, said sheet having a transverse folding crease in such position relative to the card on the tongue that when the sheet is folded at the crease it will engage against and around the extension to hold the card on the tongue.
3. In an advertising device, the combination of a rectangular sheet of paper creased transversely to longitudinally divide the sheet into'a plurality of sections and to permit folding together of such sections into the form of an open-ended envelop, the end section having a tongue extending from its transverse edge, and a return card having a slot at one edge for receiving said tongue, said sheet when folded together receiving the card edge'in a fold to hold it on the tongue.
4. In an advertising device of the class described, the combination of a rectangular sheet of paper adapted to be folded along transverse lines to form an envelop, a short I claim tongue extending from one end of said sheet a return card, an extension for one edge of said card having a slot for receiving said tongue, said card edge being held in one of 5 the folds when the sections are folded together to be thereby held against displacement, there being perforations along the base of said card extension whereby said extension may readily be torn from the card.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe l0 my7name this 28th day of November, A. D., 191
BERTRAM E. MORELAND.
