ADVERTISEMENT CARRIER.
Application led .April 5,
This invention relates to advertisement car A riers or enclosing devices.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described comprising a novel combination of an envelope for a booklet or pamphlet and an eXtension cover of any desirable size for carrying a message, letter or other legend.
Another objectof the invention is to pro vide a device'of the character described which shall form an advertisement mailing carrier of improved-construction for a pamphlet or booklet and an accompanying letter on an extended covery portion thereof, Which carrier shall positively secure the contents therein while permitting easy access for postal inspection when required.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described comprising a neat and attractive advertising folder or mailing wrapper of simple construction, which shall be cheap 4to manufacture, and practicaly and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly7 consists in the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the'various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is al perspective view of a cut sheet or blank from which a mailing advertisement-l carrier embodying the invention is formed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved carrier in open position;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the improved carrier in open position but with said extension cover folded;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the improved carrier in folded or closed position;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 5.-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the improved device showing the method of inspecting the contents to comply with postal regulations when using the device for third class mailing.'
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 de notes an advertisement carrier or enclosing device embodying the invention and as here 1927. Serial No. 181,069.
shown is formed of a single sheet of material cut to form a blank indicated at B in Fig. 1. As will be described hereinafter, said blank 1s creased, folded, and pasted to form an envelope portion E for enclosing a booklet or pamphlet- P, and an extended cover portion C extending from the side ofthe envelope for carrying a letter or other legend L.
Said blank may be made of any suitable sheet material suc-h as heavy or light cardboard, strong paper, or the like. The blank comprises -an envelope forming portion di* videdby creased lines into sections 10"L and 10",4 and a cover forming portion consisting of rectangular sections 10c, 10d, l()e and 10f, which extend from one of the sections 10a, said cover portion being of greater length and area than the envelope portion, as shown in Fig. 2. .All of said cover sections may be equal and superimposable on folding to form a compact mailing unit as shown in Fig. 5.
After the blank is made, the envelope por* tion E is formed by folding the portion 10a on the creased line 10g and permanently securing it tothe portion 10 in any suitable manner, as for example, by the pasted flaps 10ll and l()i formed to extend from the edges of the portions 10a and 10b respectively. Preferably the flaps 10h and 10i are pasted by adhesive applied at 10m on portion 10b and on 101, thus confining the gluing operation to one side of the blank.
The portion 10"' is provided with a closure flap F having a slit 10h while the portion 10 has atab 10-I cut therein to engage in said slit for interlocking with said tab, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
' The practical use ofthe device 10 will now be apparent. After forming the improved carrier 10 as described above, the contents, such as a booklet or pamphlet P, may be enclosed in the envelope portion and the elosure flap F engaged with the tab 10j for securely retaining the contents lin place. The sections of the cover portion C is now folded on lines indicated at l0 and lOland superimposed to overlie flap F thus forming a secondary closure for the said envelope portion. The inside surface of the cover portion is adapted to carry a suitable advertisement, letter or legend thereon for accompanying the' contents of the envelope. After the device 10 is folded as shown in Fig. 4, the cover portion is fastened securelyy to the envelope portion by means of a paster 11. A compact, rigid unitary structure is thus provided, the multiply .folded cover portion adding to the body .and stiffening the mail carrier so that it will withstand rough handling in the. mail.
The advertisement carrier 10 is also adapted to be used for third class mailing since its construction permits ready access to the contents of the envelope for inspection without opening the carrier. As seen from Fig. 5, it is merely necessary to partiallyunfold the end of the cover portion C, open the flap F and remove the contents of the envelo e for inspection. The contents may then e replaced, the Hap F closed, and the wrapper restored to its normal mailing condition.
Since the cover portion C is infolded along the line adjacent to t-he opening of the en: velope portion injury is prevented to said cover portion on inspection of the contents"a described above. The outer sides of the cover and envelope portions provide suitable space for the mailing addresses and stamping, and also provide for the convenient cancellation of the stamps by the postal authorities.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
,As various possible embodiments might be made of the. above invention, and as various changes Imight be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desi-re to secure by'Letters Patent 1. A device of the character describedfcomprising an envelope having an opening to receive a filler, said envelope having a closure iap and a legend bearing extension of greater length than said envelope in the direction beyond said opening when unfolded, said extension being foldable to form a structure of multiple thickness overlying the envelopeliap.
2. A device of the character described formed in one-piece comprising an elongated envelope portion adapted to receive a iller having an end closure flap, and a legend bearino extension having a plurality of sections fo dable to overlie said Hap, said extension forming a continuous sheet attached to a longitudinal edge of said envelope adjacent the closure.
3. A device of the character described comprising an envelope having a closure flap and an integral extension of greater length and width than said envelope, said extension being foldable lengthwise and Widthwise to ovcrle the envelope flap.
it. A device of the character described comprising an envelope having an end flap closure, and a cover portion formed integrally with one side of said envelope adjacent the closure, said portion being foldable to form a multi-ply structure overlying said flap closure.
5. A mail carrier comprising an envelope having a iapclosure at one end thereof, and a cover portion extending from a longitudinal side of said envelop-e beyond said end. when unfolded, said cover portion being foldable to form a secondary closure for the envelope, the contents of said envelope being accessible for inspection by partially unfolding said cover.v
6. A device of t-he character described made of a single blank cut and creased to have an envelope forming portion, a legend bearing cover extending from a Side of said portion, and a closure Hap for the envelope portion extending from said blank along a side ofthe envelope portion adjacent said cover, said cover consisting of a plurality of rectangular shaped' horizontally and vertically disposed sections foldable to overlie said closure iapof said envelope portion. f
In testimony whereof I affix my si ature. ABRAHAM DEUTSCHMEIS ER.
