WITN ESSES ATTORNEY INVEN-roR FRANK W. KLINE, 0F HUNTINGTON, INDIANA.
SALT AND BEPPER SHAKER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar.19, 1918.
Application led March 16, 1917. Serial No. 155,319.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Salt and Pepper Shakers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention contemplates improvements in condiment holders, and more particularly to that class thereunder known as closures therefor.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel construction of actuating means for effecting the turning of the perforated disk into or out of registration with the perforations.
Furthermore, I contemplate among other features the construction of an actuating means so bent at one terminal to facilitate the connection of the perforated disk to the under face of the cap.
A still further obj ect of the invention resides in the provisiony of a device of the above stated character which is associated with the condiment holder formed with a pair of compartments vfor the reception of dierent relishes to be discharged separately from the condiment holder, and one which may be simple in construction, durable and efficient in use and wherein the manipulation of the disk to either an open or closed position is effected in a simple and expeditious manner.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a condiment holder with the device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the cap and disk illustrating the manner of connecting the actuating` member with the cap and disk; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the disk witg the actuating member connected therewit Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 5 denotes a condiment holder provided with a vertical partition wall 6 for dividing the condiment holder into a salt compartment 7 and a pepper compartment- 8. A neck 9 is provided on the upper end of each of the compartments upon which is threadedly mounted a perforated cap 10.
11 denotes a perforated disk utilized in closing or opening the perforations 12 of the cap by the connection of the same with the cap through the employment of a disk actuating means 13. This actuating member 13 is preferably constructed from a singlel strand of flexible material, such as wire or the like of Substantially L-shaped form. providing at one end a vertically disposed gripping member 14 and a horizontally arranged operating arm 15. The operating arm is formed at its free end with an L- shaped pivot 16, t-he vertical portion of which projects through the axial opening of the respective disk and closure, while the horizontal portion is extended to overlie the cap, consequently adapting a novel manner of pivoting the disk to the cap. In order that movement may be imparted to the disk, the operating arm 15 of the actuating member is arranged in abutting engagement with the under face of the disk and projected through one of the outer perforations, denoted b v the character 17 of the disk. The arm is thence extended through the curved slot 18 of the cap and positioning the gripping member 14 thereof exteriorly of the flange 19 of the can and vertically thereof.
In view of the foregoing description, it will be manifest to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, that through the employment of an actuating member of the character set forth, will facilitate the discharge of either the pepper or salt separately from the condiment holder, and furthermore, will render the turning of the disk to bringy the perforations thereof into registration with the perforations of the cap in a simple and expeditious manner,.
and this likewise is true whenit is desired to close the perforations of the cap of the condiment holder.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have de scribed the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new, is
In .combination With a cap having a series of perforations and an arcuate slot` a perforated disk therefore, and an actuating member for said disk, said actuating member comprising a Vsingle strand of material bent at one end to provide a vertically disposed gripping member, the opposite end of A the actuating member being bent to provide an actuating arm terminating in an L-shaped pivot, the vertical portion of the pivot of the actuating `arm projecting centrally through the respective disk and cap for pivotally connecting the disk to said cap, the operating arm frictionally contacting with the under face of the disk and projecting through one of the outermost perforations thereof and thence through the slot of the cap for permitting movement to be imparted to the disk to bring the apertures thereof into and out of registration with 25 the apertures of the cap.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
FRANK W. KLINE.
