IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS CASE-STANDS.

Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 126,017, dated April 23, 1872.

Specification describing an Improved Stand for Compositors, &c., invented by ROBERT CHAPMAN, of Dublin, Ireland.

My invention consists of a stand to which a series of frames for supporting the, cases are hung in the manner described hereafter so that more ready access can be had to different cases than to cases arranged as drawers in a stand or frame.

My invention, although especially applicable to the construction of compositors stands, may be applied with advantage to cases for containing geological specimens, jewelry, &c.

A and A are the opposite sides of the stand, and are connected together by the top B and cross-bars D and E. A series of frames, G G G G G, are arranged within the stand, one above another, as shown in Fig. 3, but free from contact with each other, each frame consisting, in the present instance, of front and back horizontal strips (1. and I) connected together by transverse strips 6 e, and each frame having a strip, f, in front and a similar strip, 71., at the rear,'for retaining the type or other cases which the frame supports. To the opposite ends of each "frame are secured legs H H, and through the lower ends of the whole of the legs, as well as through the sides A and A of the stand, passes a rod, I, which serves to support the whole of the frames, and on which any one of the frames can be turned outward from the stand or inward into the same. This rod I is so situated that when the frames are moved inward and their legs bear against the cross-bar D they have a tendency to retain this position. By means of a handle, .10, however, and by a very slight effort, any one of the frames can be moved outward until the shoulders g on its legs catch against the crossbar-D, in which outward position, occupied by the frame G in the drawing, it will have a tendency to remain. In other words, any one or more of the frames can, by

a very slight effort, be tilted, on the rod I as a center, to either of the positions shown.

' The above-described apparatus may with advantage be adopted in place of the ordinary stand for compositors, in which different cases containing different styles of type are usually arranged to slide in ways one above the other, in the manner of ordinary drawers. v

The type-cases are supported by the frames, after moving any one of which outward its case, guided by the ribs f and h of the frame, can be withdrawn, by sliding it out endwise, and then placed on the top B of the stand for the compositors use.

A compositor, while he is setting type taken from the case on the stand, frequently requires type contained in cases below. If these cases are arranged as drawers, considerable effort is required to gain access to them, withdraw the type required, and then return the drawer to its place; but when the type is in cases sup- 7 ported by frames hung to a stand and admitting of being tilted in the manner described, ready access can be had to any case by a very slight effort.

It will be evident that my invention may be adopted with advantage by collectors of geological specimens, by jewelers, and others who desire to gain ready access to their cases.

When the stand is used for compositors a detachable box, K, for containing set-up matter may be so fitted to the stand as to rest with its rear edge on the cross-bar D, while its slot ted ends m fit over and are retained by the rod 1.

I claim as my invention-- A stand to which a series of frames for supporting the cases are hung, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
