PROTECTING DEVICE FOR GLASS CONTAINERS.
Application filed December 15, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTis BENTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices for Glass Containers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a protecting device for glass containers and has for its primary object to provide a simple and easily applied device for hot water bottles, jars or similar containers of glass or other material which is liable to breakage by expansion when hot water or other materials are placed therein.
It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a device for the above purpose embodying a body bar or plate upon which the container is adapted to be placed, said bar having an angular end to engage one side of the container in spaced relation to its bottom, and a slidable member mounted on said bar for engagement against the diametrically opposite side of the container.
It is also a further general object of my invention to provide a device for the above purpose, which is simple and durable in its construction, highly serviceable and effective in practical use and which can be manu factured at relatively small cost.
\Vith the above and other obj ects in iew the invention. consists in the improved construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the metal body bar which is bent in spaced relation to one of its ends at right L ngles to the plane of the bar as shown at 6, the said end of the bar being extended longitudinally to afford a. handle 7. The other end of the body bar 5 is also angularly bent, as at 8 in parallel relation to the portion 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof and the terminal 9 of the bar is bent inwardly at an obtuse angle with respect to the part 8 for engagement against the wall of the jar or container indicated at C.
The handle 7 in spaced relation to the angular part 6 of the bar is provided with inturned 'uide flanges 10 on its opposite longi tudinal edges for the slide plate 11 which is relatively narrow. One end of this plate is formed with a suitable finger piece 12 and the other end thereof is angularly bent toward the body bar 5, as shown at 13 for bearing engagement against the container C.
In the use of the device, the container is arranged upon the body bar 5, as seen in Fig. l, the inwardly extending terminal portion 9 of said bar being engaged with the glass wall of the container. The slide plate 12 is then forced inwardly to tightly engage its angular end 13 against the opposite side of the container. With the container thus held in position, the preserves or other hot material may be poured into the container and the container sealed in any ordinary or approved manner. I have found in the practical use of the device that by thus tightly holding and clamping the container upon the metal body bar, the walls of the container will not crack or break under the action of the heat. Thus by means of my device, considerable economy may be effected in the preserving of food stuffs.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use of my invention will be clearly and fully understood. two parts of very simple form, may be produced at small manufacturing cost and is also easily applied and operated in practical use. The device may of course be manufactured in various sizes for application to different varieties of containers. It is therefore to be understood that while I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, the device is nevertheless susceptible of many modifications in the form, proportion and arrangement of its several parts. Accordingly, I reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described including a body bar having an angularly off- The articles which consists of but set handle on one end, the other end of said bar having a portion bent at right angles to the plane of the bar and the terminal thereof bent at an obtuse angle to said angular portion for bearing engagement against one side of a glass container disposed upon the body bar, and means slidably mounted upon said handle for clamping engagement against the diametrically opposite side of the container.

A device of the character described including a body bar having an angularly offset handle on one end, the other end of said bar having a portion bent at right angles to the plane of the bar and the terminal thereof bent at an obtuse angle to said angular portion for hearing engagement against one side of a glass container disposed upon the body bar, said handle being provided with inturned guide flanges on its opposite edges, and a longitudinally shiftable plate mounted OTIS BENTON.
