' sides in the provision of a direction indicator which will be of simple and inexpensive construction and in which the directing arms or hands may be adjusted to the proper direction and secured against movement.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the above stated character including a post having means upon the same to indicate the different directions and hands adjustably mounted upon the post to properly direct travelers desiring to reach the different cities, towns and villages, the names of which may appear upon the fingers of the hands together with the distance to each place.
With the above and other objects in view as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the 'novel combination and arrangement of codperating elements more specifically set forth in the following paragraphs, pointed out in the appended claim and shown in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings formin a part of this application and in which like designating reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete device.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the post in section, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation, the rear side of the device.
Referring more in-detail to the drawings,
showing 1 designates the supporting post, which is preferably provided with the tapered lower end 2, in order that the post may be readily driven into the ground. A suitable head or knob 3 is also provided upon the upper extremity of said post 1. This post serves to support upon its upper portion, the four radially directed and equally spaced direction I Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed NovemberB'I, 1918. Serial No. 183,745.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
indicating arms 4 with the letters 5 positioned upon the same to indicate the four principal directions namely, north, south, east and west, as will be readily understood by referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings.
A pair of directing arms or hands 6 are hinged to opposite sldes of the post 1 by suitable hinges 7 and are connected by the adjustable links 8 pivoted to the rear sides of said hands 6, as shown at 9 and having the spaced apertures 10 to receive the securing screw 11 when the apertured portions of said rods are crossed. The hands 6 are adapted to be turned to parallel relation with the road or roads to the side of which the post 1 is positioned and each hand preferably has an extended forefinger 13. The
names of the cities ortowns to which the roads lead may be printed upon the face of the hands with the names opposite or directly upon the fingers and the number of miles at the ends of the fingers or upon the nails thereof. The last city or the one farthest away may be placed upon the uppermost or extended finger while the nearest city may be found upon or opposite the lowermost finger. This, however, is only offered as a suggestion as the names may be arranged in any manner desired.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that parties traveling along the roads where this invention is employed, may readily ascertain the direction to and distance from the different places and will also know the direction in which they are traveling.
While the form of the invention shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims without de arting from the spirit of the invention.
at is claimed as new is:
An indicator including a supporting post, indicating members hinged to opposite sides of said post and normally lying in horizontal alinement with one another and extending in diametrically opposite directions from said post, a link pivotally secured to one side face of each indicating member intermediate the ends thereof, said links having their free ends provided with a plurality of spaced openings extending longitudinally thereof, adapted to overlap in crossed relation so as to bring certain of the openings provided therein into ahnement to hold the in presence 0 two witnesses. lndlcatlng members at vamous'angular po- MAOE A; TUBBS. sition with respect to one another on said ,Witnesses: 5 supporting post, means lnsertible through 0.
