Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed. January 30, 1917. Serial No. 145,473.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. SIVLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trinity, in the county of Morgan and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cultivators, and it has particular reference to that class of cultivators in which tooth carrying arms are pivotally mounted on a central longitudinal beam, said arms being also provided with joints in the end of the hinges, means being provided for adjusting the arms pivotally and also hingedly in order that the machine may be adapted for use on ridges or in the beds or hollows between the ridges, as may be required.
The invention has for its object to sinr plify and improve the general construction of a cultivator of the kind or type above re ferred to.
A further object of the invention is to sim plify and improve the adjusting means whereby the tooth carrying arms are adjusted in various ways with respect to the central frame beam.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cultivator constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the same showing the tooth carrying arms adapted to 0perate on a ridge.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken 011 the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4= in Fig. l and showing the tooth carrying arms adapted to operate in a hollow between ridges.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are denoted by like characters of reference.
The centrally disposed longitudinal frame beam 15 is provided with an upwardly extending rack bar 16, said bar extending through a housing 17 having a sleeve 18 in which is located a springactuated dog or latch member that engages the rack bar 16 thereby supporting the housing 17 in position at various adjustments with respect to the rack bar. The housing 17 is provided with oppositely disposed cars 20.
Any desired number of tooth carrying arms may be used in connection with the central beam. In the accompanying drawings there has been shown two-such arms at each side of the beam, said arms being designated by A each of said arms being com posed of two members, viz., an inner member 21 and an outer member 22. The inner and outer members of each arm are hingedly connected together by a bolt or pivot member 23. The inner members of the arms at the two sides of the machine are pivotally connected with the beam 15 by bolts or pivot members 24, the said inner end members be ing overlapped beneath the beam as will be clearly seen in the drawings. The outer end members 22 of the arms at each side of the machine are serially connected by connect ing bars 25, the members 22 and the bars 25 being connected together by pivots 26. The connecting bars 25 at the two sides of the machine are connected with the ears 20 of the housing 17 by means of connecting rods 27. The beam 15 is provided with longitudinally disposed flanges 28, one at each side thereof, each of said flanges being provided with numerous apertures 29, each of said flanges being connected with one of the bars 25 by means of a rod 30 each of said rods being provided at one end with an eye 31 engaging one of the pivots 26 and each of said rods being provided at its other end with a hook 32 engaging one of the apertures 29, it being evident that by adjusting the hooks 32 in various apertures 29 the angular relation of the arms A with respect to the beam 15 may be varied, said arms being free to swing aboutthe axes of the pivot bolts 24 whereby they are connected with the beam.
For the purpose of effecting adjustment of the arms A or, properly speaking, of the outer end members 22 of said arms in the vertical planes wherein they are located, the
dog or latch member 19 is withdrawn from engagement with the teeth of the rack bar 16, thus enabling the housing 17 to be adjusted vertically with respect to the rack, and thereby causing the outer ends of the members 22 to be moved upwardly or down wardly, as the case may be. .When the desired adjustment has been effected the dog or latch member 19 is permitted to spring back in engagement with the rack bar 16, thereby retaining the parts in adjusted position.
The arms A of the device are to be equipped with teeth 33 which may be of any desired kind or construction. Said teeth may also be connected with the arms in any convenient well known manner. The beam 15 is to be provided at its forward end with means such as a clevis 34 for the attachment of the draft.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a cultivator, a beam having an upwardly extending member, a housing adjustable thereon, a pivot member extending vertically through the beam, tooth carrying arms mounted on said pivotmember, each of said arms being composed of hingedly connected inner and outer portions, the outer portions adapted for swinging movement in a substantially vertical plane, links connecting the outer portions of the tooth carrying arms with the housing, and means for limiting the swinging movement of the tooth carrying arms with respect to the vertical pivot member.
2. In a cultivator, a beam having an upwardly extending member, a housing adjustable. thereon, a pivot member extending vertically through the beam, tooth carrying arms mounted on said pivot member, each of said arms being composed of hingedly connected inner and outer portions, the outer portions adapted for swinging movement in a substantially vertical plane, links connecting the outer portions of the tooth carrying arms with the housing, apertured flanges at the sides of the beam, and links adjustably' connecting said flanges with the tooth carrying arms to l1m1t the swingmg movement thereof with respect to the vertlcal pivot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH W. SIVLEY.
