SUBPENDEBS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed March 30, 1817. Serial No. 158,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HOLIDAY a citizen of the United States, residing at Wekiwa, in the county of Lakeand State of Florida have invented a new and useful Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide novel means for limiting the movement of a spring which, constituting a part of a pair of suspenders, serves to hold up the trousers or other garments.
It is within the province of the disclosure, to improve generally and to enhance they utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and otherobjects in view which will appear as the descnption proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement Tof vparts and in the. details of construction hereinafter described a trousers.
and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the: invention herein disclosed can be made within the'scope of what is claimed, with- A out departing from the spirit of the ill-- loops 2 and to define, ineach stra' vention. p In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in erspective Suspenders constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken awa F 2 is a,perspective wherein a modified form of the invention ap ears;
Fig. 3, is'an elevation s owing a modified form of the invention, parts being broken y i Fig. 4 1s a perspective view delineating a' modified form of the invention;
Fig. 5- is an elevation illustrating a further modification; e i i Fig. 6 -is a front elevation showing a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 6;
'Fi 8 is a front elevation showing a modi fied o'rm of the invention; and a Fig. 9. is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig; 8.
In carrying out the present invention there is provi ed, as shown in Fig. 1, a pair of straps 1 bent upon themselves to 1form ,an inner layer 3 and an outer layer The layers 3 and 4 are extended downwardly a pair of through a cam buckle 5 including an eye 6. The outer layer 4 is fashioned into a long loop 7, and the inner layer 3 is fashioned into a short loop 8 lying within the long 100 f7. The ends of both loops are exten ed upwardly through the eye 6, and then downwardly the dependin ends 9 being stitched as shown at 10 to tie back side of the short loop 8. The construction is such, obviously, that the effective length of the depending forward ends of the straps 1 may be adjusted, without changing the difi'ervence in the lengths of the loops 8 and 7.
; Sugpended 1n the loop 8 is a holder 11 nclu m an eye 12 with which is connected retractlle spring 14. A slide 15 is pivoted a 16 to the lower end of the spring 14. A s spension element in the form of a cord 17 is mounted to move endwise through the slide 15 and carries loops 18 adapted to be ssembled with the buttons of a pair of When the spring 14 yields sufficiently, the slide 15 will come into contact with the bottom portion of-the long loop 7 and thus the elongation of the spring 14 Wlll be limited; Because the difl-erencein the lengths of the 100 s 7 and 8 remains constant when the hue le 5 is shifted, the amount which the spring 14 elongates before the slide 15 engages the bottom of the loop 7 remains constant also.
.Theloops 2 of the stra s 1 are stitched or otherwise secured as s own at 19 to a back loop 18. The numeral 20 indicates a spring the upper end of. which is connected at 21 to the u per end of the loop 18. The
lower end'of't e spring 20 is provided with a slide22 which is pivotally mounted on the lower'end of the sprin as shown at 23.
Through the slide 22 wor s a sus ension element in the form of a cord 28 aving eyes 24 at its lower ends. When the spring 20 yields sufliciently, the slide 22 comes 111130 contact with the bottom portion of the back loop 18, and the elongation of the spring 20 is limited.
In Fig. '2 a modified .form of the invention isshown. In said figure the numeral 24: denotes a loop, such as the loop 7 or th back loop 18. In this form-of the invention,
the suspension element or cord appears at 25 and has terminal eyes 26. One arm of the cord 25 may be provided with a branch 27 terminating in an eye 28. The eyes 26 engaged with a nether garment.
are adapted to be engaged with the sus pender buttons, and the eye 28 is adapted to be engaged with a nether garment.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings there is shown a shoulder strap 29. ()ne of these shoulder straps passes over each shoulder, and the shoulder straps meet in the back at a suitable point. With the shoulder straps, both at the front and at the back are assembled adjustable buckles 30. The buckle 30 has a hook 31 engaged in an eye 32 on a holder 33 having hooks 34. A loop 35 is threaded through the holder 33. Aretractile spring 36 is connected with the hooks 3-1. The lower end of the spring 36 is provided with a book 37 or other suitable element of any desired kind through which slides a cord 38 having eyes 39 at its ends. Assembled with the hook 37 or its equivalent is a ring 40 from which depends a flexible element ll mounted to slide in an opening 42 formed in the bottom of the loop The lower end of the flexible element 41 terminates in an eye 43 which carriesa spring clip 41 adapted to be The loop 35 in this form bf the invention serves as a limiting means, when the spring 20 is expanded.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, a modified form of the invention is shown. The con struction shown at 451% like that described in connection with Fig. 1, and the suspension elements 46 operate like the sus wnsion elements 17. In this form of the invention. however, the inner layer 47 and the outer layer 48 are se 'ialate pieces, the ipner layer 4.7 terminating as shown at 40, short of the low-er end of the outer layer 48. The outer layer 48 is extended toforni a loop 50, the end of which is stitched or otherwise held in place as shown at 51. A spring 52 is mounted in the loop 50 and carries at its lower end a slide or otherelementof a similar sort 53, the same being pivotailiy mounted. single cord 54 is connected with the parts 53 and passes downwardly through an opening 55 in the bottom of loop 30, the cord Ii-l terminating in an 1 we 56.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings. the numeral 70 denotes inner layers which are stitched or attached otherwise as indicated at 63, to outer layers (5:0, it being evident that the layers 70 and so may be stitch-ed together at any eemvenient point. The loop appears at 61 and is stitched or otherwise attached, as shown at 62., to the layers 60. The. flexible element appears at 64 provided with eyes 65, the spring ocmstruction preferably being. like who shown at 52 and 53 in Fig. 4.
In Fig.6 of who drawings there is shown a strap .00 bent upon itself to form a loo 101 having an adjntable end 102 carrying a button 103 adapted to be engaged in keyhole slots 104 formed in the body portion of the st rap. At 105 there appears a relractihspring carrying a button 106 which may also be engaged in any of the key-hole slots 104. The lower end of the spring 105 is provided with an eye 107 or the like, through which passes a flexible element 103* having loops 109 at its lower ends, it being; obvious that the loop 101 cons-1 itutes a means for limiting the extension of the spring 105. Proper adjustments may be made by shifting the button 103 in the key-hole slots 104, and by shifting the button 106 in the said key-hole slots.
In Figs. 8 and 0, a. modified form of the invention is shown. In the said figures, there appears a strap 110 bent upon itself to form a loop 111 the free end 112 of which is connected by a cam buckle-113, or otherwise, adjustably, with the strap 110. Mounted for adjustment on the strap 110 below the cam buckle 113 is a cam buckle 114 or similar device, connected with a spring 115 having; an eye 116 or other suitable means through which is threaded a flexible element 117, having loops 118 at its end. it is obvious that'by manipulating the cam buckles 114 and 115, the necessary adjustment can be obtained, as in the form shown in Figs. (3 and 7, saving for the fact that in Figs. (3 and. 7 a step by step adjustment is provided for, whereas in Figs. 8 and 9. a liner adjustment may be effected.
Having thus de:-'cribed the invention, what is claimed is 1. A, device of the class described compris ing a. loop disposed in a. single bight having an integral bend; a rrtractile spring supported at one end within the loop; a suspension element straddling the bend of the loop: and means at theother end of the spring for receiving the suspension element for longitudinal sliding movement, said means being adapted to engage with 1he bend of the loop to impose a positive limit upon the expansion of the spring.
2. A deviceconstructed inm'cordauce with claim 1. in combination with a second S115 pension element attached at one end to said means and passi 11;: at its other end slidably through the bend of the loop.
