Description

i To all whom it my concern UNITED STATES PATENT orn on.
' SAMUEL G. GOSS, or GLENCOE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR ro rnneoss PRINTING PRESS CQM-PANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINQIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PLATE- CLAMP.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
I Application filed November 29,1916. Serial No. 134,193.
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL G. Goss, a citizen of the United States, and 'a resident of Glencoe, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- 1ngs.
My invention relates to plate clamps of a i type adapted for securing curved printing plates upon a plate cylinder, and the principal object of my invention is the production of a new and improved form of clamp by which a system of marking shall be fprovided by reason of which theassembly o the several printed and folded products in proper rotation for the formation of a book may be expedited. To this end it is. the obJect of my invention to provide a plurality of plate clamp members any desired one of which members may be used in the appropriate location in the production of any given section of the book whereby in the completely assembled set of sections for the book the presence of a complete line of distinguishing marks indicatesa proper arrangement of the sections, while a break in the line of marks indicates an incorrect arrangement. It is. another object of my invention to improve devices of this type in sundry details hereinafterpointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomlished my several objects are illustrated in the drawings and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to be new and desire to covcr by this application is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a plate cylinder provided with one of my Improved clamps;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fi 3 is an enlarged detail, being substantially a section takenron line 3-3 of arran ed in proper order showing by the aline distinguishing marks that the sections have the proper arrangement; and
Fig. 10 is adiagrammatic view showing one of the clamp members in solid lines and illustrating in dotted lines-the relative positions which the other clamp members may be given for producin the distinguishing mark at the desired point circumferentially of the cylinder.
Referring to the several figures of the drawings, in which correspondlng parts are indicated by the same reference charac- '15 indicates a plate cylinder mounted upon a shaft 16. The cylinder 15 is provided at an appropriate point with a fixed clamping ring 17 extending circumferentially about the cylinder adapted to hold in position the inner end of a plate such as the plate 18. Plate clamps 19 slidably mounted in suitable grooves in the cylinder 15 serve to hold in position the outer'end of the plate 18 and the inner end of a plate 20, the outer end of which is held in position by a plurality of plate clamps 21 which are adjustably mounted relative to a head 22 which is'adapted to be adjusted as desired longitudinally of the cylinder for tightening the clamps21 against the plate 20 whereby the plates 20 and 18 are very firmly secured in position. Upon the opposite side of the cylinder circumferentiall 3, the connecting screw 27 is provided with I a lug 28 which extends type high above the face of theclamp whereby it is adapted to receive ink which during the impresion is deposited upon the web. The screw 27 is adapted to be turned by the use of a suitable wrench such as the wrench 29 illustrated in in the use of my improved system, a see tion of a complete book will be prmted with a set of clamps as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. A110 er ectiori will then be p ahead. 5...? veered f the tuted thereforysuch liea'd so bein g provlided with a lug 31 type high thereon at one side of the screw by which the head 30 aiid th'gf basea2r6 are connected. Another section head 32 being provided with a lug 33 which lso type highmi'Another qse ti r iywills b printed with, a :head 34 imposition {PIQYIQQQ with a": type-high lug- 35. Stillother sections are 1 printed with) the heads -30, 32 andfi l; in the-reverseiposition, as indicated; ini Fig l O, all ;Of; such changes being made.-;in; connection with the :clamp' shown i Fig. 53. Seven additional sfections each i with i-ts own dis; tinctiveanarkingmay, then-be printed in; appropriate order with the hQ&ds 30T3 Ii34= substituted successively for the heads of the other intermediateclamps 19lby which *ing a difierent section with' its appropriate marking. i
I It will be understood that if desired two the plate .18 is-held in position, the arrangement and construction illustrated being ca- .pable of producing twenty-eight,differentlymarked sections or products. It will be understood that if-desired -while the plates 18 and 20.:upon one, side of the cylinder are producing i-a given section with its appropriate'rmarking, the plates 23 upon the opposite' side of the cy inder may; be producof the clamps 19 might be provided with printing .lugs, in case two products should be produced by a single plate-Indeed, it will be appreciated thatmany changes may be introducedfrom the precise form and arrangement illustrated in the drawings without departing from the spirit of my inven- So far as 1am aware, I am the first inthe art'to provide rinting lugs uponthe intermediate plate 0 amps for giving the various sections distinctive marks as above described, and m claims are, therefore, to be construed accor ngly.
