a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bergencld, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Offset- Printing hiachines, @f which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to rotary printing machines and' particularly to that class thereof 'which-employs a plurality of design cylindens,\'and a cylinder to which the designs are transferred and from thence printed onthe sheet or web in coaction with an impression cylinder.
The object. of my improvements is to provide a machine of the class specified combining large length of sheet capacity with minimum height (and length of 4machine, and ample accessibility of design and transfer cylinders.
This invention presents a machine wherein the'thrust on the transfer cylinder exerted by the-desin'n cylinders is in a direction a'way from the impression cylinder, The thrust exerted on the transfer cylinder by the two design cylinders and the impression cylyinder, or any combination of these, is al ways in the same general direction, thus reducing to a minimum the variations in pres-l sure on the blanket of the transfer cylinder. It is highly desirahle, in this delicate method of printing, that the pressure on the yield'- ahle blanket of the transfer cylinder be as invariable as possible for the production of clear. sharp impressions. l

Printing machines of the class to which my improvements pertain are commonly known as offset printing machines, as the design or dcslgns carried by cylinders i and '5 are offset, in different colors or in one color, onto transfer cylinder 3 .and thence.

.llVhile this general method .of procedure is well "known in the art, all .machines for accomplishing this result which are known to me are Vprodigal of space, particularly in height, and the several cylinders are so arl ranged as to afford inadequate access to the surfaces of the design and transfer cylinders for cleaning, changing plates and so forth.
By my improved arrangement, these objections and difficulties have been overcome and I have produced a machine of greater capacity of 'product in .size and quantity, of greater economy in time of make rea-dy and productive of a finer quality of printing, than in any machine heretofore known to me.
Design' cylinders 4 and 5 are provided with the inking mechanisms of well known character,y indicated in a general Way by 6 and 7- respectively, and, if the machine is to be used for lithographie printing, dampening mechanisms 8 and 9 respectively may be employed.
Sheet feeding means, comprising feed -board lO and sheet stop 11, are disposed contiguous to impression cylinder-2, opposite transfer' cylinder 3. Said impression cylinder Q may he provided with the usual clips as 1Q for gripping the leading end 'of the sheet delivered thereto. Design cylinders 4c and 5 are disposed onaopposite -sides re spectively of and in printing relation with said transfer cylinder. A lso the common plane of the axes of cylinders 2 and 3 is preferably horizontal and the commonplane of the "axes of the design cylinders is substantially normal thereto.' By this arrange ment design cylinder fl is above transfer cylinder 3- and design cylinder v5 is below said transfer cylinder. Also' the common axial plane of design cylinders 4 and 5 intersects the common axial plane of impression and transfer cylinders 2 and 3 respectively, hetweenthe aXisof the transfer cylinder and the line of *contact of thatcylinde-r-,with the impression cylinder. By this arrangement maximuml accessibility to said transfer cylinder is afforded and from the same end of the machine (the .left hand end in the figure) large accessiblityto the deare sign cylinders is afforded. Also the inking and dampening mechanisms for botli the design cylinders are accessible f iomboth left'and-right hand ends of the macliine.
Take off means which may comprise sprockets 13 and 14, andl gripper chains as 15, are provided below said feed`board in operative relation to said impression cyl indei' 2. Said take off means are effective for taking` the printed sheet from impression cylinder 2 and delivering it/nrinted in .combination four. cylinders of equal diameters comprising an impression cylinder and a 'transfer cylinder in coacting relation, the' common axial plane 'of said impression and transfer cylinders being substantially horizontal, a bdesign cylinder above and a design cylinder below said transfer cylinder each on a lixed axis in'printi'ng relation with said transfer cylinder, the common axial plane of .said design cylinders being substantially normal to the common axial plane of the impressionA and transfer cylinders, means for inking` and means vfor dampening said design cylinders, sheet feeding means contiguous to said impression cylinder and opposite to said transfer cylinder,- and takev oilmeans below said sheetl feeding means in operative relation to'said impression cylinder. g
