vTo all whom it 'may ramera. Beit known tht I, kJHN4 a subject, of the Emperor of Austria, resident of l/Varren, county of Bristol, and
State of Rhode Island, have invented 'ceri Y tain vnew and usefulv Improvements iin Convertible Beds, Chairs, and 'Tables,'of which the followingis a "spec'ilication. i
This invention lrel-ates'to improvements in objecti'the provision of an article whichmay be used without modification by properly manipulating the-parts, either as a bed,a table or a chair. n j n c p This object is attained 'by the novel ldesign, construction and Vcombination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accom-y panying drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a top plan view of the article as extended in condition to be used asa bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same. A
Fig. 3 is aside viewof the same article when folded to be used as a table.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective view of the same when extended as abcd.
Fig. 5 is a perspective'view of the same as when usedras a chair.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the device when used as a table, one of the leaves being raised, and
a part of Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing one Y j Y as shown 1n Fig. 5, forming a back for the of the joint constructions.
The invention iscomprised of two pairs of similarly formed legs 10 connected to-y gether by a. bar 1l and having rigidly extending lateral arms l2 between which are secured slats 14, one pair of the arms 12 having downwardly extending projections 15 containing a transverse recess `or slot 16 adapted to act in the manner ofa socketreceptive of a corresponding projection 18 formed with the corresponding projection 19 from the other pair of arms.
Both ends of each pair of arms 12 have vertical slots 20 in which are engaged foldable leg elements 21 by means of the pins 22 passing through holes 22 at the end of the arms 12 in the manner of a hinge, a portion of the leg elements being of reduced thickness, as at 23, and adapted to engage with corresponding extensions from the oppositely hinged arm, both of the reduced portions being held when extended 1n the form of a bed as shown in Fig. 1 by means of pins .shown in Figs. 1 and Y ment 25 is held closely against the lower side 1 j Specification of Letters Patent. transversely through therednced'portion. orderto further strengthenfthe 'device l' when extendedk as Vto be used for -a bed,a`s
4, the removable eleof 'the elements 2l and 23 means of hooks n 27 so as lto-form rigid structure, other slats as 28 b'ei'ngdisp'osed from/one to the other.
These hook elements, which-are piyot'ed intheotrterfsi'de fof the 'projection 15 sothat the legs may be extended vertically, substantially parallel Vwith the legs Ojand the hook engaged with the pin 30, holding the same in a rigid position. Y
As shown in Fig. 5, the chair may be used by applying a cushion, the opposite member bein used for a like purpose.
W en it is desired to use the article as a table, as shown in Figs.' 3 and 6 the two 29 are also used to engage with pins 30"se't when itiisdesired to use the articleas -acha"iir" front legs 21 are placed closely adjacent; the
v.In this condition, the plate or cover elements 35 which are secured by hinges 36 to the upper part of the legs 10 are folded over,
forming in leffec-t a level and substantial tai ble top, as can best be seeny in Fig. 3.
When used as a chair, the top is extended chair, and also in an extended position, as shown inv Figs. 1, 2, and 4, when the article is usedasa bed, the plate 31 being held in a vertical position by means of the hooks 37.
From the foregoing, it' will be seen that a substantial structure has been described and l showncapable ofV being put into the several uses herein explained, and that the changes from one to another may be readily made without recourse kind whatever.v
tothe use of tools of any` Having thus described myinvention, what i Y I claim as new, and Vdesire to secure by Letters Patent,is Y
1. In a structure of the class described,
the combination with two pairs of outer,`
folded downward or extended horizontally at will, means for engaging said pairs of inner legs together when extended, means for supporting transverse slats combined with said arms and vinner legs, and a pair of cover plates hinged to the upper portion of said outer legs, said cover` plates being adapted to be positioned either vertically or horizontally.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination with two pairs of outer rigidly supported legs, arms extending laterally from said legs, means combined with said arms whereby they may be engaged together, two pairs of inner legs hingedly engaged with said arms, means for holding said inner legs extended'` horizontally or a folded vertically, and a pair of cover plates kadapted to beextended horizontally kor Vertically at will.
combination with two pairs of outer legs, a
Copies o! this patent may be obtained `for rigid brace between each pair, a pair of arms extending laterally from said legs, projections formed on the lower side of said arms, oneof said projections containing a recess, correspondinglugs formed on the other projections enterable in the mentioned recesses, inner legs hingedly secured in said arms, said inner legs being adapted to be engaged together, means orholding said inner legs in an extended horizontal position, means forholding said inner legs extended 'vertically, a plurality of slats removably engaged with said arms and legs when extended, a sectional cover hinged to the edges oi. ythe upper ends of said outer legs, means for holding said sectional covers in an erect position, and means for reinforcing said inner legs when in an extended position. l
In testimony whereof l have ailixed my l l signature this 24th day of February, 1917. 'Y 3. In a structure of the class described, the
