To all whom t may concern.'
Beit known that l, THOMAS HENRY ALEX- .innnn BROWN, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Power Station, municipality ot Trleidelberg, Transvaal Province of the Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Lamp-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide simple and eective means for locking an electric lamp bulb in its socket.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure I shows the invention applied to the ordinary bayonet slot socket; part-s being broken away.

Fig. IH is a similar' view to Fig. H but showing the lamp being released.
1 indicates the common lamp socket having an external screw thread 2 and bayonet slots 3,into which are engaged the radially extending pins 4 oi the lamp cap 5. On the socket are latches formed of arcuate flat springs 6 secured at one end 7 to the socket. Said springs are formed with holes 8 opposite the inner ends 9 of the bayonet slots, so that the pins 4, when passed into said ends 9 or' the slots, also pass into the holes 8 and are thereby locked in place.
The free ends 10 of the springs are directed anti-clockwise, i. e. against the incoming movement of the pins 4, and are curved outwardly as shown. rlfhe edges 11 oir' the springs extend somewhat below the lower end 12 ci' the socket. Thus upon pushing in the lamp cap until it is stopped by its pins 4 and then rotating it clockwise, as usual, the pins 4 travel around the lower end 1Q of the socket (first possibly traveling around the exposed lower edges 11 ot' the springs) until they pass under the free ends 10 of the springs and continue their movement into the bayonet slots 3, so raising the springs which afterward drop over them.
13 is a barrel rotatably mounted on the socket as by screwing it onto the threaded part 9. thereof. The lower end of the barrel is formed with an inward flange 14 which covers in the springs 7. Said flange is slotted diametrally at 15 to admit the lamp cap pins 4. The upper end 16 of the barrel may be beveled to carry the lamp shade 17. The preferred form ot' releasing key Yconsists of two arms 19 hinged together at 20 and of arcuate shape to fit around the barrel 13. A spring 21 tends to close said arms together; and grips 22 are provided by which the device may be held between the nger and thumb (as shown in Fig. H) and by pressing on which the arms may be opened against the pressure of the springs 2l. Each arm has an inwardly directed peg 23 of such length that when inserted thro-ugh the holes 18 it extends approximately to the surface ot' the socket. When the pegs are so inserted, (the barrel having it necessary been screwed away from the shade 17 or the lamp cap 5 to enable it to rotate freely) relative rotation is brought about between the lamp and socket on the one hand and the barrel and key on the other hand such that the lamp turns anti-clockwise with respect to the barrel. v
The tree ends of the springs are thereby brought up against the pegs (Fig. Hl) and are raised by them so releasing the lamp pins 4 and allo-wing the removal of the lampvby continuation oi' its relative movement. The holes 1S are so positioned relatively to the slots 15 that when the lamp is unlocked said slots 15 are opposite the open ends of the bayonet slots 3,-as seen in Fig. L-so that the lamp can be drawn straight away from the bayonet slots.
I claim- 1. The combination with a lamp socket of an automatically closing latch arranged to lock onto a pin on the lamp cap when the lamp is in position in the socket, and, ot' itself, lock the lamp in place.
2. The combination with a lamp socket of an automatically closing latch provided with an aperture into which a pin on the lamp cap is adapted to protrude when the vlamp is in position in the socket.
3. The combination with a lamp socket of a sprin latch provided with an aperture into which a pin on the lamp cap is adapted to automatically protrude when the lamp is in position in the socket.
4. The combination of a lamp socket provided with a slot, an automatic spring actuated locking member having an aperture registering with the slot in the socket, and a lamp cap having a pin adapted to travel. in
