HOPPER AN'D SPOUT CONSTRUCTION.
following is a specification.
The invention relates to apparatus for dis-' tributing concrete or other materialfrom a central point or station, and particularly to, the hopper and spout construction. The invention has for its primaryobjects the provision of an improved swinging spout construction, (1) which is maintained in proper registry with the hopper in all its positions of adjustment, (2) which does not require accurate fitting or machine work to prevent the leakage of the concrete or other material, (3) which will not become clogged up or get out of order, and. (4) ,which can be very cheaply constructed of ordinary commercial plates and angles. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my con- Struction, Fig. 2 is a bottom view and Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawings, A is the hopper to which the concrete or other material to be distributed is supplied; B is the spout for the hopper mounted for swinging movement so that its lower end follows the segment of a circle formed by the angle irons C; D is a .hanclle built up of angle irons and attached to the spout at its lower end for swinging such spout, the upper end thereof being guided along the angle iron segment E; and Gr, 1-1, I, K and L are re-. ceiving passages built of sheet metal plates and having their inlet ends terminating at the segment C so that the spout B may be 7 moved so that its lower end is in alinement with any one ofsuch receiving passages, the dot-and-dash lines M indicating the posi tion of the Spout when it is, in position to discharge to the passageway L. When the apparatus is used in connection with concrete the lower ends of the passages G, H, I, K and L are connected to troughs or pipes leading to the various points at which the concrete is to be used.
The hopper A is preferably constructed of sheet metal plates and has its lower end Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 12, 1918. Application filed July 15, 1916. Serial No. 109,579. i
terminating at the dotted line marked 1 in Figs. 1 and 2. The spout B is also constructed of sheet metal and comprises front and back walls 2 and 3 terminating L t the pivot rods 41- and 5, and side walls 6 and 7 (Fig. 2) extending up to the line 8 (Fig. 1) somewhat above the lowerend 1 of the hopper. These side plates carry pivot members 9 and 10 pivotally supported at the lower end of the hopper upon the transversely extending angle beams 11 to which the upper endsof the segmental angle irons C are attached, such pivot members also having their outer ends supported in the handle member D on one side of the spout and in an angle mem;
ber D on the other side of the spout (Fig; 2). otherwise secured at their lower bent-in ends (Fig. 2) to the end of the spout.
The foregoing arrangement leaves open spaces in the spout above the upper edgesof thefront and back plates 2 and 3, and in order to close these spaces and prevent a leakage of material between the hopper and the spout when the spout is in all of its various positions, the closure plates 12 and 13 are provided, such closure plates being pivotally connected at their lower edges to the rods at and 5 and carrying at their upper edges the rods 14 and 15. Each of the plates is held by three straps 16, as indicated in Fig. 2, such straps lying on both sides of the plates and extending around the two rods at their upper and lower ends. The rods 14 and 15 lie between and are guided by the inclined angle members 17 and 18, and the inclined walls of the hopper A; The spout is swung by means of the handle D, which handle is provided with a pin 19 adapted to engage the various holes 20 in the segment E, so that the spout may be held in its various positions of adjustment.
It will be seen that by the provision of the closure plates leakage is prevented re-' gardless of the position to which the spout is swung, and that this result is accomplished without the necessity of making any tight joints or accurately fitting the hopper and spout together. The device is constructed of ordinary commercial sections and plates, and there is no danger of clogging or of the parts getting out of order or collecting and holding material in such a way as to interfere with the swinging of the The members D and D are riveted or spout. Other advantages incident to the simpliclty of my construction and its cheap ness will be readilyapparent to those skilled in the art. I
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a tapering hopper having an open lower end, of a spout hinged at such lowerehdand receiving it,
closure plates hinged at their lower sides to the upper portions of the front and rear' walls of the spout, guide members upon the exterior of the hopper, and guide means carrled by the upper sides of said plates and cooperating with the guide members on he walls of the spout, guide members upon the exterior of the hopper at the sides of the closure plates, and guide members carried at the upper portions of the closure plates and projecting to the sides thereof to engage said guide members on the hopper, whereby the upper edges of said plates areguided to move up and down the exterior of the hopper as the spout 1s swung back and forth.
walls of the sp bars extending along the upper edges of the plates and projecting past the side edges thereof and secured o the plates, and guidescarried on the exterior hopper which the ends of said bars engage slidably whereby the upper edges of said plates are guided to move up and down the exterior of the hopper as the spout is swung backand forth.
4:. The combination with a tapering hopper having an open lower end, of a spout hinged at such lower end and receiving it, closure plates, transverse bars at therupper and lower edges of the plates, straps extending around the plates and bars for se curing the bars to the edges of the plates, means for hinging' the bars at the lower edges of the plates to the upper front and rear walls of the spout, and guides upon the exterior of the hopper with which the bars at the upper edges of the plates slidably engage.
