APPARATUS FOR CASTING TRAPS.

To all whom it 72mg concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. Sire-tron, of Camden Down, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Casting Traps, (which has been patented in Great Britain, dated October 2, 1879, and numbered 3,952,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved apparatus for molding traps for wator-closets and for other purposes, whereby a complete trap may be cast in one piece without seam orjoint.
The invention consists in a novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation, partly in sec tion, of a trap-molding apparatus embodying myimprovements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, showing the core and part of the frame in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail side and end views of the core. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken through the center of the core. Fig. 6 is a crosssectional view on the line to w, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is acrosssectional view on the line x a, Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a plan of the core, partly in section on the line 3 y, Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a section plan view of the same on the line 2 c, Fig. 5.
G designates legs or trestles, on which the T- shaped bed-plate or frame D rests.
E designates two blocks or carriages mounted to slide on the cross-arm of the T-shaped frame, and F a block or carriage mounted to slide on the angled arm of the T-frame. The three sliding blocks or carriages E E F can be brought toward the angle of the T-frame or withdrawn therefrom by means of handlelevers G, pivoted at their lower ends to brackets a, fixed at the end of each arm of the T- frame and connected with the blocks or carriages by links b and pivots c, as shown.
On each sliding block or carriage E is socured at half-section, H, of the outside mold, as by means of bolts d, the interior of said mold, formed by the two sections H, when brought together, having the form of the exterior of an ordinary D'trap.
A collar, J, is fixed to or formed integrally with the rear slidingblock or carriage, F, and L in said collar is held adjnstably, by means of the set-screwf, the hollow cylindrical end of the rear outside section, 6, of the mold. The section 6 serves to close what we may term the outflow end of the mold, and to it is attached or with it formed the lower section, 57, of the body of the core. The section g is made hollow, and init and a plumber block, t,fixed within the hollow section e,is mounted to turn the horizontal screw 71, on which a movable nntgi, works. To the not i is pivoted by ajoint, 7c, the rear end of a link, 7',thc forward end of which is pivoted by a pin, 2 to the swinging section in of the core, hinged to the end of section 9 by a pin, a. The screw 71. is turned by a crank-handle, 7a, secured to its rear end.
0 and p designate loose sections of the core resting upon the sides of section 9. The rear upper core-section, 0, is hinged to the rear mold-section,e,by ajoint, a, and is pressed upward into its proper position byaspring, s,secured to the plumber-block t.
For forming the inflow-pipe of the trap I employ a core-section, a, which I term the mandrel. The mandrel is arranged to move vertically in guide-apertures so, formed in the bed-plate I), and can be given such movement by means of a handlelever, K, pivoted at its rear end in a in w, to a bracket rojccting from the bottom of the frame D, and connected with the lower end of the mandrel by a. link, x, and pins :1 e, as shown. The handlelever K can be adjusted to hold the mandrel in anydesired position by means of a set screw, b, engaging a segmental bracket-arm, a, riding in a slot or keeper on the lever. On the top of the mandrel the small loose coresections e f are placed. Loose sections 0 cl rest on the core-sections o and 1), respectively, and on top of all is placed the loose section g. The hinged section 0 fills the space between the sections 0 and d and o and p, and thus completes the core, which is the exact shape and size of the interior of the D'trap. A Wedge-shaped opening, 2', is made in the'top of the mold by suitable recesses in the meeting mold-sections H H, and leads into the castingspace betwcen the mold and core. The mandrel u and the loose sections e,f c, and d interlock each other, as shown in Fig. 8; and to further prevent the various parts of the core from shifting upon one another dowel-pins or other suitable devices may ing section at by means of the screw it and ban dle h. The rear sliding block, F, is then withdrawn, carrying with it the mold-section c and core-sections g, m, and o, the'spring s yielding to allow the section 0 to issue from the trapoutlet. The mold-sections H H are then drawn back by means of the levers G G,when the casting can be lifted off the mandrel u. The loose core-sections g, e, f, c, d, 0, and p, which are left in the casting, can then be removed by hand, leaving the trap cntire,without seam or joint.
In some cases I may modify the described arrangements by dispensing with the screw it and spring action 8, in connection with the coresections m and 0, and dividing the sections of that part of the core into more sections, when the whole of the core, except the mandrel u, may be removed by hand from the casting. In some cases, also, I may withdraw the core-mandrel by hand directly where rapidily of action is not required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for molding traps, a sectional core consisting of two movable sections at approximately right angles to. each other, two hinged sections carried by one ofthe movable sections, and loose sections on the said movable sections, substantially as described.
2. The combinatiomwith the movable moldsection 6, carrying the core-section g, the movable core-section u, and the superposed coresections on the sections 9 and u, of the hinged section m, pivoted within the section 9, and means for operating said hinged section, substantially as described.v
3. The combination, with the frame of the apparatus, of blocks or carriages mounted to slide thereon, which blocks carry the mold sections, a core composed of detachable sections, one of which forms a mandrel arranged to enter the mold, an additional sliding block or carriage supporting another of the core-see tions, and means for moving the mold and core section carriages, substantially as specified.
4. The combiuatiomwith the movable moldsection 6, carrying the core-section g, the movable core-section u, and superposed core-sections on the sec'tionsg u, of the hinged section min the section 9, the screw it, nut i on the screw, and the link j, pivoted to the nut and to the hinged section, substantially as described.
5. The oombinatiomwith the frame D, of the carriage F, mounted to slide thereon, the cone section e,supported thereby, the additional detachable core-sections, the mandrel a, guided in the frame D, and devices for operating the carriage F and mandrel a, substantially as specified.
6. The combination,with the movable moldsection 6, of a sectional core, the section. 0 of which is hinged to the said mold-section and pressed upward against the adjacent sections by the spring 8, secured in the said mold-section, substantially as described.
