Description

I THOMAS J ALLISON,

IMPROVEMENT lN RIVETING DEVICES.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement inRivetin g Device, invented by THOMAS J. ALLISON, of Turnersburg, in the county of Iredell and State of North Carolina.
Figure l is a side view of my improved device, partly in section, through the line w m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for fastening copper rivets to beltin gs, harness-straps, &c., which shall vbe simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, leaving the rivet with asmooth round head; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a short cylinder, upon one side of which is formed, or to it is attached, a tang or handle, a, to which the hand-piece Bis attached.
The cylinder A is perforated longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 1, said hole being a little larger than the body of the rivet, for heading down which the device is to be used. The lower end of the cylinder A is concaved, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to give a slightly-convex form to the washer. O is a plunger, which is made of such a size as to work freely in the hole of the cylinder A. The lower end of the plunger 0 is concaved, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to give a convex form to the head of the rivet. Theplunger 0 should, for convenience, be made somewhat longer than the cylinder A, and should be connected with the handle a B by a strap, D, or equivalent fiexiblehconnection, so that the plunger mayalways be at hand ready for use.
In using the device, the rivet is putthrough the leather and the washer placed upon it. The head of the rivet is then placed upon some hard substance, and the lower end of the cylinder is placed upon the washer, the end of the rivet entering the hole in said cylinder. A blow upon the upper end of the cylinder A drives the washer down snugly upon the leather and draws the head of the rivet even and smooth. The plunger O is then inserted in the cylinder A, and a blow upon its upper end heads down the rivet evenly and smoothly.
Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination of the cylinder A, perforated longitudinally and provided with a handle, a. B, the plunger O, and flexible connection D, said cylinder and plunger being constructed and operating in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS J. ALLISON.
