PROCESS OF FORMING METALLIC ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Mar. 12, 19 18,
Application filed January 11, 1917. Serial No. 141,835.
the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to the art of forming articles by-die-casting, and it is the object of the invention to secure in addition to the advantages incident to the ordinary diecasting process the further advantage of greater strength and resistance in the finished product. To this end the invention consists in the novel process, and further in the product as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure l is an elevation of a nut formed by my process; 7
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectionthrough.the die, showing the reinforcement'therein prior to the casting-process;
Fig. 4: is a section through the castyreinforced nut as removed fr m the die;-
ing operation.
While my process is applicable to various manufactured devices, I have 5 confined hexagonal the description to the specific process of forming die-cast nuts.
A is a metallic washer of steel or other material, possessing the requisite strength for the threads of the nut. .This washer is non-circular in contour, bein preferably of poly onal form correspon ing .to the shape of the nut. In forming my nut a washer A is placed within the die in engagement with a suitable vmandrel B, and the sections G and C of the die are then closed around the same. This will center the washer within the mold cavity, so that when the molten metal is filled therein the washer will be embedded, as illustrated'in Fig. 41 The threading of the nut is then accomplished by any suitable apparatus, resulting in the structure shown'in Fig. 5.
What I claim as my invention isi 1. The process of forming nuts, comprisingthe die-casting of a hollow soft metal cap upon 'a hard metalwasher and, then the threading of the innerwall of said washer.
2. The process of forming nuts, consisting indie-casting ahollow soft metal covering about a hard'metal washer, the inner faces Of the covering and washer being in alinement,-and in threading both inner faces.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
F -WALTIER GUIBERT. v
