To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD ARMSTRONG MAsoN and HEDLEY VIcARs HAYES, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of St. John, in the Province of New Brunswick and Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Display and Dispensing Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to dispensmg cabinets, and more particularly to a cabinet adapted to display goods to be vended.
An object of the present invention is to provide a cabinet with an annular space to retain a relatively small quantity of goods in position over a relatively large surface area to provide a relatively large display, and to so hold the displayed goods that they will not be decreased in quantity by withdrawal of the main bulk of the goods in the cabinet.
The invention further aims at the provision of a sanitary cabinet which Wlll house and protect from dust, in such, and handling by the customers, goods to be vended, and
also the goods placed on display.
A further object is to provide a cabinet comprising relatively few parts peculiarly and detachably interfitted and admitting of the easy separation of the parts for cleaning and ventilating the interior of the cabinet; to provide a cabinet which will seal the goods of delicate flavor from absorbing foreignfiavors from surrounding goods; which issimple and economical in construction and manufacture, and comprises relatively few parts which may be readily removed and; re placed when broken; to provide a cabinet having a base portion of such form that the latter may be assembled in a closely spaced apart row of cabinets of similar construction; and to provide a cabinet with a bin in the lower portion thereof into which the goods to bevended are fed by gravity, and to provide means-in the bin for providing a space into which may be returned excess quantities of goods withdrawn from the bin.
The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined display and dispensing cabinet constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken substantially centrally through the same.
Fig. 3 isv a horizontal section taken on a plane indicated by the line 3+3 in Fig. 1,
and looking downwardly toward the base of the cabinet.
Referring to this drawing, 10 designates a base which may be inthe form of a casting, and which is hollow. The base 10 is provided with downwardly flaring front and side walls, and is provided about its lower open end with an outstanding attaching flange 11 provided with suitable apertures 12 adapted toreceive fastening devices for holding the base 10. to a counter, a shelf or the like. The base 10 is provided with a fiat top and with a relatively large circular opening formed centrally of the top.
Within the base 10 is fitted a bin 13, the latter being in the form of a substantially rectangular receptacle substantially filling the base 10 and, provided at its rear side with a relatively broad projecting mouth 14 formed by a continuation of the bottom of the bin. 13 and inclining the continuation thereof upwardly into a plane which is horizontal. and which islocated below the top of the bin. The mouth 14 is provided with a hinged closure or cover 15 which rests upon the upper edges of the mouth 14, and which is pivoted at its outer edge portion to the mouth 14 by the hinge 16. The opening of,
the mouth 14 is continued upwardly in the rear wall of the bin 13, as shown to ad'vanrage in Fig. 2, and the cover 15 is provided with an upstanding flange 17 whichengages across the rear wall of the bin 13 and closes the opening therethrough. A 'finger loop 18 is secured'tothe cover 15 in the angled portion thereof between the body of the cover 15 and theupstanding flange 17. The finger loop 18 is arranged preferably intermediate the lateral edges of the cover 15 fingers for raising and swinging the cover 15 about it's hinge 1-6 and into open position. for the introduction of a tube or the like. into-the mouth-portion.

and in position. to be readily graspedlby the I The bin 13 is of a height which extends from the plane of the'attaching flange 11 upwardly into a horizontal plane spaced slightly below the horizontal plane of the top of the base 10. The mouth 14: of the bin 13 projects rearwardly through a relatively large opening or slot formed in the rear wall of the base 10.
The top 19 of the bin 13 is provided with a circular opening of less diameter than the opening in the top of the base 10 which is adapted to be arranged concentric thereto when the bin 13 is located in the base. An opaque cylinder or container 20, preferably of metal, is open at opposite ends and is adapted to seat at its lower end upon the top 19 of the bin at the inner marginal edge portion thereof, the interior diameter of the container 20 being substantially equal to the diameter of the opening through the top 19.
The top 19 is provided on its under side, and
about the openings therethrough, with a depending feeding flange 21 which has at its upper edge portion an outturned attaching portion adapted to be riveted, screwed or otherwise secured to the top 19 and against the underside thereof. The, feeding flange 21 is of any desired length and is adapted to direct the contents of the receptacle 20 into a substantially pyramidal pile and prevents the spilling of the mouth 14. When a quan tity of the contents have been removed from the bin 13 through the mouth 14:, the flange 21 directs a corresponding quantity of the goods from the container 20 into the bin, and .should it be desired to return an excess quantity of the goods removed, it is only necessary to replace the same in the forward end of the mouth 14: and above the pyramidal pile of the goods.
A transparent cylinder or casing 28 of greater diameter than the container 20 projects downwardly through the opening in the top of the base 10 and is seated upon the upper wall 19 of the bin 13. A plurality of spacers 24:, in the form of angle irons, are riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the exterior surface of the container 20 and pro ject radially therefrom a distance equal to the width of the annular space formed between the cylinders 20 and 23. The spacers 24 hold the cylinders in substantially true concentric relation. The outer transparent cylinder 23 is held'to the base 10 by the pro vision of a clamping strap 25, the major por tion of which extends downwardly through the opening in the base 10 and is provided thereat with an outstanding substantially annular retaining flange 26 adapted to engage against the underside of the top of the base 10 and hold the strap 25 from upward movement through the opening in the base. The strap 25 is curved substantially circular, and is provided on its closely spaced-apart ends with outturned ears 27 arranged above the top of the base 10 and which are con nected together by a clamping bolt 28 adapted to be tightened for contractingthe strap about the outer cylinder 23 for detachably holding the latter to the base 10 and upon the top of the bin 13.
The spacers 24k are preferably arranged upon the upper and lower portions of the container 20 to space the top and bottom thereof equi-distantly from all sides of the outer transparent shelf or casing 23. The
inner and outer cylinders 20 and 23 are substantially of equal height, and a cover 29is g titted over the upper open ends of the cylincabinets may be arranged in a row in closely spaced-apart relation with the flanges 11 thereof overlapping at the adjacent sides of the cabinet and secured together by a conimon fastening device.
The parts of the cabinets maybe separated without removing'the base 10 from the counter or shelf by merely loosening the strap 25 and lifting the cylinders 20 and 23 from the bin 13. The bin 13 may now be slid rearwardly through the opening in the rear wall of the base 10, and the parts may thus be readily cleansed and ventilated.
In use, when the parts are in position as shown in the drawing, a relatively small quantity of the goods may be placed in the annular compartment between the cylinders 20 and 23, and the compartments may be filled to the top with the goods so as to display a relatively large quantity or surface area of the goods. The main hull: of
the goods is placed in the inner cylinder 20,
and is not exposed to view. The goods are dispensed from the inner opaque cylinder 20, and the removal of the main bulk of the goods does not disturb the quantity of the goods arranged in the display compartments or annular space.
It is of course understood that various. changes may be made in the construction and design of the above specifically described parts of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
We claim r 1. In a combined display and dispensing cabinet, the combination of a base, a cylinder rising from the base and adapted to receive a quantity of goods, a bin arranged in the base communicating with the lower end of said cylinder and adapted to receive the goods therefrom, and an outer transparent cylinder rising from the base about said first cylinder and providing therebetween an annular space adapted to receive a relatively small quantity of the goods to display the same at all sides of the cabinet.
2. In a cabinet, the combination of a hollow base, a-bin detachably fitting in the base and provided with a mouth portion extending rearwardly therethrough, a pair of concentric cylinders rising from the base and providing therebetween an annular display compartment, the top of said bin comprising a closurefor the lower end of said compartment, said bin having an opening in its top wall communicating with the inner compartment, feeding means arranged about the openings in the bin for distributing goods from the inner compartment into the bin, and means carried by the base for holding the cylinders in position.
3. In a cabinet, the combination of a hollow base provided with an opening in its top, a bin detachably arranged within the base and having a smaller opening in its top, a pair of concentric cylinders arranged in spaced relation upon the top of the bin with the inner cylinder communicating with the opening in the bin and the space between the cylinders closed by the top of the bin, and clamping means carried by the base for engagement with the outer cylinder to hold the same to the base.
4. In a cabinet, the combination of a hollow base, a bin detachably mounted in the base and provided with a mouth portion extending through the rear side of the base, a hinged closure for closing said mouth of the bin, a pair of concentric cylinders bearing at their lower ends upon the upper wall of the bin and providing an annular passage therebetween closed at its lower end by the wall of the bin, spacers arranged between the cylinders for maintaining the same in arranged between the cylinders, a clamping element carried by the base and engaging the outer cylinder to hold the cylinders in position, and a feeding flange depending from the top of the bin into the latter and about the marginal edge of the opening through the bin. v
6. In a cabinet, the combination of arhollow base, a bin detachably mounted in the base and adapted to slide into and out of position through the rear wall of the base,
said bin having an upwardly opening mouth projecting from the'rear side thereof and through the rear wall of the base, a hinged cover mounted on the mouth of the bin adapted to normally close the mouth, a feeding fiangedepending from the top of the bin and the latter having an opening within the flange through the top of the bin, a pair of concentric cylinders mounted on the top of the bin and projecting upwardly through thebase, the topwall of the bin forming a closure for the lower end of the annular compartment between the cylinders, spacers arranged between the cylinders, a clamping element carried by the base engaging the outer cylinder to hold the latter in position, and a cover detachably mounted upon the upper ends of the cylinder to close theannular compartment and to closethe inner 7 cylinder.
