NVENTOR ATTORNEY titlt UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM NELSON PIERCE, 01E MOUNT VERNON, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-HAN GER.
l..il58,452.
Application filed May 29, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VJILLIAM N. Pinncn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Jefferson and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-l langers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible garment hangers.
Objects of the invention are, to provide a folding hanger wherein the parts are more securely retained in the erected position, to provide a more compact arrangement of parts in the collapsed position, to simplify and render more ellicient the structure of the hanger, and to decrease the cost of production.
With these purposes in view and others which will hereinafter become evident, 1 have embodied my invention in the form described in the specification below, delineated in the drawings, and possessing the novel features set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings,
F igure 1 is a front view of a hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view showing the hanger partially collapsed.
Fig. 3 shows the hanger in the collapsed position.
Fig. at is a fragmentary view of the hanger-joint and associated parts.
lleferring to the drawings more specifically, the hanger is designated in entirety by the numeral 1, and comprises arms 2 and 3 of proper configuration for supporting a coat or other garment and having the ends overlapping and reduced in thickness where adjacent for alined disposition. Each arm is formed with a shoulder i adjoining the reduced portion 5 adapted to coincide with the inner face of the other arm to limit the outward movement of the arms to the erected position. A suitable hinge 6 is attached to the inner faces of the arms in juxtaposition to the reduced portions 5 to permit folding movement. To maintain the arms in the erected position, a link 7 is pro- Speeification of Letters Patent.

vided, having pivotal connection with one arm 3 toward the hinge 6, and having slidable connection with the other arm 2 to permit collapsing the hanger when desired. In the present instance such connections comprise bent terminal portions 8 of the link, whereof one portion 8 is inserted in a bore 9 formed transversely of the arm 3 and the other portion 8 is inserted in a longitudinal slot 10 formed transversely of the other arm 2, the portions 8 having projecting extremities 11 properly bent after insertion, or are otherwise adapted for retention in the bore and slot respectively.
In the present invention the hook 12 for suspending the hanger has the additional function of retaining the link 7 in the operative position. To effect this the link is formed intermediately of the ends with an eye 13 engaged by an eye l t formed terminally of the hook-shank 15, and the adjoining reduced portions 5 of the arms are formed outwardly of the hinges 6 with a flat surface 16 adapted to be engaged by a laterally bent portion 17 of the shank 15. The flat surface is rounded away on one side to permit the portion 17 of the shank to ride up thereon and secure the link 7, and to prevent displacement of portion 17 and assist in sustaining the weight of the hanger and garments thereon a catch 17 is provided for engagement with the shank-portion 17 in the operative position.
For further support of garments, as for instance a pair of trousers, and to assist in maintaining the hanger arm in the erected position, link members 18 may be pivotally attached to the extremities of the arms, and connected by a hinge 19 of the widely used type known as a buggy-bow joint, whereby downward movement of the arms beyond a predetermined position is prevented.
While I have here shown and described a preferred form of my invention for purposes of illustration, such embodiment is not to be interpreted as in any way limiting the scope of the invention, it being obvious that many and varied embodiments may be constructed without departing from the spirit thereof.
2 emme I claim and engage both arms above their pivotal A garment hanger, comprising arms pivconnections when the parts are in extended otally connected and formed for interlockrelation, the hook extending above the arms 10 ing fit at the pivoted ends, a link pivotally and forming a means for supporting the 5 connected to one arm and having slidable hanger from a fixture.
connection With the other, and a hook loosely In testimony whereof I affix my signatnre. connected to the link and formed to overlie WILLIAM NELSON PIERCE.
