Be it known that I, JEFFREY T. FERRES, a citizenof the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of 'Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Mechanism for Paper-Board, of which the following is a specification.
My present application is a division of an application for patent upon which Patent proveniente in machines for making corrugated paper-board, has been issued to me, and the invention herein described 'and claimed relates particularly to mechanism,
for cutting paper board .suoli as corrugated paper board, as it is delivered from the cor'- rugated board machine, said mechanism aoting to cut the board in lengths of predetermined length. The object of my invention .is to provide a,V simple and efficient mechanism of this character Which shall be capable of cutting the paper board as itis continuouslyr being delivered by the machine and Without requiring any stoppagek or intermittent movement of the machine.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear or delivery end of a corrugated board machine showing my cutting mechanism attached thereto; Fig. 2 a detailview of the driving connections for the cutting mechanism; Fig. 3 a perspective of the cutting roll, and Fig. 4 a detail vievv of certain of the driving connections.
It will be understood that the corrugated board machine is continuous in its operation and that consequently the corrugated board is produced continuously thereon. In Fig. 1 I haveshown the rear or delivery end of a corrugated board machine which has pro-l or chilled cast iron, is adjustable verticallyin suitable manner as by means of the adjusting screws 4 cooperating-- with the journal boxes 5 of'the roll, these boxesbeing -movable in vertical slots 6 in the end frame 1. The lowermost line of this vroll 2 is in more radially. disposed knives 7 extending the length of the roll'and projecting therefrom a distance to cut through the board product in coperation with the under surface of the roll 2. The cutting mechanism is operated automatically by and in unison with the corrugated board machine. As herein shown the shaft'8 of the cutting roll carries a vsprocket AWheel 9 over Which extends a sprocket chain 10 which also passes over an idler sprocket Wheel (not shown). The chain is provided With detachable links, all of the links being ordinarily plain 'links excepting those provided With lugs 11. These lugs are adapted.

Each lug 11 is therefore adapted to engage the disk 13 so asto move it in clock'- Wise direction A(Fig. 2), thereby rotating the cutting roll 3 a half turn or fullturn if tWo lugs are used near together. rlhe sprocket Wheel 9 is driven by the gear 14C secured thereto by bolts 15 and driven in suitable manner as by means of the idler gear 16 driven by the gear 17 secured to shaft 18.
The drive is therefore from shaft 18 through gears 17 and 16 to the sprocket `Wheel 9, it being understood that this sprocket Wheel and the gear 14 are mounted loosely ,uponY the shaft 8 While the disk 13 is secured thereto. Following the drive as far as the cutting roll, the same is through the sprocket Wheel 9, chain 10, lugs 11, disk 13 and shaft 8. Where only one knife is used in the cutting roll additional lugs are used on the chain 10 to give it one complete turn. In order to prevent any possibility of overthrow of the cutting roll, I key to its shaft a brake drum 19 and provide a corresponding brake band 20 to which is fastened a Weight 21. This brake band is connected at one end to said Weight and at 4the other @11d t0 a xed point 2,2 ou the end frame..
Suitable driving mechanism may loe ein-- ployed for the roll 2 and in the present instance such mechanism comprises a gear secured to the drive shaft 24,.-pinion 25 journaled in the end framed and agear 26 secured to the shaft 27 of the roll 2.
