Abstract

1440926 Cutting apparatus A SCHMERMUND 16 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 50095/72 Heading B4B A device for cutting continuous webs into lengths comprises two web feed paths each having a portion common to the other, respective cutting means 2, 3 and 102, 103 associated with each feed path, respective web feed means 1 and 101 selectively operable to feed a web past the respective cutter means in co-ordintaion with the displacement of a displaceable knife element 3 thereof and web change-over means selectably actuatable to render inoperative substantially the feed means and cutter means associated with one feed path and to render operative substantially simultaneously the feed means and cutter means associated with the respective other feed path. Considering one feed path only, the cutter element 3 is mounted in a rotatable drum having gear teeth in mesh with a gear wheel 15 mounted on a sleeve 18, 19 sliadable on a drive shaft 25. After the web is severed, the cut portion is carried away via a suction-type conveyer band 5, feed rollers 8 suction roller 9, 11 and feed rollers 12. The drive from the shaft 25 is transmitted to the gear wheel 15 by means of member 20, 120 secured to the shaft and having clutch dogs for engagement with dogs in the sleeve 18, 19. As shown in Fig. 1, the gear 15 is drivingly connected to the shaft for rotating the cutting element 3 while a gear 115 meshing with teeth 116 on the cutting element 103 is disconnected from the driving sleeve 120. When the left-hand web is nearly used up the gears are moved on the shaft 25 by means of a rod 24 such that the gear 11 is disengaged from the drive sleeve 20 and the gear 151 is engaged with the drive sleeve 120; movement of the rod 24 also actuates a switch 21 such that, simultaneously, the drive for the feed means for the left-hand web is disconnected while the feed means for the righthand web is started. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), in order to allow a gap to form between the leading and trailing ends of the cut portions of the web, suction conveyers (9), (109) corresponding with suction conveyers 5,105 of Fig. 1 are arranged to run at a higher linear speed than that of the feed rollers 1, 101 thereby causing a gap to form after the web has been cut. In a further modification, the meshing gears 15, 16 and 115, 116 may be adapted to actuate reciprocable cutters instead of rotary as shown.
