To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn W. Brsnor,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Salts-Lake City, Salt Lake county, and State inafter described and particularly of Utah, have invented and discovered cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Cable- Terminals, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to terminal pieces vfor cables and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereset forth in the accompanying claims.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a cable terminal which will be securely held to the cable strands without the aid of set-screws or. other like devices that readily work loose in service; and wherein the tention,
sile strength of -the cable is in no manner lessened by employing the terminal piece.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a terminal piece for cables used as conductors for electrical purposes, in which perfect contact is made between the cable and the terminal piece, and between the terminal piece and the point of attachment.
.Another purpose of the invention is' to construct a cableterminal piece employing but few parts, that may bereadily fitted to,
or removed from, the cable, and in which the union between the cable strandsand the terminal piece will be augmented inv direct Y proportion to the strain to which the cable F ig. 6 a similar modification,

Referrin to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, A designates the cable, of any general construction, and
composed of twisted strands after the wellis adapted to be fitted into and secured the tubular member 10 of the terminal piece,
and which is formed with an integral web portion 11, giving the necessary contact surface at the point of attachment.
The means for securing the cable in the terminal piece 10 consists of a tubular core or plug 12, of substantially the length of theterminal piece and having a tapered 01' wedge edge 13 for penetrating between the strands of the cable from the inner or open end 14 of the tube memberlO; and said core for the application of a suitable'tool or member used in driving the wedge into the end of the cable, as will be understood. When thus inserted into the cable end, said tubular core receives or embraces the central strands of the cable and radially expands all strands exterior thereof, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The outer end 16 on the terminal member 10 is formedwith a constriction, and
. that portion of the cable end, together with the bushing 8, within the member 10, is adapted to be radially expanded or spread through the wedging action of said core 12 (see Fig. 3) and it will therefore be' seen that said constriction serves as a etc or abutment, to. prevent the withdrawa of the cable from the terminal member 10. It will be further noted that any strain on the cable A would operate only to cause a greater wedging or clamping action between plece and this in a'measure directly proportional to the degree of force thus exerted.
The construction of terminal piece disclosed in Fig. 5 is substantially the same as that above described and operates after the same manner. The core 17 is, however, in this instance, provided with an open inner end 18, as in certain uses of the device, this construction of core piece may be preferred. This form of the device also omits the use of the bushing or sleeve 8, and thereby the strands of the cable, are spread directly against the interior surface of the tubular part 10 of the teminal piece.
The terminal piece, as disclosed in Fig. 6 employs a wedge or core 19, having a solid and threaded portion 20 that screws into the threaded aperture 21 in the body 22 of the terminal member; and a nutshead 23 is formed on the core to receive a wrench or other tool for adjusting the core to the desired position. In all other respects the details of the terminal piece shown in Fig. 6 are the same, and operate in the same manner, as that of the terminal piece shown in Fig. 5.
The invention further contemplates constructing the device in different designs in cross-section for certain special uses, and this adaptation is shown, for instance, in Fig. 7 where the tubular member 24 of the piece is shaped substantially after the manner of a triangle, and, in like manner, the core member 25 is similarly designed in cross-section.
In the form shown in Fig. 8, the tubular member 26 is octagonal in cross-section, and the core member 27 is substantially square.
These illustrations (2'. 6. Figs. 7 and 8) are sufficient to show that the device is susceptible of being constructed in various crosssectional designs, as conditions might determine; and other forms in cross-section may also be made.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
Having thus fully described'm said invention, what I claim as new an desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cable terminal piece comprising a terminal member of uniform cross section having a constricted opening at one end and adapted to receive the end of the cable, and a member for radially expanding the cable strands uniformly against said terminal member to the inner side of said constricted opening, substantially as set forth.
2. A cable terminal piece comprising a terminal member of uniform cross section having a constricted opening at one end and adapted to receive the end of the cable, and a core of uniform cross section for penetratin the cable end to radially expand the ca le strands uniformly against said terminal member to the inner side of said constricted opening, substantially as set forth.
3. A cable terminal piece comprising an open-ended tubular terminal member of uniform cross section having one end thereof constricted, and adapted to receive the end portion of the cable; and a tubular wedging core adapted to penetrate between the strands of the cable from the inner end of the tubular member and radially expand the cable strands uniformly against said terminal member for the entire portion of said tubular member to one side of said constriction, substantially as set forth.
4. A cable terminal piece comprising an open-ended tubular terminal member of uniform cross section having one end thereof constricted, and adapted to receive the end of the cable; and a tubular core co-extensive in length withv said terminal member and formed with a tapered end adapted to penetrate between the strands of the cable from the inner end of the tubular member and radially expand the cable strands uniformly against said terminal member for the entire portion of said tubular member to one side of said constriction, substantially as set forth.
5. A cable terminal piece comprising an expansible bushing adapted to be fitted on the end portion of the cable, a tubular terminal memberhaving a constricted end and adapted to receive said bushing and the cable; and a tubular wedging core adapted to penetrate between the strands of the cable and radially expand the cable strands and said bushing against said terminal member for substantially the entire length of said tubular member to one side of said constriction, substantially as set forth.
