Description

c. H HEIDER. LUMBER STAMPING DEVICE.-
APPLICAHON FILED APR. 30. I911.
Patented Mar. 5, 1918.
CHARLES? HE RYHEIDER, or silent/Iona, uismm, v 1 v To all whom it may concern Be it knownhthat II, 'CHARLE 1-1.1 HnrnnR, a citizen of the United States,residing .at
Glenmora, in theparish otR-apides and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Lumber-Stamping Device, of which the following is aspecilicat-ion.
The present invention 'appertains generally to printing and: stamping devices, and relates more particularly-to an appliance for stamping or imprinting characters in lumber, or the like.
The object of theinvention is to provide a novel and improved device for stamping lumber for purpose of 1dent1ficat1on,- record, advert1sement,tor the like, and such-data as the name and address, date, graders numher,- planing machine number, trade mark,
advertisement, etc., can be imprinted or stamped 1n the lumber as itccmes from the lan'in machine thus renderin the device automatic operation,'and thelumber in being marked or stamped Will. servefas an identification in case of dispute or lost shipment. V
The present device-is designed'for attach ment toaplaning-machine, or-the like, to operate automatically for: printing or stamping the' desired characters'in the lumber. as
it leaves the planing machine, the-device be 111g1lco'mparativel i s mple and lnexpenslve 1n construction, readily applied and practical *andefiective in operation. r I Xnoth'er object jof the invention is to provide a device 'ofthat character of such constructionthat the dies will not clog or choke up With gum, pitch, rosin brother accumulations, as When stamping pine or similar lumber, thus avoiding the blurring ofi the characters which would result if the dies be:
came clogged.-
A-still further object of'the invention is to construct a machine o'f the nature-indica ed which is adjustable for various thick-v nesses of lumber, and Which-is adjustable to either stamp the upper or the lower surface of thedu'mber, and which canalsobe positioned to stamp either edge of the lumber as-itcomes'it'rom the planing inachin'e;
Nith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the 'inve'ntlon resides in the combinatlon-and arrangement of parts and 111 the details fof' construction hereinafter described "and claimed, 'being understood that changes in the precise embodiment "of v Specification of Letters fatent. . f In carryinglout the invention, there .is provided a suitable bracket 1, which asillustrated einbodiesfthe supporting or attach-L ing plate 2,-a shelf or plate 3 .at right angles with the plate 2, andbrac. flanges or ribs lbetn een said plates 2 andq3'. The plate-2 1's elongated and is prQYi'dedJneanits enjds Withielongated slots a for the reception of clamping bolts "5-to-clamp the plate-.2 against the rear end of. the bed;6 of a plan- 3', sai' d[clamp being. provided with a clamp? 1115:. machine, or the like, so. that the lumber vwill pass over or across the fshelf ,or-plate 3. ,T he plateh3 l as{a slot .7 betweentwoof "theflanges 4, a'nd'the bracket has clampB united with another flange 4r. and-the plate); I 7
tical position as illustrated. The-spindle 1 0 extends above and below theclamp 8,.and
can be readily-set to the desired position by, loosening the bolt 9. Thebracket-lflthus carries the spindle '10], which spindle in turn CZHIlGSxthG stamping or operating partiof. I
the invention;
8-and bracket 1', and isprovid'ed With .a
v split clamping sleeve. 11 embraces the V spindle lO'beloW the split clamp' 8, and has 'aclamping bolt12 forcontracting it tightly upon the spindle tohold the sleeve 11 in any, adjusted position. A split sleeve13is slidable upon the spindle 10 aboveTthe clamp be contracted -to take up ear, and alsov to;
7 1101 clamping-bolt l l whereby said sleeve gm 7 4 i tightly embrace the spindle 10, when desition. The upper-"sleeve 13 has a feather 15 to work within a longitudinal featherway 16 with which the spindle is provided, whereby to prevent-the rotation of the sleeve 13, but to permit the'sleeve toreciprocate or slide longitudinally of the 7 spindle.- The sleeves 11 and13 each have a pintle 1'7 extending to one side therefrom thezsaln'e directionfrom the sp ndle l0,-and a bolt 18 or; other retaining element is engageable upon the free end of the pintle ,17 These 7 pintlesare adaptedrfor the removable and interchangeable engagement therewith of a pressure roller Or wheel '19 and a stamping the. wheels 19 and 20 are applied to the re l or printingwheel 20.' As shown in Fig. 1,
spective sleeves ll and 13, whileas shown inFig. 2," the wheels are reversed, it being evident that the wheels can be readily applied interchangeably with the pintles 17 of said sleeves, to rotate-thereon;
The rin12l of the wheel 20 isprovided with an annular slot 22 dividing said rim into two annular'side sections which are spaced apart, and the two sections of the rim 'are provided at theirinner faces and adjacentto their outer edges, with confront ing or complementary undercut grooves 23 'ointl orovidin a dovetailed or undercut slot in the periphery of the wheel 20'. This dovetailed slot is adapted to hold'any suit able number of dies 2% which are dovetailed.
to fit the grooves 23. The dies may have any suitable letters, nuinerals'or characters, 7
' and can be used interchangeably to, provide the desired wording ormark, according'to the'circurnstances, the faces of the dies projeeting from the peripher'y of the wheel '20 to press into the lumber. It will'be noted in this connection that the riin of the Wheel 20 works within the'slot 7 betweenthe resp'ec tive flanges 4', and that the dies project beyond 14 the plane of the face of the plate 3 when the wheel 20 is applied to the sleeve 11 with said sleeve properly. adjusted with respect to the bracket 1. At each end ofthe set or sea ries of dies 24:, there is a step block. or blank die 25, which serves topreventthe end dies from entering too deepinto the'luniber, as; the end dies engage spect v'ely.
and leave the lumber, re-
Importance is attached to the fact that each die2at is provided with an opening or hole a 26 extending from its face to itsbase and communicatlng with the slot 22, whereby gum, pitch, rosin, sawdust or other aceu1nulations' which enter the characters of the dies will be forcedby pressure against the lumber into and'through the openings or holes 26, thereby preventing the characters of the dies from being cloggedv or choked, as would result inthe blurring of the marks on the lumber.-- The accumulationswvhich V,

By changing the position of the bracket 1 to bring the spindle l0'horizontal, the de-' vice can be used for stampingor imprinting the mark in eitheredgeot the, lumber, it belng noted that both the stamping and pressure wheels can be, adjusted relatively for various thicknesses and widths of lumber;
Thus, by separating said wheels, lumber of greater thickness or'greater width can be accommodated. V A
The dies are made from the bestgrade of lumber as pine, containing gum, pitch, turpentine, rosin or the like; 7
