Letters PatentlN-o. 95,344, (lated Septembre/"28, 1869.
IMPROVED METHOD 0F lilIAlii'UIE'l-LCTURIN'Gr- TYPE-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all lwhom 'it may conce/rn:`
' Beit known that I, B. B. HILL, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts,
have invented a new and useful Improvement 'in the Manufacture of Type-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the 'accompanying drawings, andthe letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent,
Figure 1, aside elevation of my machine for forming the characters or figures upon a blank typewheel;
Figure`2, an end elevation ofthe same;
Figure'S, a vertical longitudinal section, through line E vI? of fig. 2;'.
Figure 4, a side view of a' type-wheel, with the characters formed thereon by my process; and in Figui-e 5,`a vertical section of the same, through line IK offig. 4.
My invention relates to the processof fonmingthe printing-characters upon the printing-face of typewheels used in hand-stamps, and consists in conin'- ing the blank upon which the characters are to be made, firmly and securely between two clamps or plates, leaving a small portion around the p'eriphery of the blank exposed to the action or operation of a die, having engraved or sunken figures or characters thereon, which die may be applied to the periphery. of the blank, in a rotary manner, and both the die and the blanksmaybe 'made to revolve together, and under sufiicient pressure, to cause the particles of metal'near the rim to be forced or pressedv more densely together, except such portions as enter the sunken characters, upon the die, to form the characters upon the periphery of the blank, while the main central portion of the blank being securely confined, is prevented from becoming enlarged in a direction parallel with its axis, or from changing its form or size.
That others skilled in the art may be able to practise my invention, I will proceed to describe the method I use for practising the same.
In the drawings- A" represents two uprights or standards, in which' operate two spindles,'B and B', and upon the' end of one spindle is au annular projectioma, having a shoulder at t', and upon-the outer end, c, is made a screw-thread, upon which turns the `threaded nut f.-
` plates.
nut f and the blank, leaving the rim of the blank projecting alittle beyond the projection a and plate e.
The nut f vmay be cylindrical, and the washer e dispensed with if desirable.
A cylindrical die, d, sufficiently hard, may be placed upon the other spindle B, and secured lin place Vin the same manner as the 'blank is secured, said die having engraved or sunken characters thereon, and-if one or bot-h of the spindles are tlien made to revolve, while the die and blank are forced or pressed together, the
periphery of the die will force back the metal at and near the periphery of the blank, except those portions which enter the sunken characters upon the periphery of the die, which portiqns will retain their original position, so that when the pressing or rolling is iinished, the characters willjbe found projecting from thefaceor .peripherylofthe blank,...
Sometimes it may be desirable to use type-wheels which are solid, and have no hole therein. In such cases it is only necessary to place the blank against a plate, placing it in a right position by means of a gauge, and bring another plate up against the other side of 'the blank firmly, so that the blank may be securely coniined between and revolve with the two It will'be seen that by thus confining or clamping the blank, but a very small portion'of the metal of which it is composed is operatedupon by the die, as all the main or central portion which is confined securely between the plates or clamps, cannot be acted upon, nor any of its particles displaced .bythe force ofthe die operating upon the surface of the blank, and the small amount of metal which is being operatedv upon at any one time', admits of the use of very light machinery in rolling the blanks.-
It is evident that the die may be of any desirable form, either cylindrical and operating in a rotary manner, or it may be straight, and' be made to'perform a rectilinear reciprocating movement, as most desirable and convenient.
The small portion of metal near the periphery of the blank, which has been displaced, and which projects beyond the plane o'f its side, may then be removed by brin ging up a cutting-tool against it, while the blankis still clamped in the machine and rotating, or lit may be removed byA placing 'it ina lathe, and then removing vit by means of any of the common cutting-tools used for similarpurposcs, orin any other desirable and convenient way, andthe type-wheel is then ready for-use.
I am aware that blanks have heretofore been placed in dies, and then the whole blank expanded, either by heavy blows upon the flat side fof theblank, or by driving an arbor, or' spindle 'through a hole inthe fining the metal to be operated upon, as herein de scribed; and having, therefore, described my invention What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improvement in the method of forming, by compression, the letters or figures ou the periphery of type-whee1s, and to avoid thickening or displace-` ment of the metal during such compression, except along` the angles which separate the circumferential surface from the lateral surfaces, tightly compressing said Wheel between two circular plates or disks, which completely cover and compress the two lateral surfaces of said wheel, excepting onlya narrow rim or margin thereof, allowed for lateral extension undrr the action of the die, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, av type-wheel., having characters or guresformed or produced upon its periphery by the process substantially as herein described. f V
